Three acts qualified for the grand final of Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix 2024 last Saturday, and tonight we found out who will join these acts in Trondheim.
18 acts are battling it out to become Norway’s next Eurovision entry, and six of them competed in tonight’s semi-final 2 for three golden tickets to the grand final on 3 February.
And just as last Saturday, it were the three songs performing last in the semi-final, that got the coveted golden tickets.
Qualifiers from MGP semi-final 2
- Farida – “Heartache” (out)
- MILEO – “You´re Mine” (out)
- Eli Kristin – “Touch Of Venus” (out)
- Super Rob & Erika Norwich – “My AI” (qualified)
- Dag Erik Oksvold and Anne Fagermo – “Judge Tenderly of Me” (qualified)
- Gåte – “Ulveham” (qualified)
Did your favourites qualify? Were you surprised by the result? Let us know in the comments below.
Proof Erika Norwich can Sing: https://youtu.be/VRuBdsiljwM
She has a beautiful voice but I think she was too nervous. I think this is her first upbeat song. She needs to rehearse a lot more and perhaps to have a shot of alcohol before going on stage.
Apart from Oblivion which is great, no qualification this year from Norway so far. This last semi-final was not good at all. My AI is definitely a non-qualifier. Robots and Eurovision do not well work together, we have seen this several times at Eurovision.
I’m sorry but children and families will vote for it at Eurovision.
Meanwhile NRK has just revealed the running order of the Third Semi-Final of this year’s MGP!
Vidar Villa – “MER”
MISTRA – “Waltz of Death”
Thomas Jenssen – “Take Me To Heaven”
Annprincess – “Save Me”
MiiA – “Green Lights”
KEiiNO – “Damdiggida»
Once I again I think the tradition will continue and the last three of the running order will qualify 🙂
Looks like that. I’m intrested to see Mistra the most, looks promicing .
Ulveham isn’t as immediate of a song as My AI. At least with My AI you either LOVE it or HATE it, a marmite effect that often works well at Eurovision.
Ulveham’s performance is very immediate though. Like it has this WOW effect that’s so difficult to create. My AI’s performance is mid at best.
It wasn’t for me. It seemed like the lead singer was just screaming and the audio levels compared to her voice and the rest of the music were unbalanced. I also fear they lack the ability to tell the song properly, whereas with My AI it’s spelt out for you so even the TikTok generation will understand it. So from that angle, Ulveham’s live performance was more mid. But for me i find that the worse or cringy a song is the more people remember them at Eurovision.
My AI is #27 on Spotify Norway today.
Ulveham is #97.
I’m scared …
Gate fans should be shacking in their boots at the MIGHT of Super Rob!
Erika is doing Blanka now that’s why.
She said she is wondering to withdraw from MGP because of haters who are basically been written that the sang bad and the song is s joke wich is true.
And ofc now she gets a lot of support.
Blanka 2.0
She sang bad *
She’s already better than Blanka and if you go back to her song in 2020 for MGP, she can DEFINITELY sing. The problem is the robotic backing vocals and the fact that the other acts are all using Autotune but she is not!
She’s definately better than Blanka. And her Robot is way way cooler than those vulgar dancers …
#19 now.
And Gåte nowhere to be seen…
Not going to like, was not really fond of Ulveham with the studio version. However, the live version brought it to life and made me love it. It went from being a 4/10 to an 8.5/10 (with potential to grow even higher).
Not going to lie*
Props to the designer/s and maker/s of the robot suit, wowza all around!
Gåte could win Eurovision. It’s ethereal.
More like borderline qualifier or NQ. Song is so inaccessible for the ordinary viewer to have mass appeal to win.
Gåte are first in the odds right now. I think the momentum is on their side after last night’s amazing performance. My AI has (rightfully) fallen in the odds a lot. The only threat for Gåte right now seem to be Keiino so we have to wait until their performance as well to make accurate predictions. But there’s a high possibility Gåte will win in Trondheim. P. S. I really wonder though what will the juries support. I don’t see them supporting My AI, Damdiggida or We Come Alive. Will Gåte be their thing? Or will Margaret win the jury… Read more »
Gåte are quite popular in Norway so it’s not really a surprise that they climbed to first place after an outstanding performance yesterday. They do have the momentum and given their popularity I think they are certainly the favourites right now to win the televoting in the final. I have no idea what the juries will vote for – “Oblivion” is the most jury-friendly song but their votes can go anywhere and I feel that Anne & Dag Erik might be a dark horse there. I don’t think that Keiino’s song is particularly jury-friendly since none of their previous entries… Read more »
Yes Anne & Dag Erik will most probably win many jury points and I don’t mind since it’s a great song and performance as well. They also seem to be popular in Norway. I think it will be a tough final with many songs possibly aiming for the top. Gåte seem to be the hot favourite right now though!
