The Wiwi Jury — our in-house team of music unprofessionals — is reviewing and rating the 37 competing songs in Eurovision 2024. Next we review San Marino, who have chosen MEGARA with “11:11”.

Are we rocking along with the band? Read on to find out!

MEGARA – “11:11” (San Marino Eurovision 2024)

Review: MEGARA – “11:11”

Tom: I love rock and pop-rock so this should be right up my street … but I can’t quite put my finger on why it’s not. It’s fun, yet it’s a bit of a mess. I hope that on stage it comes alive because I think the recorded version of the song is a tad over produced, hence the messiness. At this moment, I feel it will need a huge performance for it to qualify for Saturday.

Score: 5

Lucy: How fun is “11:11”? MEGARA manage to make San Marino one of the most thrilling songs to watch this year, with such a burst of energy given throughout the entire performance. It doesn’t matter that I have no idea what they’re saying. The entire three minutes is just packed with excitement, and it never gets stale. The verses even offer something different from each other (the delivery of “Me La Pela” at the beginning of the second is glorious). It may be the third year in a row we get rock from the smallest country in Eurovision, but this is their most effective effort in those attempts. Just please change those dancers’ costumes in Malmö…!

Score: 8

Sebastian: This is really unfortunate. MEGARA has a really strong identity and capitalises on a punk rock genre that is still quite popular globally. Being sung in Spanish also makes the song a tad more alluring. But unfortunately, that’s where the compliments end. This is dated. While the genre could have been brought into 2024 by the super professional band, instead, it sounds like a track well and truly buried in a mid-2000s Paramore album. The addition of flamenco is cute but doesn’t quite fit the song. Good try.

Score: 2

Ruxandra: They certainly know how to bring the party! It seems that MEGARA aimed to blend their rock style with pop influences to make their song more Eurovision-friendly, though they could go more rock. Whether with live instruments or not, it’s crucial to ensure that the instrumental doesn’t overpower the vocals. Their contagious energy and charisma are undeniable, but there’s room for improvement in organising their staging to avoid appearing too confusing or chaotic. Highlighting each member individually is essential, and even more interaction among them during the performance could enhance their stage presence further.

Score: 6

Only 4.97? Shame on you! It should be at least 6.0. So underrated!

To me this is the strongest San Marino has been since Adrenalina. Which… let’s be real, is not a high hurdle to clear at all, but deserves to be said anyway. I quite enjoy this song’s studio cut! It’s a bit messy here and there, that’s true, but I feel like that is a part of Megara’s identity. I’m not really keen on their styling and it puts me off a bit, but the music definitely compromises that for me. Sadly however, the live performances of 11:11 we’ve seen thus far leave quite a few things to be desired, making… Read more »

This one’s a lot of fun. Literally a riot. I don’t think I need to review “11:11” because it stands apart from the rest on its own two feet this year. Sadly, this song has a very unmemorable melody, so it is going to have to rely on fun staging to get some votes.

While “Arcadia” was better in my opinion I have this one in my top 10 and was the best possible choice for San Marino. People tend to dislike this kind of rock but her vocals are superb and the song itself keeps moving and never really stops delivering. The “flamenco” bridge, well, it seems you either love it or hate it and I’m loving it. I think Megara have all the possible ingredients to qualify in May: vocals, stage presence, looks, dynamic song well fitted for added elements for the live performance. I hardly see this going unnoticed by the… Read more »

SAN MARINO – Rating the UVpSM semis is like cracking Nemo’s code with all the ones and zeroes. Luckily for them, Megara offered much more than that! They are a charismatic band with a sense of putting on a show. I really enjoyed their Arcadia last year.  While the same energy is present in 11:11, I feel like there’s a certain lack of an instant hook. Or perhaps it’s the loud instrumental which can feel similarly intense throughout. It only somewhat slows down near the end to make space for a Flamenco-inspired bridge.  I like the energetic approach of this… Read more »

People are being too harsh based on the nf staging. They will probably change that…

Someone should really do that. Have we ever actually heard any Sanmarinese give their opinion or vote at Eurovision?

I agree. San Marino doesn’t use the televote because they don’t have their own phone network, but I see no reason why UVpSM shouldn’t use app voting locked with Sanmarinese ID cards.

EBU have a minimum number to make a public vote valid (1000?) and maybe San Marino would struggle to reach it.

31st place – San Marino This song is okay for me, I can listen to it but it doesn’t amaze me or make me wanna listen to it non-stop. The chorus is catchy and it sounds kind of like the music in Argentinian telenovelas (personal opinion). When they were chosen and I watched the live performance, it felt underwhelming and the vocals weren’t that good either. However if they do better staging and improve the vocals, then it will become much better. Qualification I have no idea what to say. There will be people who like it and those who… Read more »

always try and route for san marino, they send some absolute bangers and imo a lot of them should’ve been in the grand final (achille lauro especially!!!) but megara doesn’t hit it with me at all, in my bottom 3 of the year i’m afraid

This is one of the only entrances that have a secured 12 in the semi-final from another country. I think that it is a mistake to consider than they won’t qualify.

6) San Marino – I hate flinging the ‘u’ word around, but it genuinely saddens me how low this one is ranked. I love me a good “don’t care” song! I’ve danced around to this one a bunch (I really shouldn’t because one of my legs is wrecked, but that’s beyond the point lol), and I really enjoy the humour and the flamenco guitar during the bridge. I’m very happy to see Megara at Eurovision after their performance in Benidorm Fest last year. 8.5/10

25TH PLACE: SAN MARINO: Foreign, pop-rock-oriented artists representing San Marino are always a mood! Not gonna lie, I would have preferred Loredana to represent San Marino this year though. 11:11 is energetic, kinda catchy and with a cool rock performance it could progress but there are many parts of the song that put me off. Instrumentally it also doesn’t do anything to me: I personally find too much noise to be present. The song certainly has a specific personality, but that’s not enough for me to enjoy it.

Sanremo had the option of selecting Loredana and they rejected it. In my opinion the selection of San Marino was correct. ESC needs more representation of rock bands

In Sanremo she was by no means the best. In San Marino I haven’t listened the songs apart from hers and Megara’s so I can’t judge the entire competition but she was definitely better than Megara in my opinion.
I agree about the much needed rock band representation at ESC since I am primarily a rock fan outside of the contest. Nevertheless, in my opinion songs like “Like an animal” or “11:11” aren’t my style of rock songs.

21. San Marino – Megara – 11:11 – 6.5/10 – a rock song in which strangely I don’t feel the energy and passion that I normally do. It is solid and punchy and sounds different from the pack, but it is sadly not as inspiring as it needs to be for a rock track. Still, it is a welcome slice of diversity for the contest.

Probably my guilty pleasure of the year. I shouldn’t like this but i love the humour in the music video and the music is quite enjoyable. Live performance needs work tho. 6.5/10 19th place
