Sanja Ilic & Balkanika will represent Serbia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 with the song “Nova deca (New Children), after the group won tonight’s Beovizija 2018.
The group received the twelve points from both the jury and the televote.
The runner-up Saska Jankovic and her song “Pesma za tebe” received ten points from both the jury and the viewers. Dusan Svilar and his entry “Pod krosnjom bagrema” ended up in third place, with seven points from the jury and eight from the audience.
About Sanja Ilic & Balkanika
Sanja Ilic & Balkanika emerged as one of the favourites for the win as soon as the participants were announced. In the 20 years of their existence, the group has become well-known for their eclectic style. They combine traditional Balkan music with modern beats, performing all over the world.
Many of this year’s Beovizija entries seemed to be in that modern-ethnic style. But Ilic and Balkanika stood out. It was obvious that the genre is their home ground and they are true masters of it.
The frontman of Balkanika, composer and multi-instrumentalist Aleksandar “Sanja” Ilic, was invited to the stage to accept the trophy. In his speech, he thanked his team:
“I would like to invite everyone from my group and our whole team to come to the scene..to thank all those members of our group – which, as you know, has twelve members – that, due to Eurovision rules, cannot be on stage with us. I want to thank my wife, who composed the song with me.”
Beovizija 2018 — Voting
The winner of Beovizija 2018 was determined by a combination of votes awarded by a jury panel and by the televote. The score system was the same used at Eurovision, with both the jury and the viewers giving two sets of ten points, 1–8, 10 and 12 points.
Jury vote
The jury pannel, comprising of acclaimed musicians Vojkan Borisavljevic, Dusan Alagic, Dejan Petrovic, Zeljko Vasic and Ivana Peters – who wrote Serbia’s 2016 entry “Goodbye (Shelter)” – were the first to award their points. They gave their top ten points to:
- “Nova deca” – 12 points
- “Pesma za tebe” – 10 points
- “Ni sunca ni meseca” – 8 points
- “Pod krosnjom bagrema” – 7 points
- “Samo nek se okrece” – 6 points
- “Svatovi” – 5 points
- “Vila” – 4 points
- “Nema te” – 3 points
- “Ruza sudbine” – 2 points
- “Zato” – 1 points
Public vote
“Nova deca” won the televote convincingly, receiveng almost three times more votes – more than 14,000 – than the runner-up Saska Jankovic, who received about 5,000 votes. The audience gave their top ten points to:
- “Nova deca” – 12 points
- “Pesma za tebe” – 10 points
- “Pod krosnjom bagrema” – 8 points
- “Svatovi” – 7 points
- “Samo nek se okrece” – 6 points
- “Vila” – 5 points
- “Ruza sudbine” – 4 points
- “Zemlja cuda” – 3 points
- “Ni sunca ni meseca” – 2 points
- “Nema te” – 1 point
All the profit from the public votes will go to the RTS national campaign Cancer is Curable, which raises money for prevention of the decease and care of the cancer patients.

I love they turned back to Serbian. I missed it!
About the song,I love the instrumentation and the beginning is so beautiful. It reminds me of the good old days of Serbia. However, the performance was underwhelming. They need to come up with a better presentation, because there is potential.
Good luck to Serbia!
Sanja Dolezal is back
The best song won ???
Now this is what I called nostalgia – I feel like a little girl watching Xena: Warrior Princess again 😀 Which isn’t a bad thing – Xena had amazing soundtrack.
Great pick – I have no idea how it’ll do at Eurovision, but I’ll certainly listen to it often. Sadly I can’t vote for it in the semifinal.
Why not? 😮
Think about it for 5 seconds.
I though the same. This sounds like the soundtrack of Xena! Though Xena’s soundtrack was Bulgarian if I remember it well.
Xena soundtrack is Bulgarian
Actually soundtrack to Xena was done by american composer Joseph LoDuca. But yeah – the theme song was developer from Bulgarian folk song, but I wasn’t talking only about theme song.
I love the fact that Serbia (same as Montenegro) sing in their national language and come back to the roots somehow, but the song is horrible. I’m sorry 🙁
So grateful for the twitter users around the world for making this monstrosity of a NF enjoyable.
Good for Serbia. But I doubt it will do that well .It does nothing. Not bad but not good either. Very dated.
I hope Serbia sends something different next time and not the kind of entry you expect them to send.
This one might be a grower, but I was really excited when Serbia and Montenegro both said they’d sing in their native languages, and both songs have been really disappointing
So here’s my debate question:
In 2018, are Eurovision entries rejecting globalisation and instead embracing ultra-nationalism?
Answers on a postcard.
