Malta, San Marino and Estonia: Eurovision 2021 Second Rehearsals
Photos: EBU / THOMAS HANNES / ANDRES PUTTING

Day six of Eurovision 2021 rehearsals starts right now! First up to the Rotterdam Ahoy stage today is semi-final one show closer Malta, followed by semi-final two contestants San Marino and Estonia. Will anybody make changes to their staging plans? Let’s take a look…

Second rehearsals at Eurovision 2021: Malta, San Marino and Estonia

Malta’s Destiny “Je Me Casse” — Eurovision 2021 second rehearsal

Oliver: What a way to kick off today’s rehearsals. Even at 10:00 AM, Destiny’s vocal is superb. The Maltese star is slaying the stage in a new silver dress with huge draping sleeves. She’s still wearing the pink boots — though this time they didn’t fall down — and her dancers remain in their original pink outfits. It’s an interesting styling choice to say the least, but it maintains the visual connection between all the performers on stage while simultaneously drawing the eye to Destiny as the star of the show. As if it was ever questioned, Malta is in it to win it.

Padraig: Costume change! Pink is out, silver is in. The new outfit is a similar cut to the previous one, although it does make Destiny pop more against both the pink LED and her dancers, who remain pink. The boots are unchanged though, which makes for an odd clash against the new dress. Camera cuts have been tightened. For instance, when Destiny descends the stairs, we’re shown a cutaway of her dancers instead of seeing Destiny walk tentatively down the steps. Additionally, the lighting has been adjusted so that we go from darkness to light just as Destiny sings “excuse my French”. It’s a moment! Overall, it’s a much more confident run-through than earlier in the week.

San Marino’s Senhit “Adrenalina” — Eurovision 2021 second rehearsal

Oliver: Take two, still no Flo Rida. However, Senhit’s gold headpiece now features pictures of the Floridian rapper, replacing the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus images. This is presumably to keep in line with the Eurovision rules surrounding religious symbolism, but it adds a nice touch of humour and keeps the tease game strong. Will he make it to Rotterdam in time for next Thursday’s semi-final? Only time will tell. Otherwise, not much has changed. Another good run from the underdogs!

A post shared by wiwibloggs (@wiwibloggs)

Padraig: No sightings of Flo Rida again today. However, all the signs are indicating that he’ll appear. Firstly, Senhit’s ornate headpiece is covered in stickers with his face while later she shouts “hello, Rotterdam! Are you ready to feel Flo Rida with me?”. So, unless Senhit is trolling us harder than Silvia Night, expect to see Flo next Thursday. Otherwise, the performance is pretty much the same as before. Senhit is enjoying herself no end. Her positive energy is infectious, making for a great semi-final opener.

Estonia’s Uku Suviste “The Lucky One” — Eurovision 2021 second rehearsal

Oliver: Better vocal agility from the Estonian star today. Uku Suviste is straining less when hitting the chorus notes, although there’s still work to be done in getting those phrases completely smooth. His shirt is also unbuttoned further down his chest to expose more skin. Perhaps he’s appealing for votes via the audience gaze. Beyond that, there are no other changes and the stage show still feels underwhelming coming right after San Marino’s adrenaline rush.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by wiwibloggs (@wiwibloggs)

Padraig: Any changes today are negligible. It’s pretty much the same performance as the first rehearsal, which itself was quite similar to Eesti Laul. Uku has stage presence and strong vocals, but this is a real energy sapper compared to San Marino just before and Czech Republic and Greece afterwards. Sometimes a running order like this can help a slower song stand out. Here though, it just seems like a party pooper in the middle of all the bops.

It’s absolutely ridiculous how critical everyone is towards Malta – c’mon it’s not all about the boots or whatever. Meanwhile, Italy and France get limitless praise no matter what they do on stage.

Such a wonderful improvement of Malta – Destiny gets to shine now. San Marino still excellent.

I think neither France nor Malta will win. Switzerland is too similar to last year’s Winner. I believe there will be a “surprise” winner. Bulgaria or Italy for example

I think that this is Eurovision SONG Contest not Eurovision Clothes Contest so I don’t get why most of you are all commenting on the clothes rather than the actual rehearsal and performance. Afterall it’s a show and artists should wear something which makes them shine from one another. Keep the Eurovision spirit alive with some positive vibes because it’s tiring seeing negative comments each day.

Malta: This dress is better and attenuates the excess of pink, but doesn’t go with the boots. I would say go full silver then. But putting the “dressgate” aside, I don’t know if they keep showing us just the uninteresting parts, but I feel very cold watching it.

San Marino: The colors in the LED were actually brighter than in the pics, which is good. I still miss a connection between all the visual elements though.

Estonia: Too many wide shots for an entry with just one person on stage.

Let me inform you for something that I noticed today.. Malta’s 2nd rehearsal video was upload to the official channel like 4 hours ago…ten minutes later I was there and checking the views from all the participants. Malta had 86.000+ with 6.8k likes and 2.2k dislikes. Then I refresh the page and she went to 112.000 views with the same amount of likes and dislikes, and now she gained another 11k views =123K with exactly 6.8k likes and 2.2k dislikes… that’s suspicious, that’s cheating. I love so much Destiny and I like her song so much that I’m voting for… Read more »

There have been rumours (maybe untrue, I have no idea) about Malta bribing juries in the past, so who knows…

Actually the opposite…
And it was heard also for latvia, slovakia and Czech republic.
And the buyer was Azerbaijan…

Here we go. Another one spreading conspiracy theories. The only case of jury buying was done years ago by Azerbaijan, in fact it was the year they won the ESC.

