Rumours have been swirling for months that we might just be getting international star Madonna to grace the stage in Tel Aviv. While negotiations have been ongoing, major financier Sylvan Adams has indicated that, so far, things are “looking very good”.
The Jerusalem Post reports that the Canadian-Israeli billionaire has been apparently wooing the singer for months. Speaking at the Keshet INTV Conference at the YMCA in Jerusalem, Adams said he became involved with the upcoming Eurovision in Tel Aviv in the hopes of bringing a huge-name artist to the show.
“We’ve reached out to Madonna to try to add a little bit of glitz to the event. It’s looking very good that she’s going to come here and participate in the Eurovision Song Contest.”
Israel’s Mako reported that Madonna’s fee is $1.5 million. That’s reportedly for singing just two songs.
The move fits with Adams’ ongoing efforts to fashion himself as a cultural emissary and broker for Israel. He previously brought the prestigious Giro d’Italia to country. The cycling event, which mostly takes place in Italy, had its starting leg in Israel last year.
He’s currently establishing a cultural foundation to bring artists to Israel in order to promote its standing in the world. Israel calling, anybody?

It’s ridiculous. It looked like KAN’s scheme to show off how to make a luxurious show, when they actually have a huge financial problems organizing the show. It’s awesome to have Madonna on stage, but it’s either they’re using Sylvan Adams as they money machine or they’re just plain nuts about that fee.
They should spend the money on a bigger concert hall so more fans can attend.

There are now reports that Madonna’s new song which she plans to sing at ESC is highly political and there has been some arguments between KAN and her team about whether she should sing that song. Within KAN there are those who think she should have artistic freedom to pick whatever song she wants and others who feel that it could politicize the contest.
I’m Brazil and I heard that on the radio (which is weird because nobody knows ESC here). They said her participation is unlikely because she will only sing if they let her perform that “controversial song”.
If they were smart, they would spend those money on bringing more countries in the contest, gaining more exposure and also breaking the record for the most countries. But they are not smart….

I’m okay with inviting global stars to increase the competition’s appeal, but I think a lip-syncing has-been won’t do that.
The last real hit she had was “Hung up” which was released in 2005. “4 minutes” with Timberland and Justin Timberlake in 2009 did also sell pretty well.

I am not sure about this. I can see it happen – she is releasing new music this year and apparently already shot a video for her first single – so the timing with a big performance in May would be kind of perfect to promote her single. But that’s the thing that bugs me – Eurovision is about european artists who celebrate music and each other. Exactly. Eurofans seem to forget that we’re a tiny percentage of the people watching the show. While I would personally rather see an Israeli act, this will bring positive attention to the show and maybe even give us some new Eurofans come next year!