I can’t seem to find a YT video of the live performance of Serbia yet, but i’m sure it will pop up eventually. From the studio recording, it sounds quite good for what it is.
We are just celebrate diversity 😛
Here’s link for you, enjoy 🙂

Thanks. That performance is really good. 🙂
@Purple Mask
What is your definition of ultra-nationalism?
The same as currently in Wikipedia: Ultranationalism is defined as “extreme nationalism that promotes the interest of one state or people above all others,” or simply “extreme devotion to one’s own nation.”
Are you saying that countries that are using their language at Eurovision to compete are ultra-nationalist nations just because their artist will not perform in English ?
No. It’s more than just a language choice. It’s about how people are choosing to represent their country through their music. Let’s start with Greece. I’m hearing the term “ethnic music” being applied to Greece’s entry, for example. This to me implies a music promoting a race-based culture. Call it “racism” or “ultra-nationalism” or just “diversity”, fine, but there is the principal of the discussion. Also, Denmark is sending a song seemingly about its Viking roots. (Albeit rather loosely). And the UK sent a song sung by the only solo white singer in the competition – that could be seen… Read more »
I think removing ethnic individuation from Eurovision would be like removing cheese from Mac and cheese…it just wouldn’t stick. Coming together isn’t about uniformity, it’s about embracing all differences. I feel this is more a discussion about globalisation but maybe I misunderstood your comment.
Wtf?
The songs REPRESENT the country they’re coming from. Are you not familiar with the definition of that word?
Why should Serbia, or any other country, represent English language or someone else’s tradition? It’s not division, it’s brining different cultures together.
Yeah, both good points (Gerry and Sarah).
I’m leaning towards inventing a new “world language” with an aim to forming a “world culture”. It can contain as many existing elements as possible or it can be something totally new – it will be the ultimate creative project whatever happens. 🙂
As for the Eurovision Song Contest, I wonder what would happen if for just one contest there were no countries – only songs. My imagination though.
for your information: Sanja Ili? is a male, his real name is Aleksandar, Sanja is a nickname… He is a leader of the group and author of the song… A man on keyboard
It’s a nice song, even though not my cup of tea. I would have liked it more if they wouldn’t sing on playback :/
There was no playback!!! Listen to her voice carefully!
If you pay attention to the said ‘live’ performance, Danica’s scarf gets caught in her mic, and pulls the mic far away from her mouth, but for some reason she keeps singing. That’s clearly playback!
They all sang live, but in the video posted they used the studio version instead.
I WAS LIVE IN THE ARENA AND THEY SLAYED LIVE ,DONT SPREAD LIES…YOU LIAR…
I’m not spreading lies, I’m saying what I saw on the video. If you have an argument about that, it would be welcomed, but don’t rush in giving wrong judgements.
Lourdes is correct, even Maja Nikolic and others accuse Balkanika of using playback while all the others had to sing live.
RTS obviously fixed it for them to win.
And Danica’s microphone did fall towards the end of the song and was nowhere near her mouth, but her voice was coming through strongly. This is one of several things which proves it was playback for Balkanika.
Meanwhile, the others you could hear differences in their voices as compared to the studio version.
I think that mic part was suspicious, but the video of the live performance definitely does not have the audio of the studio version. There is a possibility that Danica may have not been singing live but the other 2 definitely seem to. Even the suspicious part that “nana neh” thing, it fades out a LOT more in the studio than the live performance, so if it is playback they didn’t use the studio version.
the song is boring but it could do well with some health problems, that old dude with the beard should claim that his blood pressure drops when he goes on stage
One of them can have a sweater with SOS Refugees, and fake a seizure in the green room.
Hahaha the shade!!
Yes…why only Portugal should use such tactics!!
Honestly , dont like Serbia this year, years ago ,i find interesting to send balkan balads and etnics songs, but now is sooooo boooring, i know, is nearly a obligation in Eurovision to love this music, but i hate obligations,
Apparently they sang on playback. Danica’s scarf stays on the mic halfway through the song and stays there until the end. There is no way she could sing with the mic covered. You can see her pulling the scarf at the end. Shame for other singers who actually sang live
Good observation. I did not watch so I don’t know if the others sang live, but I’m very surprised that they’re allowed to use playback in Beovizija.
Shameful, indeed.
Such a nonsense! First of all you should watch the entire live performance once again – there is no scarf on Danica’s mic at any moment. Second, I don’t know where you’re from and where did you watch it, how the sound was, but it was obvious that every single song was sung live, of course there was no playback. Only ‘interval’ acts were on playback.
I watched the entire live performance – the microphone was completely gone at some point and never returned back to her face.
