Entries for Latvia‘s national final closed on Sunday, but broadcaster LTV is ready for fans to hear the submitted entries right now. LTV has launched the Supernova People’s Jury — a chance for fans to listen to and rate all the submitted songs.

The People’s Jury is a new step for Supernova — though other national finals have used similar public voting systems in the past.

All the entered songs — and there’s over 60 — are available to listen to on the Supernova website. But users must first be logged in with either Facebook, Twitter or the Latvian social network Draugiem.lv.

As well as an audio clip of the whole song, only the title of the song is given. The artists behind the songs will be anonymous for now, meaning that songs will be judged on the merit of the song alone, not on a big name.

Though some Latvian stars are recognisable from voice alone. Some fans have spotted at least two songs from Supernova regular and X Factor Latvia host Markus Riva.

Thumbs up or thumbs down?

Listeners can give the songs a thumbs up (Patik) or a thumbs down (Nepatik), based on whether they want to hear the song at Supernova.

The overall rankings will then be passed on to the Supernova selection panel. They’ll meet on November 5 to decide which of the entries will make the Supernova heats and will take the People’s Jury results into consideration. The number of semi-finalists hasn’t been confirmed, but last year 22 songs made it to the heats.

The People’s Jury voting period will run until Sunday 29 October, which gives fans 11 days to have their say.

We’ve started to have a quick listen to the entries. We’re hearing a lot of tropical house, songs of self-confidence, a few love love peace peace tunes, and a reggae number with the unusual title “Stop The War U2”.

But what do you think? Which are your favourite songs? Who deserves a place in the Supernova heats? Take a listen and share your favourites!

After all the songs I’ve listened to, I can safely say that Latvia has some real gems in there, along with a lot of songs that are fine, but generic, and few quite unsatisfying ones. Finally, I gave a LIKE to only 22 songs, as I thought that it was not enough for me to kind of like it, but to actually see it as being in my top 15 of actual ESC contest. So, not songs that I passed I find bad. Some are just too typical, or too repetitive, or just not for me. The songs I did… Read more »

I’m almost certain Pilites is sung by Mick Pedaja, who got to the Eesti Laul final in 2016 with “Seis”.

Weak too weak. I hope for a good revamp for whoever wins cuz not a single song goes anywhere. I did click like for 15/60something but really maybe 2 deserved it. Not a single standout for me and some songs try and then chorus is a letdown.

I like several songs thus far, although only a few I can see to be the IT songs of 2017. All three Latvian songs thus far are good, especially Baltic. It’s something different. War of Flame sounds promising, although the accent could vastly improve.

By the way, ”Are You My Friend” is a total, absolute dud, but am I the only one who is quite curious on how it would look live? It might be so bad it’s good.

I’ll continue after I listen and re-listen to them all later on.

I just finished listening to all the songs, and here is my top 10

1. Flashbacks
2. Intoxicating Caramel
3. The Way Back Home
4. Say My Name
5. Baltic
6. Stardust in Universe
7. Staccato
8. Running Red Lights
9. Funny Girl
10. This Time

However I accidentally skipped over Pil?tes, and I’ve heard that it’s pretty good

Just finished listening to all of them, I’m disappointed. I pressed the thumbs up button for probably around 5 songs, and I didn’t even love them, they were just alright. There wasn’t a single song that stood out or made me wanna listen to it twice. Some songs were musically good, but lyrically very weak or the pronunciation was awful so I couldn’t give them a thumbs up. How are they going to have 3 semi-finals with these songs?

Morning flight sounds like Triana Park’s singer’s voice

= Like
Baltic
Divi cilveki (very much)
Pil?tes
Intoxicating Caramel (cabaret style)
War of flame (Tori Amos style)
Sap?u dziesma (angelic style)
Funny girl
Circles

Song in between ‘Feel your lips’ (like) and ‘Lovers bliss’ (dislike) is the one that sounded like Maria Mena = very much liked by me, just forgot the title 😛

Dislike:
The fact that 29 songs could not play

‘Soledad’ is just a cheap Despacito rip-off

In a thumb-ip or down shift. A song like ‘Amar pelo dois” would never have reached the final cut. It leaves out the daring entries, I like two songs very much, one sounds like Maria Mena and the other one is in Latvian

I’m Latvian and I want Esamiiba to be our song next year in Lisbon.
I was blown away by it. It has meaningful lyrics and beautiful composition.
A song in Latvian for our 100th year of independence would be just right.

I’m Latvian too and this song is my favourite so far. With a good stage performance it could reach top 3 in Supernova.

I hadn’t listen to them yet,but I hope there’s something very Euphoria-ish,very”I want to ignore the whole club and kiss you”.
Latvia’s last three entries are on this vibe, and I always count on them to bring that kind of song to the table XD <3 .

Call me cheezy, but I LOVE 1000 Roses. 😀

And many other songs would be totally acceptable with a revamp (that I am sure they will receive).

I’m during hearing these songs and for now I don’t hear anything special. For now I liked only 3 or 4 songs. Walk The Talk, Funny Girl and What I Had With You… and that first one, I forgot the name of. Hopefully some potential winner vibes will come out soon…

Great to hear first songs for ESC 2018 🙂 Awesome 🙂

A question for everyone: When I click to the songs, there is only one song available. Is there a possibility to hear the next song without clicking ‘like’ or ‘dislike’ after first listening (usually, I don’t think the first impression is rating-worthy). Thanks in advance!

Joel

Nope. You have to click “patik” (Like) or “Nepatik” (Dislike). That’s basically how the juries around the Europe works.

Thanks for explaining. I will work with what I have: Instant like or lack of impact. However, usually I prefer listening to the song two or three times before making the judgement. Even so, my opinion can change after 10 or 20 hearings afterwards. There were songs I hated at first, but quite loved later on, and vice-versa. If someone spent weeks or months to present it, at least I can do is take a two or three times before saying: No, you’re out. I guess usually a really good ESC song does make an impact in the first, though,… Read more »

Oh, that’s great! One of these songs will represent Latvia in Lisbon!
I didn’t have the chance to listen to them all yet (they’re over 60), but I’ll try to listen to some of them every day.
Glad to see from the comments that there are pretty good songs this year.

After listening to 63 songs (that is all of them right? at least twice the program offered same song twice in a row) I must say – the best one is the very first one I heard: You Are My World.
Overall I gave 24 thumbs up in total (I’m mean like that).
Other good songs: Divi cilveki, Younger Days, Pray, Sapnu Dziesma, IKA

Is “bop” a new thing that people are using to describe songs? It seems to be part of the recent vernacular. Either that or “banger”.
