For the past four years, Spanish broadcaster RTVE has selected their artists using a varied bunch of preselection processes. These included the Objetivo Eurovision fiasco in 2017 and Operación Triunfo‘s massive ratings win at home….albeit unsuccessful results in the contest. Now, for Eurovision 2020, Spain says goodbye to its preselections. ¡Hasta la vista!
The Spanish broadcaster has announced today that the Spanish act will be selected internally. It’s a change that Toñi Prieto hinted at recently, and one which many fans craved.
But that’s not all. RTVE has also announced that they will reveal the artist soon — and apparently it’s a well-known artist.

Spain goes back to internal selection
From Objetivo Eurovisión to Operación Triunfo to internal selection, Spain proves once more that they will leave no method unturned in selecting their act. In the last decade, the Spanish Broadcaster has selected their act through seven different formats. These formats include: Eurovisión: el retorno (2009), Destino Eurovisión (2010), Mira Quien va an Eurovisión (2014), Objetivo Eurovisión (2016 and 2017) and Operación Triunfo (2018 and 2019). The three internal selections were Pastora Soler (2012), El Sueño de Morfeo (2013) and Edurne (2015).
Interestingly, the last time Spain didn’t finish in the bottom 5 was with Edurne back in Vienna at Eurovision 2015.
Little is known about who will succeed Miki Nuñez at Eurovision. However, RTVE have already signalled two things: it will be revealed soon, and it’s a well-known artist!
*May your guesses flow*
Spain’s last internal acts
Spain’s internal selections have had varied results: One top 10 performance, one bottom two and one 21st place in a field of 27 songs. However, for many fans, Pastora Soler (ESC 2012) still remains their top Spanish act ever.
As RTVE points out, the 2012 edition has been widely acknowledged as one of the best editions. Spain proved to be up to the challenge thanks to Pastora, who gave the country its first top 10 performance of the decade and its first since 2004.
However, neither El Sueño de Morfeo nor Edurne shared the same luck. Both internal acts failed to convince Europe. And since Edurne, Spain hasn’t done much convincing at all.
Rumour has it…
Recently, RTVE content director — Fernando López Puig — made clear that Operación Triunfo should not serve as RTVE selection process in an interview to Cadena Ser,
But, rumour has it — and speakers of said rumour want it to be true — that Rosalía has been asked. However, as Fernando explains, “well-known artists don’t want to risk it [in Eurovision].”
Could Rosalía be the known face RTVE is teasing?
The news comes just days after knowing recently acclaimed Cristina Ramos — Spain’s 2016 Got Talent winner, America’s Got Talent Champion‘s finalist and current Britain’s Got Talent contestant — said that she would like to do Eurovision.
Recent internal selections have produced mixed results for Spain. Is the Iberian Nation playing it right by going internal? And would an internally selected act finally bring Spain out of the bottom 5? Which selection process is more favourable to get a good result?
Rock opera GODDESS @CrisRamosStar just took singing to another level ? Check out her mind-blowing #BGTChampions performance https://t.co/RtuFjTf1Vu

Beatriz Luengo please
Why are the spanish so obsessed with ruth lorenzo? I hope she wont come back
This will get so many dislikes but I would like to see Manel Navarro have another shot!
she’d never do it unfortunately 🙁
Why not give a chance to Brequette or Mirela?
pls choose Alvaro Soler his song La Cintura still is my jam…
TBH I wouldn’t mind seeing some artists from Operacion Triunfo, like Raoul, Agoney, Natalia, Maria, Lola Indigo, Aitana – they all have great music!
I bet it’s Silvia Pérez Cruz
Surprised no one is mentioning Aitana, she tried out for Eurovision before and has since kinda blown up. Like her song teléfono was huge internationally.
She’s very popular over here to do ESC I think and busy with her tour so Idk. She would be great though.
”Internationally”…lol
Latin America has a big music market. To get your big break there is a dream for many Spanish artists.
I’d LOVE Ruth Lorenzo again!
Blas Cantó could be the one. Don’t know why, but that was my first thought after reading the news yesterday. I don’t really think it is Rosalia because she is earning a lot of money here and there and Eurovision is a not-paid job. Not only she wouldn’t be payed, but she would be also losing money from not doing concerts and following the demanding Eurovision schedule. I would dare to say she’s not interesting in doing Eurovision as an artist either and she is already known outside Spain. So taking everything into consideration Rosalia is a NO. There are… Read more »
I am secretly hoping for Enrique Iglesias. For me he’s more “well-known” than say Ruth Lorennzo, especially outwith Spain. It really depends what “well-known” means, Are they well-known in Spain? are they well known within the ESC community? or Are they well known Globally?
the fandom’s fantasy sometimes is hillarious. Who is gonna write that they hope Shakira will represent spain?
Prepare for disappointments then
Lola indigo with a song like Lola bunny will me epic. But I am afraid that they will mess up the song selection so let’s wait and see….
