At Junior Eurovision 2014, it was obvious that some of the contestants have better voices than their adult counterparts at Eurovision. Over the last month, we asked y’all to choose who you thought was the best live vocalist at the competition. Sophia Patsalides brought sound vocals to a dance number and Krisia Todorova soared in all registers. But our readers ultimately decided to award the 2014 Gaia Cauchi Award for Best Vocals to Malta’s opera diva Federica Falzon!
Here is how our team described Federica during her first rehearsal at JESC:
Who’s the brightest star in the sky? Federica Falzon. Today during her first rehearsal, Malta’s youngest opera star really brought it. Her vocals were pitch perfect — no surprises there — and she was as camera-aware and telegenic as ever. The Maltese team have dreamed up the perfect LED backing for Federica. It features images of diamonds dangling in the air, and as the song builds they explode into bejewelled fabulosity. There is something really indescribable about hearing Federica sing live. She will never need Auto-Tune. Just give the girl a microphone and let the magic unfold!
Gaia Cauchi Award for Best Vocals at JESC
A total of 1,241 votes were cast. Here is how the top three finished.
1. Federica Falzon — Malta: 340 votes, 27%
2. Krisia, Hasan, and Ibrahim — Bulgaria: 216 votes, 17%
3. Sophia Patsalides — Cyprus: 140 votes, 11%
The Gaia Cauchi Award honors Malta’s 2013 representative. That year contestants did anything and everything to grab our attention (and our votes). From silly costumes to human bicycles, the efforts were really strong. But innocent Gaia simply stood on stage, sang her song with her powerhouse vocals, and smashed the competition. She proved that the most important ingredient remains the voice.
This award is just one of a dozen that make up the 2014 Wiwi Junior Awards. Our 12 categories—from best dressed to most wronged at JESC—identify the contestants who left the biggest impression on Junior Eurovision fans, regardless of whether they won the contest or not.
She deserves it. Malta was in my Top 3 with Italy and Armenia.
FEDERICA DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE AN OPERA SINGER!!!!!!!
Beccaboo , your hatred towards federica will only make her stronger than she already is!! She is one in a million with an impeccable voice. Get over your jealousy cause she is not going anywhere!!
Well done to our diamond <3 and even our last year star gaia cauchi., im proud to be maltese <3
There was no competition here. Federica deserved this award hands down.
Ukraine! 😀
Dear beccaboo, can you tell me what is fair for you? your hate and jealousy can only make kids like Federica, get stronger. Hope your hate campaign is now coming to an end cause you have been trying to destroy this girl even before we heard her song for the very first time. I suggest you keep following this little diva so you will keep going with your hate. Well done.
Federica won fair and square. How is that unfair?
Federica has a good voice I must admit. However, THIS IS TOTALLY UNFAIR!
