¡Ya está! Spain has picked its Eurovision 2019 representative and it is Miki with the song “La Venda”. The OT Eurovision Gala is now over, and the true Eurodrama can commence!
But it’s been a night full of Eurodrama as always in Spain. We’ve had a show lasting over two hours, where nine of the 16 OT 2018 contestants performed 10 songs. In the end, after a single round of televoting, Miki was announced as the winner.
He was a pre-contest favourite of ours. Wiwiblogger Robyn named him her winner, writing:
“There’s something very likeable about Miki. During OT, his best performances were the big entertaining numbers where it felt like he was really getting the party started. ‘La venda’ is one of those songs. It’s a fun bop, it’s distinctly Spanish, and brings an infectious sense of joy. If this works live (and there’s no reason to suspect it won’t), it will be a very good choice for Spain to take to Tel Aviv.”
William and Deban also reacted very kindly in their very first reaction video (at bottom).

Many familiar faces appeared on tonight’s show. We’re conscious you only care about Eleni performing “Fuego” and “Tómame”, but there was also Pastora Soler and “Toy” composer Doron Medalie in the jury, as well as Spain’s commentator Tony Aguilar. And also, Alfred did show up… but no Amaia. Eurodrama much?

They will need to up the staging for Eurovision and I don’t see the juries giving this much love. That said, it’s a decent, up beat song that might get some tele votes.

It was the best performance of the night, no doubt about it. He was cheerful, happy, energetic, he really enjoyed it and so did we. Maybe it’s not the most amazing song we’ve heard, but it’s catchy, it’s up-beat, it draws you in. You want to dance and have fun. For me, Spain made the right choice among the songs it had. Weak vocals, it’s repetition comes across as tedious, this feels like a Spanish entry from 2008, they can’t keep that staging for the contest, although I appreciate the performance I saw may have been after he won (which may explain his breathlessness, but I’m not letting those vocals off entirely) but they need to be really careful with their staging, it sounds like maybe it has some appeal to Mediterranean countries (but maybe that’s Spain hyping their own entry like they’ve been known to do) but they’re treading the line of a joke act to the rest of Europe. You must be happy because Spain doesn’t have pop music in English like most of the Scandinavian countries or central-eastern Europe. This song will receive many votes from the Mediterranean countries.
very generic and bland, it’s not particularly catchy either
Typical Spanish bop you would hear on Spanish radio in the summer-nothing special but he has a lot of charm and presence which will help it – once they get the pretty chaotic staging right! From the initial 1 minute clips of the songs that were released a while back I would have gone for La Clave but it really didn’t work for me last night.

Here we go again. Spanish people will hype it again and then disappointment starts. This song is good for Spain, it will finish better than the last songs but please don’t spam the comments with your excitement!
It needs some polishing in terms of stage presentation but it has potential to do something great. So did “Tu canción” last year so let’s hope it will turn out better. I get vibes of France 2010. Is it just me that there were some “Baila El Chiki-Chiki” similarities in melody there?

Muchas felicidades para 2019!!! I get the enthusiasm of the Spanish public. This kind of songs are very popular in Spain and Latin America. His atitude and energy is very modern and fresh. He should improve the vocals, though. I am not sure if this can come across to the general viewer…I wouldn’t put my money for it for Top 5. But maybe because this kind of music is not my cup of tea…

I don’t understand this hate towards Spain on this website, yes, they are sometimes overreacting in supporting of their entry, so what? But, they don’t offend anyone else and make disgusting hate speech, like I often saw in Wiwibloggs comments section.

We’ve been hoping that for years and still this gets flooded by hater comments against Spanish fans (and also against Greek, Polish, Romanian and Albanian fans sometimes). No one seems to have an issue with eurofans overreacting to every singer from Scandinavian countries tho, so I suppose their problem is not in the music but in the countries.
I don’t understand why there’s a lot of hate for Miki. The song is uplifting, catchy and radio-friendly. The performance was energetic and full of life. ?????

