Azerbaijan has narrowed its shortlist of artists competing to represent them at Eurovision 2024 from fifteen to six following a round of live auditions and jury voting.

The six performers who made the cut are: Emy Lia, Ilkin Dovlatov & Etibar Asadli & Mila Miles, AISEL, Fahree, Qorqud and Sabina Guluzadeh.

A range of household names and up-and-coming artists are all still in the mix. One familiar name who has made the final six is AISEL – she was infamously the first Azeri Eurovision entry not to qualify for the final back in 2018, but 2024 may well be her redemption era.

For the second year running, Azerbaijan is going local and looking to showcase homegrown talent at Eurovision. The years of importing from Sweden are over, and the selection is going strong. This year, 88 out of the total 214 songs received by the broadcaster being written by local songwriters.

But Ictimai still haven’t revealed these six potential Eurovision songs, which won over the juries at the live auditions.

The broadcaster is giving the artists a chance to fully prep and prime before their entries are unleashed onto the Eurovision audience, but they did issue a social media call out for fans to submit questions to the participants.

So we should find out more about them in due course!

For now, let’s take a listen to some of the previous singles and performances of the six artists competing for the ticket to Malmö:

Emy Lia:

Ilkin Dovlatov & Etibar Asadli & Mila Miles:

AISEL:

Fahree:

Qorqud:

Sabina Guluzadeh:

Is your favourite still in the running to represent Azerbaijan at Eurovision 2024? Whose song are you most excited to hear? Let us know in the comments!

You do realize Azerbaijan liberated the occupied areas in their own country, as recognized by the whole international community, right?

Baku 2012, the lowest moment in Eurovision history. Seriously, Loreen’s first win is forever stained. I can’t understand how people can begrudge her this year’s victory. 2011 and 2012 should be wiped from the history books.

I think the reason we have not had confirmation of competing countries is because the EBU are still trying to figure out what to do about Azerbaijan and Israel. Not for moral reasons, but for PR reasons. Either way, it is going to cause them trouble. I see in the new slogan reveal on YouTube, they still feature Israeli company MoroccanOil as sponsor. Which makes it awkward for them to kick Israel out, as it would probably mean losing a lot of budget. While at the same time, it would be awkward for the EBU to NOT kick them out… Read more »

Unfortunately, I am pretty sure especially Israel will want to grab the opportunity for propaganda through their song if they compete. Last year’s Israeli song can also be interpreted in a nationalistic way though I can’t be sure if that was the intention or not. Both these countries shouldn’t compete in my opinion after all that they’ve done this year.

Also in the case of Azerbaijan, if they end up competing I am not sure if Armenia will want to compete (and rightfully so). And I also expect countries like Ireland or Iceland (and even Spain) to be against an Israeli participation.

As an atheist, may I interrupt? The Jewish narrative of the forty-year wandering Jews in the desert essentially proves that the land they settled on was not theirs. That’s me saying this even though I strongly disagree with Islam—or any other Abrahamic religion, really—because I see it as a tool used to subjugate people. Simply said, Islam is becoming more openly supportive of servitude (as is Christianity), which makes me very uncomfortable and makes me stop supporting either side.

The 40 year biblical story refers to the return of the people of Israel back(!!) to their homeland after being exiled before that, so this “narrative” as you call it emphasizes the biblical connections of the Jewish people to the land of Israel…on the same topic and of much more recent times, I hear many pro-Palestinian protesters stating a 75 years of Israeli occupation, which shows how brainwashed and ignorant most of them are, because 1) Israel holds Gaza and the West bank from 1967 (so much less than 75 years… 2) weirdly (or should I say conveniently) no one… Read more »

Azerbaijan forced Armenian residents in contested territories to flee for their lives, such that people are speculating Armenia will drop out to deal with the tragedy. Yet somehow Azerbaijan is just going to be allowed to continue like nothing happened?

Elizabeth, in fact 30 years ago Armenian separatist made Azerbaijani people flee from illegally occupied territories. And Azerbaijan has allowed Russia to create Armenia in the territory of Erivan Khanate of Azerbaijan 100 years ago. Why should we let a second Armenian country to be created in our territory? What happened – justice is restored. War is over. Azerbaijan deserves Nobel peace prize and Azerbaijan offered Armenians to stay and accept Azerbaijani citizenship. Azerbaijan cannot be accused if the Nazi mind didn’t let them stay.

