Bend it like Buranovskiye! Babushki release video for “Football 2018” (Olé, Ola)

Ladies and gentlemen, your stars of the 2018 FIFA World Cup: Messi, Ronaldo…and Babushki.

Yes, the Buranovskiye Babushki — Russia’s Eurovision 2012 act — are back and they have that football fever. Ahead of Russia’s hosting of the World Cup in two years time, the Babuhski are already getting into the spirit.

Buranovskiye Babushki — Football 2018 (Olé, Ola)

This could be the music video of the year. What can top a group of Russian grandmothers playing football in front of a half-empty stadium?

The video was filmed in the Metallurg Stadium, home of Russian team Krylia Sovetov. We’re going to assume it’s their fans who keep on randomly appearing in different background shots of the video. Continuity, eat your heart out.

In all seriousness, though, it’s nothing you wouldn’t expect from the Babushki. It’s a dated, slightly folks-y party number, which is what makes it so endearing, and the “Olé, Ola” hook is a real earworm. Plus the group look like they’re having fun.

We also get a glimpse of future Babushki, when a younger singer joins the group to help close out the song. Russia won’t have far to look for their next Junior Eurovision entrant!

This isn’t the first time that the Babushki have dove into a sporting theme. In 2014, member Galina Koleva carried the Olympic torch on its journey to Sochi. It leaves us wondering what sport they’ll try tackling next!

There’s no indication whether this will be one of the official songs of the World Cup. But if England can be so motivated behind “Three Lions”, then we’d hope Russia can get behind “Football 2018”.
