Over the past month, the Wiwi Jury has been reviewing and scoring the songs competing in Eurovision 2017. But what do our readers think? We’ve collected up all the scores y’all have been giving in each jury post, we’ve calculated the averages and have come up with a readers’ jury. And there are a few surprises in there.

We took a look at all the scores for people who had scored at least five countries. This was to remove scores from readers who only showed up to give 10/10 for their favourite song and nothing else. This gave us a collection of scores from 25 readers. We also removed the highest and lowest scores to remove outliers and reduce potential bias.

The number one favourite of wiwibloggs readers was Belgium‘s entry, Blanche with “City Lights”. This earned an average score of 9.18, a big increase on the Wiwi Jury score of 8.67.

Wiwi reader L’oiseau had this to say about the song:

Belgium is in my top 2, again! They have been nailing it every other year. I like the contrast between her linear, but yet profound singing and the rich and complex beats and rhythms. When it excels towards the end when Blanche change the key. So much going on in those three minutes, but in such an elegant form of beauty. 9/10

In second place was the song that the Wiwi Jury liked the most: Italy‘s Francesco Gabbani with “Occidentali’s karma”. Readers rated it an average of 8.89, slightly lower than the Wiwi Jury score of 8.96.

Wiwi reader Pablo was a fan of the song, and said this:

I literally can’t listen to this song without smiling. Smart and sometimes even goofy, yet showing a restraint and a level of world-class talent unparalleled, there is heavy thought behind its gimmicks, instead of being there to dumb down, so in a way making each little detail instantly iconic. It may not be the best voice or presentation, but the whole package kills every flaw. 10/10

In third place was Azerbaijan‘s entry, Dihaj with “Skeletons”. Wiwibloggs readers gave it 8.18, much higher than the Wiwi Jury’a score of 7.83.

Reader Purple Mask has this observation to make about the song:

This song stands out, in a very good way. […] Is the meaning of the song over most people’s heads? Maybe. But personally I don’t care. There is daring music here, and it works brilliantly in the video. My only slight concern is how this will work live on stage, although I can’t wait to find out! 9/10.

Wiwi readers also gave higher average scores to the UK, Norway and Poland, while Denmark was the only country to get exactly the same score from both wiwibloggs readers and the Wiwi Jury.

At the other end, Lithuania was the least favourite song with Wiwi readers. But readers awarded it a mere 1.94, while the Wiwi Jury was slightly more generous on 3.31.

Aww!!! That is such an honor, guys! Thank you so much for considering our reviews and our marks. I wasn’t expecting this at all… awesome! Ooops… To all Salvador’s fans (me included) *cough cough* I forgot to mark the song… it would be 10/10, just for the record…. hehe

Wow damn! Didn’t expect this! This is surely an unique take on the usual jury, and thank you so much for featuring my humble opinions, I was shocked! I did intend from this year on out to really write my opinions down and have my own small reviews up. While some have changed since I commented for better or worse, it’s all largely the same. This made my day for sure! For anyone interested, I compiled and cleaned my reviews, and you may see them here. Any comments you may have feel free to contact me where it says on… Read more »

I love, love, love this idea!!

When I gave my scores, I just wanted to be in your position for just a moment! I wanted to see how I could evaluate a song and give a score, being as objective as I could! I just wanted to share my opinion!

I didn’t know you would make such an article and actually a “wiwi readers jury”!
This should be a tradition! I hope you’ll make it again next year, and again, and again…

A big thank you for the hard work!

It`s great to see that Iceland, Macedonia and Azerbaidjan are doing so well in the Readers Vote, as I was a bit shocked when William & Deban didn`t see them in their prediction for the final. As I´m from Germany I can only vote in SF 2, but if you beloved honeys here are living in a country that can vote in SF 1 and you also like Svala`s and Dihaj`s Songs then PLEASE vote for them and help them to get to the grand final. <3 And I will do my very best on Thursday for Macedonia!!! 🙂 Greetings… Read more »

I love this idea and that I ended up being a part of it! I always wanted to be a part of the jury, so in a way I was this year. 🙂
Must have been a lot of work to determine which scores to take into account, though. Thanks, Robyn!

Thank you so much for taking my reviews into consideration! I missed some countries because I was out of home, but I’m glad you think about the readers even if my reviews weren’t very tecnhical or professional.

About the results I agree with almost every country in the top 5.

2. F.Y.R. Macedonia

4. Bulgaria
5. Norway

Aw thanks for the shutout, Wiwi! 🙂

Regardless of what everyone thinks (readers and staff), the next two weeks are going to be a fun time here. Too bad I’ll be on a mini vacation during the semis but I’ll be back for the Final!

I did not know Blanche is just 17. She has a long way to go. I would like to see some emotions on her face while she sings. But her latest live was good enough. Maybe, she will be able to take victory with professional team and improve her vocals by working hard.
Portugal is too low. (no way)

Wow, wiwibloggs never seems to stop taking the eurovision passion to the next level! You put a lot of hard work on this blog, which I have been reading since 2012 and though and in these years wiwibloggs has flown to the number 1 eurovision site. Congratulations to all the hard workers!

I think there’s a feeling that because the song is so good that we want her to do well. We want this so much that some of us are overlooking her weaker live performances.

It depends on how the averages were calculated. It could be mean (average), median or some other averaging system; anyone at Wiwi care to explain?

Thank you to Wiwibloggs and all other readers for a fantastic 2017 preview season.

Apologies that my “wildcard” score for Portugal may have badly affected its average here – realistically it could land anywhere from a 4 to a 9; it really does depend on how Salvador interprets the song on the night.

I like the Belgian entry, on a radio playlist or music video, I just don’t think it lends itself well to live music TV entertainment.
It’s a little boring live which I don’t think will translate into a high Eurovision score, when most viewers will hear it for the first, and probably last, time.

This isn’t a representative sample as people would likely only post a ranking if they loved or hated a song, and if they thought anyone cared.

A piece of art is never mediocre. And looking at the responses on Blanche’s and Francesco’s songs, they’re both just that. You know it’s something special when it’s brought down and hated!

Good luck to everyone. May the best one win!

I love seeing Blanche on top:-) She has such a cool, modern song… It is great to see the new generation of Eurovision stars–multi-lingual, multi-cultural, so talented and so young! Please note, two of the top five here are 17 y.o…. This new generation is so inspiring:-)

Azerbaijan entry is truly contemporary contender this year. Belgium entry is leaving me cold because I can’t feel anything, it’s just a wise women singing like she woke up from her sleep half asleep, ofcourse it’s not her fault it’s the song just like that. As for italy, I honestly don’t know how this can be favourite, it’s the song trying to immitate eastern culture by making fun of it to create westerners karma , HORRIBLE, imagine this win the Europe must be crazy who, lost their minds. I respect Italian participation and I was happy when they returned but… Read more »

Did you even bother reading the lyrics of the song? It’s the exact opposite of what you are saying and, to to tell the truth, the song talks exactly about people like you who talk about stuff without knowing anything about it. It is about westernes’ appropriation of eastern cultures resulting in the loss of their profound meaning just to follow a trend.

@Quintiliano: I think many of the Eastern countries may miss the point of Occidentali’s karma. The further east you go, the more wide-spread and understood are the eastern religions. Also, people there face different and more difficult lives–wars, uncertainty, political issues. Clever lyric even in English are likely to be lost on them, and in Italian–I say just forget it. Also clever terms like internetology…. do you really think they will connect to that, lol? Occidentali’s karma is a western song. I am so curious to see how it will do with the East. One good think about Eurovision is… Read more »