I would love to see Lola Indigo with a song like ya no quiero na. I believe it would bring Spain in the top 10
Let’s face it: Rosalía is too big for Eurovision as things stand.
Am I the only one who doesn’t understand why Spain is not doing better at the contest? Maybe they should send in artists that sing in English/Spanglish? Other than that: beats me why they rank so low most of the times.
Sorry, never again English for Spain ! It´s absolutely horrible for me.
TVE shouls send a good act and song in Spanish. That´s all ! Look at Italy and Portugal…..
Rosalia isn’t that “very well known artist” and than Cristina, 99% of Spanish people have never heard about her. Tve are shirking the Eurovision responsibility again.
The results of Spain are very bad year after year. Therefore, our singers do not want to go, there is fear of being pointed out and guilty of failure. TVE never does things well and that does not make things easier. I hope that, if Cristina Ramos goes, the Europeans behave well with her. She is a good girl, undervalued in Spain. We need help from European fans to get Spain out of its eternal bottom. From a Spanish boy.
I’m not surprised if Lola Indigo ends up being selected and Wiwibloggs will be crazy over it.
Alvaro Soler
Rosalía is too successful and busy for Eurovision unfortunately. I have a feeling that ESC has become a trash event for Spanish people, since they barely acheive good results. Like f.ex. Germany in the 2000’s
There was a time when it did reach those ‘trash event’ low, which is part of why Chikilicuatre 2008 came about: the general feeling at the time was that, since we were losing anyway, we’d be better off sending a joke act than ruining an actual musician’s career. I’d say we Spaniards have at least moved on from that phase.
I would love to see Ruth Lorenzo back in the esc, but some nouns like Rozalén or Lola Índigo appear to have more chances.
Rosalia, unfortunately, does not have the time needed for the contest
Cristina has the voice and charisma, but who would wrote her right song?
omg i just realized this means no articles bout operacion derrota this year…. that show is BORING
Lmao
Unless you’re a dedicated OT live feedster.
I can’t wait for them to win the contest
HAHA
Have fun waiting…
Love to see your pessimism, guys. It really indicates Spain’s downfall in the contest lol
Well, it was expected, for both Spain and UK to go intern at some point, like Switzerland. NFs are expensive when you’re barely aiming for qualifying or not be Bottom 5. And results in hand, Internals are really having more success than NFs, the whole Top 3 past year and two out of three this year. The only NFs which seem to work good results on the contest with regularity at this point are the Nordics and Sanremo.
Albania is doing alright
I actually forgot about Albania for a second, and that that FiK is my second favourite NF.
Fortune….
Solid picks both, if either of them go. Again, though…Famous. Well-known. Great voice. Wants to do it. Right there.
Just yesterday they aired the AGT Champions final here in South Africa, and I thought to myself “Gosh, Cristina Ramos would be so perfect for Eurovision!” So to now hear that she herself wants to go to Eurovision makes me so stoked. The notes she can hit are insane. I’m already foreseeing a Spanish zero gravity… “Gra gra gra gra gravedad cero” lol 🙂
If they chose Cristina next thing will be EBU rejecting her: “Rules don’t allow going than the 7th octave. That doesn’t fit our concept of voice”
Wow, why does this have so many dislikes, do people not understand?
That’s good sarcasm over there.
Ruth Lorenzo coming back??
As much as I like national finals, I think both Spain and the UK did what they had to do at the moment. Let’s hope BBC and RTVE don’t mess things up.
There’s no way Rosalía would do Eurovision. Best case scenario (in terms of current chart success in Spain): Lola Índigo or Blas Cantó. Cristina is great for Got Talent but I don’t see her in Eurovision, she would not be able to perform Queen songs there. But it’s not like I’m a fan of the Zero Gravity/My Friend kind of entries to begin with.
Rosalia said she’d be open to it if she had creative control
It would be funny to see both Cristina Ramos and Floor Jansen in Rotterdam.
They ruined La Venda with the staging and revamp, they could do the same with a great song.
YES!!! CRISTINA ?? HER VOICE AND HER STAGE PRESENCE ARE AMAZING
Probably what they mean by “well-know”, it probably means in Spain alone, not internationally.
It seems unlikely that it will be a huge star, probably relatively well-know. Big Spanish artists don’t want to take the risk (like Rosalía). Like the BBC, RTVE made the right move here! ARD made the wrong choice, so let’s see how France and Italy choose theirs…
Rosalía would be great, but I’m not sure if she would do Eurovision. Anyway, I hope for a great artist with a good song. I really miss Spain in the TOP 10.
Who knows? Maybe it’s Ruth Lorenzo.
I think it’s going to be Diana Navarro. She said she’d love to do Eurovision. Even more, she almost was internally selected for Lisboa, but OT imposed.
y’all need to get a grip. rosalía would never consider eurovision, especially now that she’s big in south america n clearly chasin another type of success. it’ll probably be someone international fans have never heard of, n that’s fine with me as long as the song is good
Mabel to Rotterdam!!!
Us Brits want Mabel thank you!
Mabel winning MelFest
