Which Tornike Kipiani Eurovision song do you prefer?

Last year was a dark year for Eurovision fans. Following the cancellation of the 2020 contest, 41 songs never made it to the Rotterdam stage. Luckily, many artists from the class of 2020 are returning to compete at Eurovision 2021.

A record-breaking 26 artists received the comeback ticket. And with that, comparisons to their previous entries are inevitable. So, we want to hear from our readers. In this series of polls, we’re asking you which is better — their 2020 song or 2021 song?

Next up, we’re heading to Georgia. In 2020, Tornike Kipiani was set to represent his country with the song “Take Me As I Am”. This year, he’s headed to Rotterdam with “You”. Two songs, with two very different vibes. But which do you prefer? Vote in our poll now!

Scroll down to vote in our poll.

“Take Me As I Am” (Georgia 2020)

Tornike Kipiani originally earned the Georgian Eurovision ticket after winning Georgian Idol. His song was internally selected at a later date. “Take Me As I Am” examines the pressures that Tornike feels to model himself on others. Someone in his life wants him to “talk like an Englishman”, “dress like an Italian” and “dance like a Spanish guy”. The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of musical unprofessionals — scored Tornike an average of 5/10.

“Are three minutes of Tornike Kipiani and his backing vocalists belting out enough? No, they are not, of course they are not”, says wiwiblogger Luis. “The grit, the aggressiveness, the boldness of this song are addictive. Georgia manages to make you forget about any other thing in this world while it’s on, and when it ends, it leaves a kind of void which can only be filled by another play.”

“You” (Georgia 2021)

“You” marks a departure from the grit of Tornike Kipiani’s 2020 entry.

It’s a lighter, more romantic and intimate track with orchestral instrumentation and flourishes.

Poll battle — Georgia: Which Tornike Kipiani entry is your favourite?

In this poll, you can only choose one song as your favourite — so be decisive, and choose wisely. As always, you can only vote once. Let the battle commence!

With both of these songs my reaction was the same: the first time it was like “wtf” but then i started enjoying the song. I prefer 2020 entry, although “You” is a very cute song actually.

That being said, I think Georgia may have some problems to qualify this year, (imo) increased due to lack of neighbours… One thing for sure, Tornike will give relax vibes to Rotterdam´s night, and I hope he does well with that

In 2020, Georgia was in my top 10.
In 2021, Georgia is last in my top.

For me: “Take Me As I Am” – 9/10
“You” – 2/10

“Take Me As I Am” would have done better in the contest. I acknowledge that. However…
About “You” – I like listening to this song. I know it feels slow for 2021, but the variety of songs is one of the main reasons I love Eurovision so much. “You” stands for those who want to chill out, sigh and relax. So enjoy it if you can, and please don’t apologise. 🙂

Even though I didn’t like ”Take me as I am” that much, I admire it much more than ”You”. I believe last year we could surprisingly see Georgia in the top 10 for the first time (I think)

Last year I wasn’t keen, but this year I really like you – it reminds me of a song by the smiths.

Surely this is one of the easiest choices of all 2020 vs 2021 songs. Last year was different and exciting, this year is a toilet break

I listened to You randomly this week and it’s actually a nice song – chilled out and not really like anything else in the contest this year. Reminded me of some Ben Howard stuff

‘Take me as I am’ would stand out so much more in sf2. I rly think SJB would stage that song pretty well. ‘You’ doesn’t do much for me right now but as every entry in this contest, you never know what could happen during rehearsals.

Tough one.
He’s a handsome guy though, I think we can all agree there.
He also has a great voice, it’s just a shame he’s been let down twice can’t the song.
But hey, nice to look at, phrwoarrr

Well this one is the biggest surprise of the year for me. I really didn’t like the xenophobia in Take Me As I Am, and I was all prepared to not like this year’s entry as well but it has completely blown me away. You is the song which has the deepest emotional resonance of any song in the contest for me. From the gentle introspective start to the glorious conclusion which is as wide as the universe itself, this song gives me chills and gets me welling up every time it comes on. The way that it gets to… Read more »

I don’t feel that the lyrics were towards xenophobia, but were meaning that he doesn’t want to impress her being something different than himself. That’s why he talks about some ”stereotypes” from the most known western European countries. He doesn’t hate these countries at all (even he recognises some good facts about them based on stereotypes like ”spanish men are good dancers, italian men know how to dress etc”),but he says that he is a Georgian man that cannot become a combination of English, Italian, Spanish, French and German men.

Fair enough, that is your interpretation. My interpretation was that it perpetuated tired stereotypes about people with different nationalities and I prefer to look beyond stereotypes. The comments made in the song are the types of things I would expect to hear from xenophobes and as such it is difficult for me to support them. But his 2021 is immense and totally universal and I and right behind it!

Can’t support anyone who posts the finger to anyone who does not like his song. Anger issues alert

This is a clear one. While both songs show the variety of style Tornike is able to do, Take Me As I Am was amazing especially in terms of music, You is overall an ok song, you won‘t turn it off when its on the radio but I fear that this is just to weak for a competition like ESC.

Neither. Take me as I am was at least different and authentic. You is a generic boring ballad. So, my vote goes to the first one.