Where exactly???
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5eC-HSEYPs
At 2:46
Where do you see the mic on the brown-haired singer after that?
Oh, I watched so many times and I didn’t see that. You’re right. I’m confused now…
Oh, that’s why she sounded a little different from that moment. I was wondering what has happened to her voice.. especially at the very end. Danica has a very, VERY strong voice and of course that she can sing with the mic covered with that thin scarf. Do you really think that thin scarves can totally mute the sound? That’s nonsense
The mic was far away from her body, next to her arm, because the scarf pulled it away. No way her voice could have been heard with that kind of distance.
Of course it can be heard (have you ever heard Haris Dzinovic singing with the mic far far away from him? :)) I even noticed yesterday that something happened with her voice but i thought it was a technical problem. I’m just talking about what i heard here in Sava Centar.
I’m not doubting her singing skills at all. But it sounds exactly like the studio version and also someone mentioned that apparently they sang live but the video has posted the studio version instead. As someone who wasn’t at Sava Centar, I would have liked to listen to the live version too, but the video is not allowing this. That was my only concern.
It was live, but the video posted has the studio version instead. Just like RTS does every year. When the scarf got stuck on the mic it did interfere with the sound quality, but she was still audible. Maybe that’s the reason they didn’t upload the real live performance…
whatever, you will see after all how she sings live, she’s one of the best singers in Serbia
Sorry, my reply was not intended for these comments
Thanks for clearing that up.
Even Maja Nikolic is accusing RTS of allowing Balkanika of using playback, but the others had to sing live (and you can hear it in their voices). But Balkanika are exactly like the studio version.
The intro is beautiful, but then it goes downhill.
I didn’t see the ZF so I don’t know if there were better songs, but I am glad that Serbia chose to sing in Serbian (definitively a trend this year), the melody is nice and it seems that Serbia might be back in the final. But personally this artificial mix with traditional and outdated electronic music does not attract me much.
I’m sorry but I don’t like this. I can’t stand this aaAaaaAAAAaaaAaAa. This sounds like Eurovision 2008, not 2018.
I love it! Great song
Prediction: Public votes to put it in the final, jury kills that chance by placing it last.
I don’t care about the results. I’m much happier with the choice than in 2017. From now on, hopefully, Serbia will always be sending songs in Serbian language, by Serbian authors and with Serbian sound. And if we stay in the semi, let it be. To win with a song written by a foreign author would mean nothing to me (sorry Russia, Azerbaijan and everybody else who is importing songs).
No one cares!
I completely agree.
(with ‘AE’s comment)
Pesma ze tebe was literally one juror’s taste away from winning!
She finished with 52 and Nova deca had 53!
Had one juror switched their 10 and 12 between them we would have had a different winner cause it seems the rules said the Jury trumps televote.
No idea what to say about this apart from the fact it will really divide the televote and juries. Some will love it and others will absolutely hate it.
As for me nothing is pulling me either way, not even a little bit.
Awful!
Bulgaria 2007 called. Wants its song back.
Too bad it’s not as good as Bulgaria 2007. It just lacks the quirkiness that Bulgaria had to me it feels awkwardly stiff and I just wait for it to go somewhere the entire song but it doesn’t.
True that.
Serbia’s entry is better and less annoying than Bulgaria 2007
I like it!! even though it’s a bit dated.
I wanted slap the faces of everybody saying that this is another “Salvador thing”. Seriously, you’re all becoming rather annoying.
Where’s Salvador is this?
LOL at those comments. I guess those are these new kids that do not know what was happening with ESC pre-2015.
LOL at you wannabe expert, in a world outside ESC, Sanja Ilic is doing this kind of music since 2000.year, learn something about Balkan music background before making your ignorant hater comments.
Yep..an uptempo song is gonna win this year. Keep choosing ballads and you will see.
There are not many ballads this year, wtf , every year the same stupid complaints.
Wiwibloggs readers- the bigest moaners on planet Earth.
Why so many ballads?
Why so many ethnics, daaaated?..
why so many Swedish plaaaastic?..
as a conclusion- nothing is good (except Saara Alto, maybe.. but she better hurry up to realize song for two days, because in five days it will be considered dated)
Those saying no final, like, pleeasee! It is enough for this girl to just open her mouth and she is in top 10 already.
Ehhhhhhhh. This song doesn’t really go anywhere. A light smattering of traditional elements and a bit of a dance beat, but it isn’t strong on either front.
Is there a way to watch the interval act ? Apparently it was amazing 🙂
Look at the names involved! That would be a great Eurovision interval, let alone a national final! I saw Milan Stankovic’s on youtube. Hopefully others will be put up, soon.
