Ace Wilder doesn’t do dumb. Her Melfest banger “Busy Doin’ Nothing'” was actually a clever statement on how young people approach work, and advocated working to live rather than living to work. Not everyone picked up on that: They were too busy tapping their toes to one of the hottest tracks of 2014. Miss Wilder’s follow-up “Riot” kept the good thing going, bringing together hand-clapping, stomping, blaring trumpets, and another club-worthy chorus.
Ace — born Alice Kristina Ingrid Gernandt — has raised her game yet again with “Stupid”. The new single dropped on June 4 and three days later I’m still living it. It thumps and beats and builds below, while Ace’s vocals keep it airy, light and playful up top. The end result is music that’s fun and yet somehow emancipatory.
Lyrically the song tells a tale of far-flung travel and the freedom that comes with dislocation. The opening seconds serve South Asian realness — from the zither to the accented male — giving the impression that Ace & Co are on the last night of a holiday in Goa, where they’ve just chewed mescaline. “Dumb and drunk and high, it’s the best night of our lives, and tomorrow we’ll ask why…”
It’s not an advertisement for LSD, but a reminder that rules breed conformity and harboring regrets stop you from moving forward. “We’re free to be what we wanna be and smart we never was,” she says. “Let the ones who got away stay behind.” But the best lyric has to be her prayer for men willing to go down. #justsayin. Ultimately “let’s get stupid” becomes a battle cry for living your life rather than the one others prescribe for you.