I was also very disappointed with Maria’s attitude. Girl, we all know you didn’t like the song/project.. but that performance? It was lackluster and amateurish. Natalia, on the other hand, took the opportunity and turned it out into her advantage to gain visibility and show her skills. I completely agree with you. While I liked La clave studio version, I thought it would not be the best option for Spain. But honestly, she sold it live. She was my second favorite right after Miki. Natalia, on stage, is unstoppable. She took an okay song and turned it into something brilliant. I’m really excited to see what she’ll do in the future and I hope she’ll get a record deal. That girl is fantastic.

definitely the best choice Spain could’ve made, from the moment Miki performed La venda I knew it would be the best performance of the night, I think it will stand out at ESC and I REALLY hope it can do well, wouldn’t be surprised if this stays in my top 10 and gets one of my votes in Israel, good job Spain!

Maybe some of you need help to overcome your hate towards Spain. They send a ballad? Crap, bottom 5. They send a dancing song? Crap, overrated, bottom 5. They send a catchy, fun song? Spain has indeed sent different genres over the last couple years, but that’s not the problem: regardless of the genre, most of the recent Spanish entries were either middle-of-the-way or just plain bad. Doesn’t matter if RTE changes the genre, just send something good! I’ve lived in Sevilla for a couple years, Spain is forever in my heart and I know that the music industry there is very vivid and diverse. No! You are wrong. We know spain can do better than that. They don’t need to give up. Miki will break the cycle, and than spain will be more motivated to do better and smarter(pick those who wants to go and care and ready, and those who does not want to talk about politics of other countries. ).

I really like this song, but i do feel like it’s one of those that’ll either do very well (top 10) or crash and burn (I hope it’s the former). Let’s hope the Spanish delegation don’t do their usual trick of putting on a terrible stage performance for a good song though, because that’s almost an inevitability with Spain. Keep it authentic like the performance in the video and it’ll do well.
The staging will be crap, as usual; but at least I hope we bring some fun to the festival. I think it represents very well the typical spanish party-fun mood. We do not expect to win, or at least me, but at least I hope it brings a smile to all the people who will be watching the show. Smiles are expensive this days and we are supossed to be a country that produce many of them. Hope you enjoy it. Good luck to everybody.
It depends on Europe’s mood this year for La Venda to score decently or be a total flop.
Is Europe in a deep and thoughtful Jamalian mood? Or maybe a party alternative- ish Nettian one? Maybe a sensitive with a drop of cheesy Sobralian one?. We will see. Stay tuned

I get what you are saying, here in Portugal this is the type of song that we usually hear in some “cheap” festivals and they all sound the same. Though i believe the rest of Europe is not used to this type of song and they like it. Nevertheless i believe that this will do well at Eurovision(Maybe top 10). Every year Spanish fans say the same thing, top 10 for sure. I remember last year that madness with Alfred and Amaya and their faux romance, Spain wad topping every poll here and there and guess what, bottom 5 as usual. It will happen’ again this year, mark my words…

Agree, what’s wrong with being passionate and supporting your country? On the other hand, this is not your typical song the eurofans tend to love, so maybe this year there is no overhyping and the other countries have the chance to hack the polls as well (Albanian friends… I am looking into your direction ^^ )

Funny, happy song that the eurofan will hate but the usual viewer will like, in the fashion of Alcohol is Free, Boonika Bate Toba or We Are the Winners (LT 06). I can easily see a Top 10 placement for this song.
Good song – I had it in my top 3 even. My only problem with it is that is sounds like someone sped up the song, so now it’s super fast. Still I like it.

What’s your point? If it’s “serious/mystical” (what does that even mean?), people “immediately forget about it”? And if it’s some drunken mess, people remember it forever? Please… Nothing wrong with a football anthem, at least if it’s a good one. This one is not. And I personally remember 1944 perfectly, very trippy, very classy, very Portishead-y.
Anyway, I just don’t like it. But if you do, feel free to listen to it on repeat. That’s the point of music. 😉

This one has a wonderful energy to it. Don’t know how the juries are gonna like it (this is a televote-friendly entry if I ever saw one), but I’m a fan. This is the most engaged I’ve been with a Spanish entry in quite a while, and I think if he keeps the energy up in Tel Aviv, he’ll bring the house down.
(I’ll also say this is a great “big” entry: the opener or the closer. In either case, I could see it doing well).

Don’t understand the criticism here in the comments. I think the song was the best one of the entire line up on tonight’s gala. It’s fun, catchy, makes you want to dance. If they get a good start number in the final, and create a nice staging in Tel Aviv it can do pretty well.
