Five weeks of heats are behind us and tonight, twelve acts battled it out in the final. Sweden have chosen their artist for Eurovision 2024 with the final of Melodifestivalen 2024 taking place at the Friends Arena in Stockholm on Saturday 9 March.
Twelve acts took to the stage for the right to represent Sweden on home soil. The lineup included last year’s runners-up Marcus & Martinus, 2020 runner-up Dotter and 2011 and 2012 runner-up Danny Saucedo.
In the end, it was Marcus & Martinus who went one better in 2024, prevailing with their song “Unforgettable”. They won both the jury and public votes comfortably, running away with the trophy.
The final was broadcast on SVT, with English commentary provided by Bella Qvist and our very own William Lee Adams.

Format of Melodifestivalen Grand Final
The result of Melodifestivalen was decided by 50% international jury vote and 50% public vote. Juries from these 8 countries gave their results Eurovision style:

After the jury vote, the public had another recap and 10 more minutes to vote. When voting finished, the public vote was read out with each song receiving their collective number of points from all 8 age groups.

Sweden is just incapable of dropping its policy of sleazy, mediocre and forgettable pop. Or maybe iit is just their calculation. Anyway, it’s pathetic.

A ballad Italy in 2024? You are probably deaf. Or just biased. Italy has brought ballads, urban (soldi), group rock (Zitti e Buoni), jazz (2011), female rock (Emma), uptempo song (Gabbani) etc. etc. Always in Italian, or few times with only some sentences in english, only. Sweden always bring the same cheesy pop sung in english with props to compensate the lacking quality. Come on, be serious. We are not stupids like you.
Anyway, FYI, La Noia is not a ballad but a south italian rhythm (taranta) with influences from the colombian dance named cumbia. Is that a ballad? You are quite funny.
It is a mid-to-low “okay” pop song that does not hurt anyone. For me, it fits the category of those songs that are usually side-performances during concert intervals, mostly enriched with visuals, dancing choreographies, and electronic-pop vibes.
I feel like Swedes vote purely based on the betting odds.
That’s why I believe the betting odds are the poison of the quality in music. Some people, especially in the selections for Eurovision, don’t vote for the better song in terms of quality, but for the one with the higher chances of winning Eurovision. I believe it should be better each country organizes the selection like Sanremo. And then, the winner may want to go to Eurovision. This will bring much more variety to Eurovision. Same reason the betting odds should be prohibited for eurovision, too.
(Besides the quite massive point that Melodifestivalen is a stand-alone contest where the main reason people watch it actually isn’t related to Eurovision so viewers don’t vote according to what they believe would do well in the ESC but rather what they personally like)

I dont particularly like this song and I dont think I Will listen to It anymore in my Life but there IS a good/very good thing about this song and Swedish songs at Esc in general: they never are the “song with a message” type. You might hate/dislike the song and no one IS going to Tell you: “this IS because you dont get the message”
Probably they think that a message will cause discussions and could risk to polarize the audience. So they stick to useless dance/pop songs. They don’t hurt anybody’s feelings and continue to get the support of the most swedish culturally influenced juries.

Oh yes – it is a ballad, but so lacking in power that even that polar bear song from San Marino seems like a tearjerker in comparison. I guess they can try to push it with some memorable staging, but looking at other songs it that semi, this will most likely get lost and forgotten by the public and the only people voting for it will be people who want to vote because it’s Israel.
The song is decent, but when it comes to ballads, its not a patch on Israels finest moment, “Hasheket Shenish’ar”.
This one is definitely an attempt at looking soft, non-threatening and victimlike. Eden Golan is sent to do a Polina Gagarina to try and turn around the countries perceptions. Its about as conscious-less and blatant as Russias attempt at a redemption. Lol.
Objectively the staging is good but is it really that creative? They just brought a giant complex of walls with epileptic lighting. Well at least it’s easier to take one’s attention away from the mediocrity of a song.
Song is mediocre, dancing is almost non existant, their vocals are obviously not powerful, and staging is literraly just walls with led and light and TV onscreen “Poland 23 like” effects done a bit better then Blanka did. Overall, around 15th to 20th in the final and totaly unnoticed of performed by any country other then Sweden – Done by Sweden and easy top 10

Plastic music, as everything else coming from Sweden. Like Ikea’s food, full of terrible oils like canola, rapeseed and palm, very bad for your health. I believe every country should stop thinking to Eurovision when they select a song. Do I feel the soul of Sweden in this song? No. Not at all. Look into Ikea furniture: The wood often isn’t real wood but only compressed cappboards inside. That’s why most of their “furniture” is superlight. It’s not sustainable and fake.
Most people don’t know that they don’t buy wood but mostly cappboard material.
You should watch the Arte’s documentary on IKEA, to see what’s behind their furnitures. Good thing is that Swedish are perceived as the most climate friendly. But IKEA destroys woods in Romania and Poland.

I’m not going to defend IKEA here (in the first place because it’s a forum dedicated to Eurovision) but it’s a bit easy to attack a country based on a world-famous brand that comes from there. Just like in 2015. Heroes was a standard pop song, but with the visual they improved it so much to be able to defeat the televote winners. It seems like Sweden has this idea in mind: “Eurovision is our thing”. When Måneskin won, SVT said to RAI “You are not able to do it, we can help you”. F**k o**. No, you are wrong. I liked Cornelia Jacobs. That song had much better quality. I liked Euphoria. I didn’t like Tattoo (a copycat sung with a out of tune voice). I know, but still they advertise they are a green and sustainable company (watch on their website) but if you watch the ARTE documentary, you notice they are destroying (without too much advertisement) large swaths of forests in Poland and Romania, without even respecting the diameter of the trees to preserve the oldest ones. And when journalists ask them about that, they don’t answer or threatens the journalists. Ikea furniture must have real wood, somewhere. A piece of furniture cannot stand if manufactured only based on recycled wood/paper cappboards.

