In 2013, she proudly participated in a same-sex kiss on the Eurovision stage. And now Finland’s Krista Siegfrids has taken this pride to the dancefloor by performing as part of a same-sex partnership on the latest episode of Tanssii Tähtien Kanssa.

Sunday’s episode of Tanssii Tähtien Kanssa, Finland’s version of Dancing with the Stars, saw all the contestants switch professional partners for one week. All except one of the newly formed partnerships were same-sex couples.

Krista Siegfrids dances an all-female rumba

Whilst Krista has so far been dancing with Anssi Heikkilä, for the partner switch-up week the Eurovision alum was teamed up with Anniina Koivuniemi. The pair performed a rumba to Beyoncé’s “Halo”.

Rumba is the slowest of the competitive international Latin dances and allows contestants to showcase a softer, more emotional side.

Ahead of the performance, Krista revealed on social media that she and Anniina wanted to use this opportunity to dance together as a way of showcasing female empowerment:

“This show is dedicated to all wonderful women. With this presentation, we want to show that we women are stronger when we support each other. Let’s lift each other when we are weak and share strength when we are strong.”

Krista and Anniina dressed in matching dark green outfits. Despite the bottom of Krista’s dress getting stuck on the heel of her shoe for the final third of the performance, the pair still delivered a beautiful routine. As well as dancing the usual rumba steps, they also incorporated some more lyrical movements.

The pair won over the judging panel, with artistic director and choreographer Jorma Uotinen saying “It felt like dropping crystal beads into the night”. Krista and Anniina were awarded 25 points out of a possible total of 30, which put them joint third on the leaderboard.

Krista was ultimately declared safe and will move onto next week’s episode. The Eurovision star continues to perform consistently well, having scored a perfect 30 on two previous occasions.

The first same-sex kiss to be seen on the Eurovision stage was already in 2000 when Ping Pong’s Guy Asif and Roy Arad kissed each other.

I never saw that edition. Did it happen during their performance?
