Moldova in Eurovision 2023: Pasha Parfeni with “Soarele și Luna”
Pasha Parfeni — real name Pavel Parfeni — is a 36-year-old Moldavian singer and songwriter. His mother was a music teacher and his father a singer, so he grew up in an environment full of music and developed his passion from a very young age. From 2008 to 2009 he was a member of Moldavian band Sunstroke Project. In 2009 the band participated in the national selection with the song “No Crime,” which Pasha composed. He participated in numerous music festivals, including the George Grigoriu International Pop Music Festival (2009, 1st place), Slavianski Bazaar (2009, 2nd place), Mamaia Contest in Romania (2009, 1st place) and the iconic Golden Stag Festival (2009).
He’s participated in Moldova’s national selection several times, but is best known for his 2012 effort when he won with the song “Lăutar”. That secured him the ticket to Eurovision 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he finished 11th in the grand final.
What do the “Soarele și Luna” lyrics mean?
“Soarele și Luna” describes a love as magical as the folk stories it alludes to. The English title is “The Sun and The Moon”, and the entire song is built around metaphors, folk symbols and natural elements. Together they give love a brand new dimension and elevate it to something holy and spiritual, driven by the force of the cosmos.
From the very start, we learn that this song is about a wedding: “Dense leaf forest/ I think I’ve found my bride.” The Sun and the Moon seem to take control of the nuptials, giving their most powerful blessings to the couple: “The Sun and the Moon…will hold our wedding crown”.
The lyrics include the presence of numerous natural elements. Notably, the forest and the the Nistru River create complete harmony between the lovers and the nature surrounding them. The “seventh evening” carries still more folk significance. In folk stories, the seventh day — Sunday — is the one on which God rested after he finished creating the world. It is also known as “The Day of Sun” and it is dedicated to rest, family and love.
The music video presents characters from folk stories: the women with horns symbolise “muma pădurii” — Mother Forest, who protects the wild but also the love described in the song. The man with a pan flute represents “Statu-Palmă-Barbă-Cot”, a folk character and very small old man, who also protects their love. The song transports us to a folk fairytale where nature and magic create a holy and cosmic weeding. This love is pure and never-ending.

Yes! I love these kinds of ethnic bops! Now that I know what the lyrics mean in English, I like it even more. I hope Pasha does well! I loved Lautar as well and still listen to it often.
Not your typical wedding song
Loving this for Pasha and for Moldova, praying for a top-10 finish
This sounds like a lovely wedding, one I would gladly attend. No aisles, white dresses, flower girls, photographers, rehearsal dinners, DJs, pina coladas, priests, tuxedos, confetti, six-tier cakes, fake tan, best man speeches, patriatchal giveaways… perfect.
I’d like to know what Pasha’s bride promised him, though, or why she couldn’t organize the wedding and ring herself.
This is the epic ethnic bop I have been waiting for Moldova to send.
I know you like Doctor Who… did you see the Dalek auditioning to be the UK act?

Finally, a good looking man with a great voice. I said a man. Not the screaming midget from Finland…who will get masacrated by the juries in the Final…
Not a massive fan of those 2, but Finland’s song is at least more creative than Pasha’s boring typical folk fusion. Moldova won’t receive too many jury points either if they put on their usual kitsch show, I think.
oh wow. you’re gonna look so dumb in may
Finland did so poorly. lol I liked both, no need to be mean.
Being Norway and Sweden there and you choose to hate on Finland wtf
My favorite, tied with Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and France
Currenty on my forth place (Spain is on first, Serbia second and Finland third)
This song has everything I love when I look for stuff I’m not used to listening to: it’s folk, it’s in a language I rarely hear, it’s cleverly written and well-produced 🙂
My favourite this year!
All of us in Europe, from the British Isles to Ukraine and everywhere in-between, we should all be helping each other to turn back to our folk traditions. The solution to climate anxiety, the sense of meaning and identity, healthier attitudes towards sexuality and the balance of masculine and femininity; it’s all there. Nature is the great teacher.
Also, thank you Moldova for reminding us of this with such a banger! Top 10 for Pasha in May.
I’ve also heard an interpretation that this song is about a soldier meeting their end deep in the woods, in the battlefield, “marrying” death, “crown” – the forrest bed being his grave, “sun and moon” meaning him passing over from the living world “sun” to the dead “moon”.
Such a beautiful song. I hope he does well with it!