I thought the dup would be dull, but the live performance was actually good. Maybe it’s just a better song performing live
They were really pleasant. They had a Common Linnets kind of magic and the song has a nice melody
Not gonna lie, i’m not getting Calm After the Storm vibes from them tbh.
The song is very pretty. Both Gåte and Anne&Dag would be great choice for Eurovision in different ways.
OR YOU COULD CHOOSE THE ROBOT AND THE PINK GIRL WHO EVERYONE SAYS CANT SING
I feel Margaret Berger will flop in the final, not good or strong or memorable enough.
I think the international juries will go for Gothminister , Gate and the country song.
Margaret won’t be high in the televote certainly I believe. But the performance and song are polished enough for the jury to like them. And the song is radio-friendly. But yes Gåte will also be high there and that combined with a strong televoting might be enough.
Same with Ingrid. They have very generic songs.
I think Super Rob and Erica, Gate, Gothminster and Keiino will be the top televoting entries.
I dont think Keiino can beat them. It will be between My AI and Ulveham in the final – Erica Norwich can sing, indicated by her 2020 performance but she will need to work on them for the final, which she CAN absolutely do. If Bejba can get round to singing for Eurovision, so can Norwich, who is more of a professional singer than Blanka. They can also polish the staging. With Gate, they have peaked, meaning you cant really make it better.
Honestly for me the vocals for My AI are the least of my problems with this song xD. But yes they have a shot at winning.
I’d be happy with either Gåte or Gothminister going to Malmö
It’s Gothminster for me.
In Norway MGP is a Party Competition, so I doubt Gåte will win.
As a Norwegian I know what we love, people will go crazy for the robot.
Most Norwegians doesn’t watch the Semi-finals, but they tune in for the finals.
Semi-final 1 was seen by 500k-ish people.
The final last year was seen by 1.1 Million people.
So, everything can change in the final.
Sending the robot would be such a bad move from Norway when you have Gåte in the race…
Gate’s song lacks the impact for Eurovision. Everyone loves it but wont vote for it. At Eurovision, ‘the marmite effect’ is what leads to entries like Cha Cha Cha, Give That Wolf a Banana and the Russian Grannies from 2012 doing well. Many people dislike or even hate the song but cannot mark it down because you cannot give minus points. This then benefits the lovers and as a result they turn out more passionately to support their act and then that acts ends up doing well with the televote as a result, so My AI might be the choice… Read more »
I’m quite sure Norway will pick Gåte. Yes, much focus has been on MPG as a music-party but remember that Norwgians also have chose nmany slower songs the last ten years: «Fallen Angel» (2021), «Attention (2020), «A Monster Like Me» (2015) and «Silent Storm (2014).
But then they chose Give That Wolf A Banana in 2022!
I expect that many of those ‘party votes’ will split among Keiino and Super Rob in the final, and you also have a jury that I won’t be surprised if it places “My AI” in the very last place. Gåte is the one to beat.
I think more people will vote Super Rob than the trio because it’s more colourful, pink, appeals to the younger voters and has a clear story shown on the stage.
I’m disappointed that Mileo missed out. Okay, I do have doubts about the staging. I gave the lyrics a pass because I thought of them as ridiculing possessiveness in a relationship, and as a lesson to get out as fast as you can if it is something you are experiencing. Plus it was unusual and had character.
It’s a psychotic, villain song, which is how I view it.
Hyper-real, cartoonish… like the Arkham Asylum. If I thought it was actually mocking of psychiatric patients in any way I would not be a fan.
My only problem was the way it portrayed healthcare workers. HOWEVER, I got heavy Joker 2019 vibes from him.
Now i’m scared Norway won’t pick Gåte for Malmö
While I kinda enjoy the studio version of My AI, I wonder how the vocals would sound without autotune in case it won MGP, and they were to sing it at Eurovision.
My non-Eurovision friends with whom we watched together immediately said “Oh it’s like the Barbie girl song by Aqua!”. Soit’s relatable and memorable.
