This week we’re in Benidorm for Spain’s Eurovision national selection. Semi-final 2 took place on Thursday night, with another eight acts competing for a spot in the Benidorm Fest 2024 final. Our eyes are still burning from all that fire!

I know how to solve this issue: st. Pedro or Jorge. Spain could send st. Pedro singing and Jorge and his dancers dancing in the background instead of those boring ladies. Preferably in boxers only. That’s the receipt for success in may

Meh, I’m not fond of any acts this year.

I think St. Pedro has the most potential to do well in Malmo, but only if he fixes his staging to replicate his music video. Sophia Coll has a great song too, but she needs to drastically improve her vocals, staging and choreo before Malmo.

Something is seriously wrong with the voting system. Jorge won both the demoscopic and Televote with 40 points each. That adds up to 80 and is supposed to be 50% of the vote. If the Jury are supposedly the other 50%, why was their winner given 94 points?! It’s more like the jury have 60% swing on the overall vote!

The jury awards 432 points in total: each juror hands out 2-4-5-6-7-8-10-12 points = 54 points in total. Eight jurors x 54 points = 432. Demoscopic vote and televote each hand out 216 points: 16-20-22-25-28-30-35-40. Total that’s 216 points. So yes it does add up that jury gives 50% and public vote totals 50% too, but indeed the breakdown in points is a bit weird. I get why they don’t want to translate the percentage of the televote into points, and there are other national finals who work with a set of points (Portugal, Ireland, Serbia to name a few),… Read more »

Why was the televoting and demoscopic votes mostly in multiples of 5? It’s like they’re setting it so that the public can’t decide the winner from the get-go. Regardless of actual figures, I firmly believe Jorge had the best vocals, dancing and live performance, so why was he given THIRD WORST when there was at least Marlena who was worse than him in terms of vocals? Was it because of his song and they weren’t watching the live performance? To me it’s the most obvious case of the jury trying to screw the results so that Spain can’t send something… Read more »

My guess is that they think these numbers are easier? Don’t know really, but I think you might be taking it a bit too far in your theories. Btw Caliente isn’t that Spanish, it’s a latin song as well with a couple of flamenco inspired dance moves. I don’t think it’s that more representative of Spain than SloMo or Dos extraños. Eaea was, however.

I will never understand the selection in with the audience/citizens (who pay to vote and who also pay the country’s ESC participation through taxes) can’t decide their own representative, and a few foreigners (“professionals”) decide everything. Get ready for the final where Jorge will destroy the competition in demo. and tele. but end up being destroyed by the juries, and this time public go for even bigger riot, throwing tomato at jurors haha

And the jury result doesn’t even make sense in terms of points. 94 is their highest score and that’s supposedly 50% of the overall vote but then Jorge won the other two votes totally 80 but that’s not the other 50% overall?!

Who do I want to win? One of the three, Jorge, Angy or St Pedro.

Who will probably win? St Pedro or Nebulossa.

I guess I can already make this prediction about the final result: 8th place: Miss Caffeína; deserved finalist, but it ends there. I think everyone likes this but no one is passionate enough about it. 6th/7th: Almácor and Sofia Coll; both of them hyped by the fandom (Almácor by the Spaniards, Sofia by the foreigners) but not strong enough to really be in contention for the top 4. 4th/5th: Angy and María Peláe: great entries with their own character and good support, just not enough to be in the mix to win. 2nd/3rd: Nebulossa and Jorge González: excellent performances, I… Read more »

Who would have expected than in the same Festival where jury gave the victory to Chanel against the public vote, the public vote supported Caliente against the jury?
So impredictable!
I did not like Valiente but I have to accept that Jorge’s performance was supreme, I don”t understand Marlena getting more jury votes than him.
My favourite last night was St Pedro and it could be that he wins it all. I just hope that he looks more directly and more often to the camera.
Special mention to the specialized press and their dillusional opinion about Almacor’s performance.

The jury of these shows shouldn’t be in the arena but in a peaceful room watching all the performances on TV (as the esc jurors), the rendering on TV is the most important for Eurovision, because honestly on TV Angy was better than Nebulossa and Jorge was largely better than Almacor or Marlena for example.
The jury is a bit biased by the live audience so to be in a separated room would avoid that and would avoid for them to get booed directly in their faces.

So this is what I said on the comments section 1 month ago: I can see Jorge Gonzalez caliente winning because there’s a SloMo vibe to it where you can see it being more of a performance song where you see where the dance beats come in and you know he’s gonna be able to sing live, hit that big note at the end and elevate a basic song. SO MY TAKE IS NOW THIS: Jorge just needs to adjust the feel of the dance so it’s still sexy but less Legendary/DragRace in its vibe and instead more Magic Mike.… Read more »

The part of Caliente potentially winning Benidormfest because of its performance in a Chanel type of way, is what I said back in November when the songs were released. But, back then, I was hated for saying it. I was called delusional and people said I shouldn’t compare Jorge and Chanel.

Now, when the performance actually happened, people are suddenly saying changing their views on his winning chances.

Though, I’d like Pedro to win, Jorge winning Benidormfest is also appreciated.

While I appreciate the message of Zorra and the beauty of Dos Extranos, both are better studio versions than live versions. If either of these semi-final winners win Benidorm Fest and go to ESC, as they are now they’re not going to do well. Angy and Jorge are the two best songs to entertain viewers and to get them to vote for them.

