Up, down, all around! Now that all countries having rehearsed at least once, the Eurovision 2018 odds have shifted once more. And Estonia’s Elina Nechayeva comes out as the big winner.

Estonia has now climbed to third place, behind only Israel and Norway. On May 1st Bet365 had her odds as high as 12/1, but they’ve now halved her to 6/1.

Following her stunning first rehearsal, fans and critics said yes to Elina’s dress. Our readers ranked “La Forza” as their favorite rehearsal on day one. While other countries suffered both vocal and technical difficulties, Elina stayed strong at her second rehearsal.

France has fallen to fourth position with the bookmakers. Over the past week they climbed like no other act and surged from 12th to second position. However, their odds, which were as high as 7/1 on May 1st, have risen to as high as 10/1 with a few outlets.

Cyprus pushed into the top ten after their hip-shaking, hair-whipping first rehearsal. And Eleni Foureira has continued to rise with the bookies. She’s now sixth favourite to win with odds as low as 10/1 at Betway.

Australia‘s Jessica Mauboy now sits in ninth position. She’s been in the top five for more than a month but fell out following her first rehearsal. And her odds continue to widen, with Bet365 pushing her odds from 12/1 to 33/1. Ouch.

The remaining countries in the top ten haven’t changed that much. Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Sweden and Italy round out the Top 10.

When Loreen rose to the top with the bookies after melodifestivalen everyone hated on her for the fact she was 1st – she then won easily and deserved to win. Same with Netta and La Forza. I love both Israel and Estonia and would also be happy if France took the victory, but people stop hating on songs because the bookies have made them first! Also, Netta and Estonia have delivered faultless 2nd rehearsals however all the singing experts here don’t seem to think so???… comments about staging and coldness blah blah blah honestly?!?

The only thing I need to say today is that the winner will be a surprise. No one has the full package like Salvador, Jamala, Emilie or Loreen. This will be like 2011.

No Estonia, no Israel, no Bulgaria, no Cyprus, no France. So sorry for the last two.

The winner is between 10 and 20 in the odds. That’s my feel. Or Italy, I hope.

Loreen and Emilie already performed as conscious winners. You could see the winner smile of Loreen at 0:30 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pfo-8z86x80

The other two won by sheer emotional performances on the big night. They were in the bunch of favorites, but nothing was assured beforehand.

The atmosphere the final gala reaches is unthinkable for us now, so predicting a winner out of the blue is nothing but bold predictions.

One thing is clear to me. Rybak may finish high. I always thought his experience will make him come back strong again and it’s proving for a possible top 5 position, but…

…no way the big audience chooses him as a repeating winner. No chance executing this violin concept again. He should’ve come with something different but I guess he doesn’t care about winning again.

Europeans have memory. Norway winning would be an insult to the efforts of the rest.

To be honest this whole Estonian fandom vs Israel fandom should stop. I know most people defend their favourites because they want to be right about the final results but I think there are many talented acts this year to just limit it to two. Estonia’s entry is one of the most divisive ones this year. It will get high points but likewise it will have nil from some countries. Wish you well, brothers in Estonia. But I am afraid of the “Estonia effect”, known from 2011, 2014 and 2017. Getter Jaani, Tanja, Koit and Laura – all too good to be DQ’d. Love from the northern shore of the Gulf of Finland <3

The odds are nonsense this year. Netta’s lackluster rehearsals should make the odds more evened out, ot have her remain as the clear favourite. Norway and France are way overrated and live on pure hype from ESC die hard fans. Outside of ESg blogs and news sites and ESC fans, almost no one’s talking about Rybak or “Mercy”. The common viewer and likely voter won’t care that Rybak won Eurovision 9 years ago or the story behind “Mercy” in a language the vast majority of them won’t understand and the juries have likely been instructed to look past the things… Read more »

Outside of ESC blogs and news sites – no one is talking about Eurovision at all. The common viewer is not interested in any of this until the day when he maybe tunes in and then watches maybe half of the performances, settles on a favorite based on the quality of the performance on the day and the amounts of beers he had that evening – and if we’re really lucky picks up the phone and votes. You couldn’t be more right! Maybe the time when betting odds can’t predict the winner have come. I don’t think the common mortal is checking ESC websites, betting or being attentive to what’s goimg on right now in Lisbon. The last word will depend on the common viewer: the granny knitting, the Gen-Z stuck on their phone, the husband who’s been back from the toilet, the non-Eurofan who wants to laugh at any oddity, etc. All of them are true votes… for whom? We’ll find out about that soon.