In total though, the live performance seemed a bit trashy. I did not like the role or attitude of the girl. Plus all this autotune / robotic lyrics, too much perhaps.
Let’s see how the Norwegians will vote!
Erica didnt use autotune though. That’s why she sounded bad compared to Gate, who did.
Erica Norwich said she used ZERO autotune vocals. The only robotic effects were the playback ones used for Super Rob which is part of the song like the ‘Yum Yum’ effect from Give that Wolf a Banana.
Ironically, Judge Tenderly on me had more autotune than My AI. I’m a little sad that the general public doesn’t recognize artificial from true live vocals anymore.
Also very sad for Mileo, he had a great performance, a great fit, presence, and a good sense of black humor. If there is a wild card, I hope he gets a second chance.
Congrats to Gåte, they were leagues above the rest tonight! <3
It’s funny isn’t it? The actual robot song had more personality and character and ‘natural’ effects put in! And people aren’t realising this but that was 100% all Erica’s vocals for her parts whereas Gate sounded false.
Has anybody else noticed how the staging of ‘my AI’ is heavily influenced by Japanese artist Kyary pamyu pamyu and her music video of the song ‘invader invader’?
https://youtu.be/jcIOg_m-bp4?si=axn2NrwFXce6Le90
Man I wish Japan participated Eurovision. I desperately need Denpa music and Shamisen music on Eurovision.
I would bet Eurovision fans would like a band like WagakkiBand. They are kind of like “What if you combine Go_A and Nightwish and they play a unique banjo-like instrument with a guitar pick that looks like a paint scraper (= Shamisen).”
shame the AI song qualified, would’ve preferred Eli Kristin instead of that thing
It could surprisingly be between Gåte and the duo in the end
So far the best acts in the final.
Which duo lol
Has anyone noticed it is always the last 3 songs in the running order that qualify?
Same. Makes you wonder if the same thing will happen next week with the last semi final
If that means Damdiggida is eliminated, then I definitely wouldn’t mind
Well, KEiiNO will perform last in SF3, so they will probably follow the same pattern 🙂
Judge Tenderly Of Me was a nice surprise. Deserved the qualification.
My Ai….is just not it. Ulveham, on the otherhand, gives me Oslo 2025 vibes.
On the other hand, I get Oslo 2025 vibes from My AI lol. For me it’s the right song. Gate have better vocals but used autotune whereas Erica Norwich definitely didn’t.
Gåte Isn’t Only Winning MGP, But The Entire Eurovision This Year. Mark My Words.
Jury would not let that song win Eurovision no matter how well it was executed. If EBU reduces the power of jury we might have that conversation. Jury doesn’t appreciate these things.
Nah, Jury Votes For Quality And This Is Quality. This Is What Loreen Should Have Done Last Year. Will Be The Best Winner This Millenium By Far When It Wins
Since when does the jury vote for quality?
Gåte will be nothing more than just another hyped fan favorite. Mark My Words.
obviously, norway never sends songs in norwegian so
You really are a very toxic person. In the Checa song you complain that she doesn’t sing in English and here the opposite is true. Yeah! Toxic. Stop toxic people
i’m not toxic, also i have my own song contest to care about, no longer ESC
1000% agree. The ordinary fan cannot sit there and understand in 3 minutes what it is about. Like Give that Wolf a Banana, My AI has the immediate effect to hook you with a STORY. The casual fan wants a story.
I hope so
It doesn’t have the immediate effect that My AI has on the ordinary public.
Stop the competition, Gate just set the bar to a level that literally is unreachable. To create something that has such an impact, is so mesmerising, visually stunning and melodically sounds angelic, we have our first potential Eurovision winner in my opinion.
I can’t see the casual fan at Eurovision voting for them though.
Gate if selected will go the same route as Spain 2023. I understand the need to reflect traditional music relevant to a nations culture but this again is a screaming woman at best impersonating Bjork which will do Norway no good when the points are given. It opens similar to Secret Garden 1995 Nocturne for 10 seconds and that is were the similarity ends but this is no Nocturne that was pure magic. Super Rob also did nothing for me but Dag Erik has a good song well perform but i don’t see this as a winner either but if… Read more »
Who hurt you? Take a deep breath and relax. Gåte will do great in Eurovision. Jury, not so much. Televote, YES!