I am sorry, but second semi was possibly even worse than first. Overall, this was on the level of Malta preselection. The sound was off, most performed like amateurs. Last year I enjoyed Benidorm (not the winner tho), but this… I really hope that Angy will win, because she is the only chance for Spain to avoid last place. St. Pedro is toilet break, Nebulossa might have some appeal like Serhat, as a meme. This was very bad. Let’s hope they will get a better sound mix in the final and save the show but I doubt it.

That’s not my point since I don’t particularly like any song from BF this year tbh, but what I’m trying to say is that even when Chanel won the juries she got 51 in jury votes, and Tanxugeiras got 60 in public vote with both publics voting the most for them so it was more “tight” as a difference. This time it really shows the jury’s power.

It’s not about winning, it’s about fairness. The way it’s set up, they’ll just keep seeing the jury shoot down their fave over and over again, never allowed enough votes to make any difference. Seems like an understandable thing to be upset about.

This! But the part that annoys me most is how arbitrary the point allocation is for the demoscopic and public votes: It’s always 16, 20, 22, 25, 28, 30, 35 and 40 points. Not only does that cancel out a major public vote, but the numbers are so random! They increase by 4, then 2, 3, 3, 2, 5 and 5. Why!?

Leendert Jan
Leendert Jan
Reply to  Thin Mint

There is a rationale, that they give half the points of the jury total. The jury has 8 member who give 2-4-5-6-7-8-10-12; so eight times 54 point = 432 points. Both the televote and the demoscopic vote give 216 points. If they would be really fair, the point allocation should be 8-16-20-24-28-32-40-48, but I guess they thought that the gap between the top 3 (8 points) would be too big? Or these numbers too confusing?

Maybe in terms of studio quality. But live Jorge is miles ahead of Almacor. For me, Jorge’s song actually isn’t worse than SloMo (unpopular opinion I know).

Yeah I prefer Caliente as a song rather than Slo Mo.

Exactly. I mean Jorge wasn’t a 10/10, but at least he hit the notes he sang, he danced, and he even slayed the vocals at the ending. He didn’t deserve the full points but he also didn’t deserve 6th place…

His vocals leveled up at the end there!

Of course putting a Dominican and a Venezuelan as jury members would lead to the latin song to be the most voted. I hope the juries are formed by musicians from Spain next year.

I can rest assure you that has more to do with what RTVE must have told the juries to go for instead of latino bias per se. Don’t underestimate our ability to love having a good time lol

You’re been racist…and also the international jury voted for them, and there were a polish, an english and I dont think they used to listen to bolerosss…

Sure, cause the other songs sound very “spanish”

Jorge almost not qualifying cuz of the juries is criminal, he should have won tonight based on that performance. He had the most complete eurovision package. Like did they see the performances? At least the demoscopic vote and the televote had it correct.

The song is not it tho. And that dance break was giving nothing

What did people like in Jorge’s performance ? Personally I found it quite bland, like a cheap and low-cost “Slomo”. I hope for a st.Pedro victory, or Almacor but seeing the results from tonight, he has literally no chance of winning.

He can sing, giving us a high note at the end, starts off with pretty good staging and the song has potential for even greater staging, plus he is charimatic.

I see. Personally, I didn’t feel all of this at all. It reminded me of “Quiero Arder” from Agoney from last year (“Quiero Arder” was better, though), a bland and cheap male dance pop song, and the choreo wasn’t even that good, I thought.

Quiero Arder as a performance yes is more professional but the singer was hated by the Spanish firstly for being too anti-Christian but secondly being full of himself live. Jorge seemed liked a nice fellow and still managed to give a charismatic and fun performance.

That’s right. The song and dance break tho is giving nothing

His looks were definitely the best part. Luckily st.pedro is also fun to look at with a quality song to top it off

Come on now, he delivered the whole package. He danced well, sang well, and had a fully realized staging that worked for the song, and none of the qualifiers had all three (besides maybe Nebulossa but I don’t believe people will give her a fair shot). st. Pedro could get a proper good staging if he goes to Eurovision but inferring he did better than Jorge today is a STRONG statement ngl

Finland 2017, Ireland 2015 and Portugal 2018 are all masterpieces and look at where that got them. I would much rather a country get a good placement with a song I don’t personally like but that is competitive, than seeing them get a terrible position with a great song and give up on Eurovision because the televote doesn’t appreciate what they send

St.Pedro did WAY better than Jorge just song wise

I honestly preferred it as a song to Slo Mo, didn’t objectify women and had great safe dancing with a charismatic singing giving us a great moment at the end. A full package that can only be improved at Eurovision.

I’m happy. The right four went through, even if Jorge did not deserve to top two of the votes. Almácor seems like a very nice guy, I’m happy for him.

Jorge absolutely did. Almacor struggled vocally. Something was off, as much as I love him, his song and personality and LOVE LOVE LOVE the electronic staging, something was missing.

Damn the general public is so basic. Well I was surprised that Almácor is actually not that much of a threat apparently on Saturday and I guess that St Pedro has the best chance to win given the jury will probably go for him. Let’s not forget that Chanel also went to Eurovision thanks to the jury!

Jorge had the full package. He could sing, dance and had a great staging concept with a wow moment at the end. If he polished it a bit more, he could win, but odds are he most likely won’t because of this TERRIBLE 50% jury system and the televoting and demoscopic split up so much!