Don’t worry, you haven’t missed a thing, all the acts were on playback…
You are still moaning why your stupid Saska song didn’t won? How pathetic, lol
Have I mentioned Saska in my comment^^?
I thought bojana sang live?
Finally another decent entry, it’s got a nice folksy sound but it doesn’t sound dated, as much as I love the old Balkan ballads for Eurovision they have a very mid 00’s sound. My only gripe so far with this song is it’s a little flat, it’s kinda the same all way through and could potentially need a bit of oomph at the end so it doesn’t sound monotonous on the main stage.
Serbia had two songs that mixed traditional and modern sounds in a tasteful way. I believe it would be easier to sell “Svatovi” to an international audience, but “Nova Deca” has more richness on it. I just think the intro could be shorter and they may have to use some staging to hold everyone’s attention until the modern beats come. One good thing is that they’ll have many people on the stage and they seem to be an interesting group of people. With good camera work, you can show all those different personas in a way people at home won’t… Read more »
Good point, Sabrina, Sanja already announced this morning that he will do rewamp of the song 🙂
Really? Where did you see/hear that? I can’t find any mention of it on the internet. I really hope they do revamp the song, because it does need a better production.
Stvarno? gde je to izjavio? bilo bi pozeljno da porade na pesmi malo.
Good to know, Eve! I would give it a shorter intro and a more powerful ending. Not that I don’t like the ending the way it is, but to make it more memorable. I also noticed that the flute sound was lower on the live performance, but maybe that was broadcaster’s fault.
Maybe not the best Serbia has to offer, but among the songs that are already selected Serbia offered one of the best. Srbi have nothing to be ashamed of, and don’t anybody tell me otherwise.
it’s alrightttttttttttttt
like it’s pretty much in the same vein as a million other balkan dramaballads like ljubav je but it’s not going to be patently offensive to anyone’s ears
i hope serbia can leap back into the finals with this, i think it’s possible
One of the most interesting entries so far this year, probably in my top three so far. Seeing the age of Sanja Ilic, I expected something super old-fashioned, but this is actually pretty damn great. This is how you do modern folk right–take notes, Greece.
S V A T O V I
Proud of our entry <3
This is my new no.1, I love it. Thank god Serbia went back to their folk roots. The English pop just wasn’t working for them.
> The English pop just wasn’t working for them.
It worked for them in 2015. Though only because of Bojana.
Salvadorable won with a traditional song from his country, half of Europe is trying to replicate the formula in a desperate attempt at doing well.
This is just us, we don’t attempt anything, take it or leave it.
Well it was about time Serbia would go back to its traditional sound we all love after three years of cute but insipid songs.
why do you always gotta make things negative man
I’m praising their choice after three years I found disappointing, y’all want me to pretend In Too Deep snatched my wig or what?
I’m long-time fan of Sanja Ilic and Danica, and honestly have no idea about their result, I’m just very glad that they keep doing their thing 🙂
AMAZING my favourite ! dirrectly to my 3rd place in my top after france and czechia ofc !
amazing choice, serbia will qualify !
I love ethnic sounds and Balkan languages. However this song doesn’t click immediately. Maybe it will grow on me later.
Sanja is a lovely girl
Sanja is the name of the male singer.
LOL
Nope Sanja is the name of the old guy with black hair and shades! He is the composer
Again – bo-o-oooring.
This new kids track seems very seen-it-before and safe for Serbia, not a fan.
Saska was the only one worth the win tonight, her voice abs killed it, all the others were just meh and lol.
But on the other hand, Europe seems to like etho-serbian music, we’ll see how will this entry be recieved in May. It’s a non qualifier for me.
I am so so happy about this! Especially after yesterday’s trainwreck of a disappointment in Armenia, I really needed this. Congrats to Serbia!!!
Thank you, dear! :*
Love love love it! My favorite along with france. Serbia is back in the final. well deserved
Even I understand each word of this song I’m not sure what to think about it at first listening.
God help us all in Serbia, this is horrible. We were good contenstant back then, but every year we are getting worse than previous. People in Serbia are shocked by songs that competed in Beovizija this year.
Are you sure you’re from Serbia?
Do you want me to send you a picture of first page of my passport or what?

Read more »
Nice to mention that the group through their activity is actually making Byzantine music still alive.

Sorry, I replied to your comment by mistake. 🙂
Sanja also composed song for Yugoslavia 1982 Halo Halo sang by group Aske.
Finally an entertaining track in this year’s ESC.
I liked it. Don’t think it is as good as Montenegro’s song on the first listen but that might change as I like to it more. The dance beat worries me.
