Wiwi Jury Cyprus Edition: Doody with “Magic”

As we continue our tour through Cyprus’ Eurovision Song Project, the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — comes to Doody with his song “Magic”. Doody — probably not his real name — is the brother of Constantinos Christoforou, a very successful singer who took part in ESC three times: in 1996, in 2002 (as part of One) and in 2005. Did Doody live up to his brothers’ high expectations? Read on to find out…

William: I’ve never thought about what Cypriot R&B might sound like. Now that I’ve heard Doody, I’ll never do so again. This song lacks the magic of its title. I also question why anyone would willingly call himself Doody, which obviously makes me think of excrement. But the name is appropriate: This song is total crap.

Score: 2/10

Robyn: This is a classic boyband ballad, the sort of thing Nsync were singing 15 years ago, but this time it’s just Doody singing on his own. He doesn’t have the strongest voice and is pretty pitchy at times. He sounds more confident rapping, but that part comes with the unfortunate introduction “Doody on the mic”. I assume the word ‘doody‘ doesn’t have the same meaning in Cyprus as it does in English-speaking countries.

Deban: I don’t care if he’s the brother of Constantinos Christoforou or the daughter of Britney Spears, the fact remains that he’s lumbered with an outdated song which has no place in today’s pop culture. In addition, his mediocre voice wouldn’t grab me in a pub karaoke contest, let alone the biggest song contest on the planet! How did this advance to the finals? What was Cyprus thinking?

Judit: Yeah, typical boyband song, but he’s really cute and fans can appreciate that. If I only focus on the song, well this isn’t strong enough and I don’t think it has a real chance. His voice is just OK and the song is middle-class. Who knows what Cyprus think about him…

Patrick: This is probably the worst song in the National Selection. Doody can’t sing and that’s the bloody point of it all. There were many amazing artists in this selection, like Maria Evangelou or Ioanna Protopapa who both got eliminated but Doody went to the final. He’s only there for the teenage girls. That’s it. The song is so dated, the sound is from the 00s and the lyrics are dull and cheap. If he represents Cyprus in Vienna, there will be no final again, ever!

Billy: It’s all messed up here. “Magic” would do well in Junior Eurovision, but not in the adult one. He is not mature enough for this huge event. The chorus is repeated 4 times, and the word “Magic” makes up most of it. I do not like the music, as these beats remind me of China, maybe Hawaii. The song would not attract TV viewers. I actually question how this made it so far.

Kristín: Oh my, oh my..don’t actually know what to say. Well, he’s a good-looking boy, and he seems to be enjoying what he’s doing, which is always a good asset for a singer IMO. But the song itself is rather weak, I’m afraid, and the rapping doesn’t help at all! Should he have any chance of making it to Vienna, his brother needs to do some serious magic and make this song worth the viewers while. And in honor of all that is pure and good in this world…LOSE THE RAP PART!

Sami: There’s nothing magical here! I’m pretty sure I’ve heard this a thousand times, especially in early 2000s. Cheap, dated and very boring. He looks like a pop star, though.
