Today the Wiwi Jury – our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — travelled to Canberra to tuck into some Vegemite on toast. After our mouths were left as salty as Cory Bernardi after the marriage equality vote, we decided to sit down over a cold glass of Pub Squash and review the entry for Australia at Junior Eurovision 2017, “Speak Up” by Isabella Clarke. Do we want to join Isabella and speak up for what we believe in? Read on to find out…

Australia’s Junior Eurovision 2017 song

“Speak Up” reviews – Isabella Clarke

Antony: Isabella and her song — with its infectious and modern beat — is truly a breath of fresh air this year. The song is anthemic with a positive attitude and will be inspiring for kids around the world with its impactful message. I am proud having this song represent my country.

Score: 10/10

Chris: It’s so refreshing to hear a “positivity” song at Junior Eurovision, that also sounds like something a junior artist would want to sing. “Speak Up” doesn’t reinvent the wheel too much, but it’s infectiously joyous and Isabella really does a great job with it. Extra points for the obligatory key change, too.

Score: 8/10

Josh: Three claps for my homegirl! Guys, this is by far Australia’s best effort at Junior Eurovision in their three-year history. It’s a well produced and infectious bop with age-appropriate lyrical content to match. Yaasss Isabella, you should go out there and speak the truth regardless of your youth. Isabella is setting the standard for young female role models. This. Is. Amazing.

Score: 10/10

Robyn: This is so good. “Speak Up” is exactly the sort of song that should be at Junior Eurovision. It has a fresh modern sound with a message aimed especially at younger listeners. Isabella has a great voice, she delivers live and she can move. This could do really well in Tbilisi!

Score: 10/10

Sebastian: She doesn’t just ‘speak up’ – she sings it from the rooftop, honey! Isabella brings real attitude and freshness to the theme of youth empowerment. It’s all tied together with some fantabulous choreography which hopefully Isabella can mirror onstage. The hook is such an earworm – I’m getting flashbacks to Destiny Chukunyere and I’m loving it. A golden talent and a real contender for the win.

Score: 10/10

William: Isabella Clarke looks like a young Kylie Minogue and oozes a similar likability and effervescence. The on-trend production melds dollhouse with tropical house, gifting us something that’s at once sweet and light yet strong. The bridge, which is filled with a key change and plenty of vocal gymnastics, could give this that “moment” so essential to Eurovision winners.

Score: 9/10

Extremelly overrated. Australia shouldn’t end in the top 5, but it will… as always.