In the breakup of the Soviet Union, a majority ethnically Armenian region did try to jump ship, backed by the Armenian government, despite traditionally being part of Azerbaijan. There was fighting that displaced people on both sides. That is the last time Armenia has been the agressor in this conflict. In 2020, Armenia had done nothing when Azerbaijan suddenly decided to invade to reclaim territories lost in that conflict. The international community pressured Armenia to roll over and simply give Azerbaijan the territory. Which they did after some brief resistance. The last several months, the entire region has been essentially… Read more »

It is wrong to describe them as equals. Azerbaijan are FAR worse. Armenia rely on Putin for protection because they don’t get much support from anybody else. Azerbaijan want to take complete control of Armenia in the way that Putin wants to take complete control of Ukraine. Sure, it is wrong to support Putin, but it is equally wrong for Ukraine to support Azerbaijan in the way that they do. It’s complicated.

Contested territory? Armenia occupied Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized (and not contested) territories and ethnically cleansed&slaughhtered 1M Azerbaijanis (UNSC Resolutions 822, 854, 874, 884, European Court of Human Rights [chiragov and others vs Armenia]), Official recognition of 1M Azeri victims by United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees in 2003).

United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees confirmed 1M Azerbaijanis ethnically cleansed in 2003. European Court of Human Rights described what happened to Azerbaijanis as ‘acts with particular gravity that amount to crimes against humanity’. Human Rights Watch and Memorial documented all of the mass atrocities and murder perpetrated against Azerbaijani civilians in their 1992 and 1994 reports respectively.

Do you know about the Azerbaijani Laundromat? It probably funded the “victory” of Running Scared in 2011, and the hosting of Baku 2012. Not to mention all the cheating before and after. There is not even any need to bring a genocide debate into this conversation, because Azerbaijan should be OUT long long ago.

Typical, I answered your question which statements, recognitions&resolutions of European Court of Human Rights, United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees, United Nations Security Council, Human Rights Watch and Memorial. 20% of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territories were occupied, 1M Azerbaijanis were ethnically cleansed&massacred, all the occupied cities were destroyed and razed to the ground (OSCE reports). Your denial sounds like a you problem.

Barbarism? Since when liberating your own sovereign territories in where your people were ethnically cleansed and killed is wrong? By this logic Ukraine should not be fighting to liberate its territories occupied by Russia. Armenian residents were told to stay and accept Az citizenship, they left. There is a website where they can apply for citizenship and return, UN mission (twice), CoE (Council of Europe Humab Righta Advocate mission between 18-24 October) mission to Karabakh confirmed no damage to civilian infrastructure and UN, UNHCR, ICRC declared that there were no recorded cases of mistreatment against civilian population.

UN mission (twice), CoE mission, UNHCR, ICRC explicitly mentioned that there was no damage to civilian infrastructure and there were no recorded cases of mistreatment against civilian population. Every country has a right to end occupation, so does Azerbaijan. We do not owe Armenia anything, but according to UN and OSCE reports Armenia damaged Azerbaijan costing 88 billion USD and has to pay that compensation, I’m not even talking about 1M ethnically cleansed&massacred civilian population. If you care about Armenia, maybe start donating so that they can pay 88 billion USD of compensation.

If the people of Azerbaijan want to free themselves, I suggest declaring war on the Aliyev family. They treat the people as their private property. They do not own Azerbaijan. THEY are the threat, not innocent civilians of Nagorno-Karabakh. If you wish to end the occupation of Azerbaijan, start there.

Facts: Armenia occupied 20% of Azerbaijan for 30 years (UNSC resolutions 822, 854, 874, 884, European Court of Human Rights – Chiragov and others vs Armenia), Armenia ethnically cleansed 1M Azerbaijanis (UNHCR recognition 2003, European Court of Human Rights – chiragov and others vs Armenia), Armenia razed to the ground our cities leaving nothing behind from us (UN&OSCE Minsk group reports), Armenia committed mass massacres and atrocities against Azerbaijani civilians (Human Rights Watch, Memorial, European Court of Human Rights April 2010 ruling). You can also watch documentary by a Lithunian journalist who was on the ground – it is called “Endless corridor”.
