Following the grand reveal of the seven acts competing in Finland’s Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK) 2022, it’s time to hear their songs one at a time. We’re now halfway through the releases and up fourth are Younghearted. The trio have dropped their entry “Sun numero”.

The song is written and composed by Younghearted themselves, with additional contributions from singer-songwriter Vilma Alina plus composer-producers Joonas Keronen and Ilkka Wirtanen.

Younghearted – “Sun numero”

“Sun numero” (“Your number”) is a song about remorse and regret following a break-up. The group look at the situation from the point of view of someone who regrets separating from their partner and wishes they could be back together. However, their ex-lover has already moved on and found someone else.

Younghearted are also exploring a new avenue of music with their UMK 2022 entry, as guitarist Emil Korkiakoski explains: “The song really shows the direction Younghearted is heading. Before, we had a more acoustic, smaller sound. Now, we’re going big right out of the gate.”

High school friends Reeta Huotarinen, Atte Ranta and Emil Korkiakoski comprise pop group Younhearted. After forming in 2015, they’ve released two albums – the first went platinum and the second earned Younghearted a nomination in the Emma Gala Music Awards (Finnish equivalent to the Grammy’s) for Band of the Year.

UMK 2022 song release schedule

The UMK 2022 songs are being revealed one every weekday starting from 13 January. They’re set to be released at 00:00 EET on the dates listed below:

  • Cyan Kicks – “Hurricane” (13 January)
  • BESS – “Ram pam pam” (14 January)
  • The Rasmus – “Jezebel” (17 January)
  • Younghearted – “Sun numero” (18 January)
  • Olivera – “Thank God I’m An Atheist” (19 January)
  • Tommi Läntinen – “Elämä kantaa mua” (20 January)
  • Isaac Sene – “Kuuma jäbä” (21 January)

UMK 2022 will take place on Saturday 26 February, starting at 20:00 CET / 21:00 EET.

The show will be held at the Logomo Arena in Turku, where the seven acts will perform their songs live for viewers at home and the jury.

What do you make of “Sun numero”? Do you think Younghearted will win UMK 2022 and represent Finland at Eurovision? Let us know all your thoughts in the comments below!

Even if it’s a not terribly surprising song, I like this. Atmospheric and enjoyable, very nice. And Finnish sounds so gorgeous.

This is just isn’t giving me anything I haven’t heard before, Finnish is gorgeous but I’m getting very generic. Bess will win this show.

It’s the first song this year of any selection to give me proper tingles. UMK is turning out to be such a surprise!

Enjoyable and pleasing, creates diversity in the final, but as for me I see other acts more likely to win. Not a bad one at all though!

Personally I think this song is truly magical! The story of the song is very relatable and the female vocalist sings this beautiful. Something tells me that this song really would stand out at Eurovision because it doesn’t follow what is popular at Eurovision and not similar to last year winner. I guess the key element is how to stage this song translate the wonderful story of the song. I would say just stay with the vibe of the music video on the stage and maybe have English subtitles as part of the stage visual similar to Italy Eurovision 2018… Read more »

This is my favourite so far. The build-up is interesting, Finnish sounds almost poetic here, her vocals are fine and the arrangement is very good.

I imagine these songs in my head before they are released, the chorus with “sun numero” was excactly how I imagined.

2/5, the tourists like it more than finnish people, it seems

This song really shows how beautiful the Finnish language is. I still prefer The Rasmus and Bess, but Finland has indeed a very strong selection this year!

Very beautiful and simple yet effective entry. I am having difficulty ranking the UMK entries they all have their appeal in different ways.
1. BESS
2. The Rasmus
3. Younghearted
4. Cyan Kicks

On a side note Jezebel keeps on growing on me! It appeals to my love for rock and although the chorus is not the most powerful one I am in love with the instrumental, guitar breaks and finale of the song. It can soon be my first/joint first place.

I think its bass line is pretty good. And it’s usually very seldom I notice something like that, but that really stuck out.

I like this song overall, but the singer’s voice feels a bit weak compared to the other female vocalists. Hopefully she sounds good live.

My absolute favorite so far. Instead of trying to find a second “Dark Side”, Finland should throw us a curve ball.

That’s what I think, they shouldn’t only stick around to a genre, it’d be great if they send something different now that they have the chance

This was the act I was expecting the least from UMK (aside from tomorrow’s act), but the song moved me and low-key it’s a potential top 5 entry.
I really loved Younghearted’s track: it’s relatable, sincere, elegant, melancholic, has a great buildup as it begins intimately and then grows as it goes, has a beautiful melody, and the language fits the song like a glove!
It’s hard for me to name a winner from UMK at this point (all songs have been good to excellent), but I’m preferring the songs in Finnish atm.

Update: When I said “tomorrow’s act” I made the comment thinking today’s act was Tommi Läntinen instead of Olivera. My bad.

Lovely. Really looking forward to see how all these are staged. Finland has really improved on their Eurovision choices after those internal selections.

It’s incredible that a national selection with 7 acts is all about diversity and quality, while some with 20+ acts barely even have anything worth a listen. Great job once again, loving the way things are going since I like all songs!

An incredible entry and my favourite so far of this national selection. It reminded me of the game Life is Strange and it could have easily be part of its soundtrack, just amazing

It’s good but it’s probably the first one of the bunch where I don’t really see it being strong enough to win. Maybe it’ll grow on me.

I was missing something like that, not just in UMK, but in the whole Eurovision season. Relatable well written lyrics and sincere storytelling. Plus it sounds very ellegant and smooth. My favorite from Finland so far.

I have to admit that I was not expecting a good song from them. But OMG, I love it, its so sweet, so touching. Till now, my favorite song, not only from UMK, but from all national selections right now… definitely this year, it seems that Finland have a great bunch of songs

This is the first song to make me shed a tear this year. I have emotionally connected with this song, because it reminds me of someone I miss. I still remember their phone number, even after 22 years have passed. Add to that, the vocal, the production, and even the acting in the background of the lyric video, are all spot on. Bravo Younghearted. Best of luck in this tough UMK year.

Really appealing, I love it. I like how it sounds so personal and intimate, but then it builds to a big epic sound. And the Finnish language sounds so pretty. I agree with others here, this has the potential to be a surprise winner.

I am sucker for that sweet, Nordic melancholia.

This is perhaps a little too subtle and unassuming to win. It feels like a knowing shrug of the shoulders rather than the life-affirming revelation that I feel it could have been.

Poor Malta. The country released more than 20 songs and all of them are less good than the actual top 4 of UMK. By the way, what a nice moving song.

My favourite so far. Love the language and how nostalgic it feels. I felt the same way I felt when listening to Clara Klingenström for the first time last year (She was my Melfest winner). I know there is almost no chance for them to win UMK but I’ll definitely listen to this song for a while.

I listened to their song Nukkumaan today and I have to say that this is a bit underwhelming in comparison to that song. Not bad tho. My top so far is:
1. Cyan Kicks
2. Bess
3. Younghearted
4. The Rasmus

UMK makes it so hard for me to actually rank the entries! So far, i want every single act to win and i think they’d all end up in my Top10!

Another beatiful entry. Just like with The Rasmus, nostalgia also hits hard but in a different way, a more emotional approach to the past. Loved its vibes! Will def check more of their songs.