So you’re telling me they wont win then? The others are saying they will win period but I doubt that. And the televoters wont appreciate it as much as you guys do. This is a bubble! The casual fan isn’t represented.
Or maybe it will be the same route as Ukraine 2021
Agreed.
Wow, I really liked My AI, but that was a disaster. She seemed really akward, trying hard, and the voice was a disaster, considering how she was hiding behind auto tune and backing vocals. A huge mistake if she is chosen, the big Eurovision stage will swallow her.
It wasn’t a disaster. She can improve her vocals and she isn’t using autotune, whereas other acts like Gate WERE.
Gåte were incredible, please please please Norway send them.
Absolutely !
Tbh I wouldn’t hate to see Anne & Dag at Eurovision, that could be the moment.
I guess in the end they will probably pick KEiiNO or Super Rob for Malmö. These two entries are as Norwegian as Norwegian can be.
Gåte and the country duo are very popular…
Or Gothminster…
Anne and Dag are best by far
Don’t get the hype for Gate. It’s different but so repetitive and the vocals need some work for sure.
Me too
[tried to post before but this did not appear online] Dare I say it…the country song, ‘Judge tenderly of me’, could be this year’s KEiiNO-killer…I could so see it winning MGP and going top 5 at ESC. It reminds me of NED2014 The Common Linnets. Yes it’s a simple song but the camera shots and chemistry between the singers is heartfelt and a delight to watch. The contrast between their voices adds a layer of more interest. In this time of so much bad news this simple wistful song for good vibes could be just what Europe wants and needs… Read more »
I see the final fight between Gåte and KEiiNO. Whichever one of them win, I’m happy!
Back to Gåte, the woman in the band has an absolutely GORGEOUS and POWERFUL voice. ??????
I think some more pre/recorded backing vocals would help My AI and then Erica can focus purely on the characterization, which is coming across really well.
Gate was epic, loved the darkness.
Mileo had a great idea for a song. The staging leaves me feeling really uncomfortable though – I’m not sure what he was going for with the nurses? I found it unsettling and crossing a line in terms of appropriateness, so I wish he’d thought that through a little more.
I think Rob&Erika already used A LOT of prerecorded vocals tbh…
Agreed, I think they need more – the song lends itself to the use of artificial sounds – I think they could ramp it up even more and it would be more effective
I think what he was going for is that his character is insane and locked in an asylum.
That was my thinking as well and it made me feel really uncomfortable.
If that’s the aim Melio was going for, then he succeeded, but MGP may not have been the right venue for it. Perhaps that was his downfall.
Anne and Dag, Margaret Berger, Gåte, Keiino, there are two many good ones to choose from this year. Norway, you are making this far too hard for us viewers ??
My AI…live…dreadful.
Farida robbed
Gåte just proved they can gove Go_A-realness to Eurovision for Norway this year ?
Dare I say it…the country song, ‘Judge tenderly of me’, could be this year’s KEiiNO-killer…I could so see it winning MGP and going top 5 at ESC. It reminds me of NED2014 The Common Linnets. Yes it’s a simple song but the camera shots and chemistry between the singers is heartfelt and a delight to watch. The contrast between their voices adds a layer of more interest. OMG Gåte slayed tonight! Their performance was mesmerizing and flawless! I’m sure they’re this year’s MGP winners now!
I’m also glad that Judge Tenderly of Me made it through! 😀
Ok Norway I didn’t see that coming, Gåte was not even on my radar based on the studio track, but I must say in live it comes alive, it was perfect, it has everything, the epicness, the power, the mix of genres perfectly done, the vocals, the lighting, the camera work, everything on point, it’s very ready. Again the proof that you really need to see a song live with everything around to get the real potential of it for Eurovision, and with this Norway has its esc top 5 for the 2nd year in a row in the pocket… Read more »
Agree 100%, I can see doing it very Well at Eurovision 🙂
For sure it has everything for, I can see even a top 5 with this performance but Eurovision is so unpredictable in fact…
They’re now using the jury/televote system with the scoreboard now, so no superfinals and golden duels anymore, sadly…
Ah ok ty for the info
Gåte stole the show. Amazing. Could get another Top 5 result for Norway. PLEASE let this win!!!
This semi was so much better than the first one.
Gate was the clear best for me tonight, My AI was really disappointing i hope they can step it up in the final
SHOCKED Mileo didn’t qualify. Why the country song? Bit odd since Mileo slayed the live vocals and gave us intruiging staging. Farida was okay apart from her clothing.