A beutyfull song. But do you think the viewer will vote for a female opera singer?

Those who listen to opera don’t look at ESC and the rest usaly like when men are singing opera. They think the feemales are screaming. NOT MY OPINION, but afraid many think so. Some screaming lady does not put you in the mood for opera, I would say good voices screaming with passion like Albania, Romania, why not AWS , even Bugaria can make you interested in the richness of human voice. Also in opera right now the trend is to perform the same classical operas in modern clothes, to make the characters realistic, normal people that are living the same drama right now. So no pedestal needed for a good voice with a good song.

Estonia should not count on Italy, they may be flattered at first that it’s in italian and that it’s opera( for italians opera is pretty much an italian thing) but they will also be the first to notice that it’s incomprehensible and secondly because many many italians ( and I expect even more the juries) know a lot about opera. The reason why a popera entry will be unlikely to win ESC anytime soon is not due to the televoters jut the juries. Every single popera entry we’ve had has been rated higher by the televoters than the juries. Heck, in 2015, Italy WON the televote.

Estonia’s biggest hurdle will be the juries, not the televoters.

Theres no real comparing between Estonia this year and Italy in 2015. They were three hot guys giving a dynamic performance. The words they sang were clearly pronounced and it was more of a rock-ballad song than just an opera melody. Its far more accessible and relatable to a mass audience than what Estonia is offering this year. That is why they won the Televote and it tells you nothing about how opera is perceived by the general public voting form home.

Estonia is like Portugal last year. Climbing the odds, day by day, until the final where it will likely get to be the #1 favorite. Israel is an over-hyped mess, just like Italy last year (which, by the way, was a much better song than Netta’s). It will not win, not even close. Rebecca Black also got millions of views with her song “Friday” on YouTube… because of shock value, just like Netta and her chicken noises. It doesn’t mean anything. My point was that your statement that “Estonia will never make it to #1 with the bookie” is false, proven with facts. Estonia was high with a reason, the song was revealed during that time. Who envys that fat girl who makes chicken noise And plays with her looper? ? Thats sooooo “classy” and “beautiful”… Nothing special there. To be honest, i find that performance embarrasing. Nothing to be proud of.

netta has the best song and even with an average staging she’s capable of winning, after all it’s not only the staging that matters

I wouldn’t say it’s the best song, there are A LOT of great songs and performers this year. Israel managed to create a lot of hype, it had a catchy video, which backfired, because it’s hard to replicate it on stage. And what about the people who will hear the song for the first time on stage? They likely won’t like it as much. So yeah, a lot of question marks here.

Wait for the actual performance and tell me if you didn’t get the video replicated on stage okay? You watched some 45 seconds of a rehearsal that didn’t give you any of the camera angles (which is what the video is all about) and you’ve already decided that the magic won’t get replicated? Thats foolish.

Netta is not perfect live. in fact, she’s far inferior to Elena. Netta has a better song but much worse staging and worse live vocals. These are the facts.

Estonia seems to be the SF1 winner, but I don’t think she will win the contest. I expect Bulgaria and Italy to fall out of the Top 10, as well as Israel and Norway to go down a bit.

Odds are not an indicator of how good a performance is. Reviews of experienced eurovision journalists are. And they agree that Netta’s performance won’t win as it is now. The odds might indicate how much hype there is around something, or that someone spent a lot of money betting on certain country. The odds won’t perform instead of Netta.

William says what he thinks, and he’s been right about a lot of things. Other people might be more careful with their opinions because they don’t want to sound rude or xenophobic and attract hate. They play it safe. People voting at homes won’t have this problem. They judt won’t vote if they don’t like something.

First of all, who are these “journalists” you speak of? I didn’t hear them making any such predictions in definitive terms. Correctly so because no one can know exactly what will happen on the day and ESC is super arbitrary. In any event to decide that Netta’s staging is weak without seeing the camera angles which are at the core of what made the music video the success it is – is silly. Wait till SF1 watch the actual performance and then lets talk.