So? Does that prove that Malta is buying votes? If anything it is selling them! And btw that was totally disproved because the maximum points given to Azerbaijan by Malta came from the televote and with good reason as the Azeris gave a number of shows in Malta and had a massive advertising campaign. I don’t think the Azeri government paid the Maltese population to vote for its contestants.

And here we go again. All the hate towards Destiny in the WIWI comments are something that really disgust me. Just say that you have other favourite countries and full stop. And that you re worried that your favourite country dies not stand a chance next to Destiny. Why be so vindictive in your comments article after article.

Should be pretty obvious FloRida isn’t going to be there by now. If he wasn’t obliged to actually participate, he shouldn’t be part of the song to begin with

Berco

Baby, those boots are not a maybe, they are definitely a NO. Now the costumes look odd and incoherent.
For Senhit, I actually admire her, love her energy and how she trolls us each time. But, if there is no Flo Rida, her votes will be fired with gasoline.
I actually see an improvement in Estonia but, is it adequate? Not in that running order, sorry.

Samo

Presence of Flo Rida will have an almost zero impact on Senhit’s performance. The song is a bop and will do well with or without him. I don’t think he adds any substantial value to the song or the performance. In fact, I think overfocusing on him might cost San Marino some votes.

Literally everyone is disliking Malta’s performance (not talking about vocals), and Wiwi is praising it. They have thing for Destiny and that’s okay, but when you’re reporting you should put that aside and be objective.

So an unpopular opinion… I am seeing all this wide plans from the acts. Too much purple color, too much neon, too much saturation for the eye.
And somehow Estonia in between everything has a dynamic song with a different color pallet, and a bit more calm staging and a background friendlier to the eye. You can distinct it easily from the other acts.
I think a factor than can achieve an easy qualification to the final…

In Estonia’s act you can say that everything is happening in the screen behind…
In many of the other acts they are trying to create 3d illusion etc…
On the eye that is maybe more amazing, but not that friendly…

Malta – Sorry, I am just not feeling it – but if pressure has forced her to change her outfit, that is completely unacceptable.

San Marino – quite chaotic, it seems strange for me to be saying it, but they could do with playing it a bit more safe

Estonia – love the classicism in this

In my opinion Destiny and this song just do not go together. Its like asking Maneskin to sing Vasil, its just wrong. The genre of music is wrong for her and the clothes styling is also wrong. But then again she said she wanted to sing it to show off her more fun side so if shes happy then who are we to argue. If it wins for me it will be one of the best female vocalists winning with one of the worst songs.

Malta: Her voice is outstanding, but what I’ve seen from the performance, the staging is not. It just feels weird. I would prefer Destiny to be away from the dancers, because their energy doesn’t match right now and I think it would highlight her vocals more. For me, this does not feel like the winner atm and I might even add there are better pop dance performances in semi 1. San Marino: Not my kind of quirky staging, but I do believe San Marino did a great job with this one. It will definately stand out and be a moment… Read more »

Malta still have that boring 5 girls standing in a straight line which is a stage no no in the business. It always comes across as visually boring whoever does this. . The dress is a slight improvement but does not complement her figure. Nothing wrong with big girls. more power to them, but please note that short bigger people do not suit short clothes. The boots still look tacky and pink against a pink background (or same costume colour as the background) is another no no in the biz. Memorable staging from Malta include Taboo and Chameleion. I know Destiny needs to sell an empowering message, but girl, there is no need to lie. She could just say “we’re going to test new dresses, I feel comfortable with the pink one but it’s fine” and that would be perfect, but she gave us a message that feels fake now.

So you think she is wearing dresses which make her feel uncomfortable? They surely have different dresses to see which one works best with the lightning etc. as has happened in previous entries!!! She couldn’t test all her dresses in the first rehearsal right?, and possibly this will not be the final one! I have to say that I don’t get the point of rehearsals after all these comments, best would be to not show or post any rehearsals at all if contestants are going to be butchered in case of any changes! destiny did MUCH better this round than her first rehearsal. she’s back at #1 in the odds. but honestly, i don’t know if i’m the only one feeling this too but sacha jean baptiste really did destiny dirty. she made this entire performance rely on lighting and backing dancers rather than making it about DESTINY… i think the message of the song gets totally lost by the fact that destiny is surrounded by 4 tall, conventionally attractive, swedish dancers when the song is about empowerment, specifically destiny’s empowerment. i think if they had gone with something similar to what bilal… Read more »

I have to be honest, Malta gave us two fantastic music videos that accentuated her own style. Which is why I’m not really getting these pink pop diva vibes they’re trying to push with her. It’s doesn’t feel like Destiny’s style. She’s more classy, unique and fierce than that. I feel like everyone needs to give her a break though, I don’t think she would agree with this staging if she wouldn’t like it, maybe she wanted to try out a new style. Let’s focus on the fantastic vocals instead of moaning about the outfit.

Destiny has very little input into what the overall package is, she’s just the voice and the face of the Maltese delegation.
But it’s painfully obvious how little this is actually hers per say.
Which is quite sad to see people who should know better, and have her best interests at heart.

San Marino’s staging looks rather messy if you’d ask me. I’ve never been a fan of those thirsty wigs and her outfit and shoes look rather amateur. Not to mention those scary clown costumes of the dancers that are not even in sync with the stage’s colors and the religious prop at the beginning. It’s a little all over the place. The turning platform she brought from the music video is the only thing about this that’s exciting and of course the song itself.