They are big in Norway!
Mileo’s song seemed to make entertainment out of a very serious issue for a lot of people. Even though it is fiction, it was distasteful to many viewers.
So you never watch action movies or horror movies then? Movies where killing is main centered are up for Oscars and Golden Globes every year…it is art, not reality!!! Get over it!
I just don’t understand what message Mileo was going for? What entertainment was he trying to provide with that staging? Action / horror feels are very obviously not about actually what you seen on screen – they are normally about family, masculinity, friendships, deviousness, etc – there is often a moral message – I just dont understand what Mileo’s message is?
I reckon he based his staging off of the Dark Knight and Joker 2019’s Joker character.
Could agree with you more Purple Mask. I don’t know what Mileo was going for but it came across like he was trying to depict some kind of mental health facility, and it crossed a line for me in terms of appropriateness.
Yeah I can understand why especially healthcare workers would grow distasteful of Mileo.
Imo, this is not the sort of thing to be making entertainment about, I found it quite distasteful.
There is a big discussion whether this should have been allowed in the contest this year. We’re only in january, but already there are so many women having been killed by their ex partner this year. It’s the line that goes “where’s my girlfriend? I buried her, is that okay?” then goes on to say “well, she’s dead, but who cares anyway?” that have sparked some controversy. Some people feel like it is inappropriate regarding the recent murders ????? I see no issues in the song, but some do.
SZA’s Kill Bill has 1 BILLION plays on Spotify, and has been on VG-Lista for 12 consecutive weeks.
She sings: “I just killed my ex”
But as long as it’s a woman doing it, it’s apparently okay.
VG should be reported for Unethical Press Etiquette.
Publishing slander articles same day as the heat.
What a garbage news organization 😀
I think he could do better if he spoke Norwegian in the interviews, honestly. A lot of artists get massive support from their home towns. Mileo, despite being half Norwegian and having spent a lot of his upbringing in Oslo, choosing to only speak English, makes him feel foreign. We want a Norwegian to represent Norway. Alessandra was also half Norwegian, and grew up in Italia, but she was fluent in Norwegian, allthough with a charming Italian accent.
I’m so happy for Anne and Dag! I voted for them and they managed to beat the odds from the dead last place. Absolutely deserved spot in the final!
Was more a fan of Heartache and you’re mine. Really hope Gate doesnt win, and couldnt care less about the country song. Still rooting for Keiino
You will be in minority!
Judge Tenderly of Me going through is amazing. The classiest out of all performances tonight. It deserves a spot in the final.
I don’t understand the hate for Robot song… it’s good, it’s catchy and it definitely grabs attention. The only song I have on my playlist. Mind you – not everyone has to sing like Beyonce, come on, we had many entries we loved but could not sing for dear life such as Ivi Adamou, everyone was humming La La La Love.
Me too! I love the song but Erica needs to polish her vocals A LITTLE. Love her attitude and the story though.
I wasn’t humming lalalove. Still terrible. Only yeah yeah fire convinced me.
In my dreams:
– Margaret gets the jury vote
– Keiino and My Ai get the televote
– Gåte has enough points in both to snatch the victory
in my dream, the televote doesn’t have the worst possible taste. Dare to dream!
My AI in the final sees Erica polish her vocals and better staging leading to the juries giving it a bit more points but then it EASILY LANDSLIDES the televote.
Gåte is winning the public vote in Norway for sure! You have no idea how big they are here obviously. And they have a great song as well!!!
I like it but something is missing. And live it appeared like there was a bit of screaming. Norway does it best in my opinion when their song tells a story.
Wow, I was not expecting that result! Congratulations to Gåte, Super Rob & Erika and to Dag Erik & Anne. See you in the final. 🙂
Semi 3 !
(I’m booked to sing next weekend, so my commentary on Semi 3 might not be possible. It depends on timings.)
Wait…Judge Tenderly of Me got through?! What?! These results are strange!
*Insert wailing baby Erica here!
Norwegians are crazy for country, it was quite predictable.
I thought Mileo was gonna qualify! Super Rob, help me, waaaaaaa!!!
Mileo, boy, too much witch-hunting has been worked against you …
Could replace My Al if you ask me… art against fast(food) music but but…
The country song.
The country song was not bad but my Al …
The country song was a snoozefest. My AI? I’d rather be in a car crash than a train that lasts forever.