Well, I’m sure Swedish people love songs in Swedish and that there are Swedish songs on radios in Sweden, so radiofriendly songs in Swedish exist. Everyone comparing this to Benjamin Ingrosso must have the hearing capabilites of many white cats, because the songs are extremly different. The stagings are simillar but sonically? People just want something to hate. Had any other country sent this most of this chat would cream their knickers.
Different songs definitely, but the best part of this song is staging. Which is the same as Benjamin’s. The song itself is, well… forgetable.

Staging instantly reminded me of Benjamin Ingrosso which of course got very little love from the televote that year, and I feel that the same fate may be facing this.
The song itself is pretty bland so needs the staging to elevate it, polished to within an inch of its life. Personally would have backed Medina as I felt they were genuinely enjoying themselves and a feel good song wouldn’t have gone amiss in Malmo.
Im not Swedish, but even i can see that people are literally mad that Sweden always send quality, and they almost always get rewarded for it. Your sentence that Sweden always sends quality is questionable. Sweden always sends songs that are manufactured for Eurovision. When there is no quality in the song or in the singer, they make up with staging and props. And this happens quite always.

Seems like Sweden is stressig more than ever the euroVISION part of eurovision and not so much the original grand prix de la chanson (song).

I have a theory about what Sweden sends to Eurovision: It goes in cycles. It might be Easy to predict more or less what they are going to choose. To me, that’s far from a passing resemblance. It’s a direct rip-off, just as with ‘Tattoo’ and both Pont Aeri and Mika Newton. And to make matters worse, it concerns the main element of Marcus’ & Martinus’ song.

It’s nice that you give examples of other types of songs we could send. Myself I’ve discussed how things could be different. Some of the changes in Sweden came because we believed we couldn’t qualify for the finals. But for example the year after the finals we wouldn’t need an international jury to select a song for us. Also remember the major music labels in Sweden are heavily involved trying to get their songs and artists selected. So the selection process makes little room for alternative kinds of songs. She’s Australian, but has a Cypriot mother and Greek father. She didn’t grow up in Cyprus, so having a Cypriot background is not the same. We have so many amazingly talented people in Cyprus, and CyBC consistently goes out of their way to select unknown singers from the Cypriot diaspora, or artists famous in Greece. It’s shameful and also dumb, since most of these entries (besides Eleni) don’t result in anything great. Have the guts and pride to send Cypriot artists and help grow the music scene on the island!
They always send the same kind of songs. They never surprise. It IS always the current, mainstream sound that reminds of someone else.
The pop sound that only sounds like everything else because so many of the big pop hits are written by Swedes.
Don’t get me wrong, the Debs aren’t Max Martin. But still, pop is a very Swedish genre.
I have never watched this Melodifestivalen thing but are all the stagings for all the performances (the 2000 Heats and waves or whatever) so “elaborated”? Or do you end Up always choosing by mere chance the song that has the biggest structures, the most lights, effects, flashes, fires and smokes?

You only need to take a risk if your country sends trash every year or has the same formulaic sound year after year.
Sweden always send quality and only know how to send polished pieces of music and performance.

They are signed by a Swedish label and they’ve already had a hit here like ten years ago. Swedes and Norwegians are like brothers and sisters. I don’t think your concerns are legit. Swedish major labels make sure they send in songs and that their artists are picked so that they get good results in the competition and from there get a good income in the long run. So, out of a few thousand songs sent in to MF every year, we get to see 20+ songs from the same composers, and they are back year, after year, after year? I guess Sweden is a country with no composers, terrible producers, and no music scene, so they must choose the same people, even 75% the same singers because there are no singers in Sweden, right? Such a political organization, 100% unfair, and someone should investigate and punish those in charge!
Thousands, yes. But many from the same composers who make a living from the competition. The major labels holding their artists and sending their songs to compete. That is what Björkman wanted when he changed the completion 20 years ago. Nothing to investigate
And SVT absolutely need to do something to increase diversity in Melfesf. Nowadays it feels like it’s almost impossible for “regular”, popular artists to do what the Ark did and participate (and win) melodifestivalen. It’s bad for the competition and it’s bad for the Swedish music scene to have melfest dominating the spring with the same songwriters and artists and then all of the “real” stuff gets released in the autumn. Because in Norway MGP is not as huge Melodifestivalen is in Sweden viewership wise, and also they do not allow such advance staging as Mello do. Therefore it is better for an artist to go to Melodifestivalen to get more exposure and bigger fan base…in average each semi is watched by around 2-2,5 million Swedes each week and the final usually around 3-3,5 million, in a country where 10 million lives… Also to add that these numbers are only TV viewers so not counting people watching online. That is why they rather go and compete in Sweden than Norway.
There have been many Swedes enter MGP, many Fins enter Melodifestivalen, and so on. There’s no rule or regulation against it. They share a similar sound across their countries musically so it makes sense.
Much like Cyprus and Greece do.
You dont have to represent the country you were born in. Many many artists represent countries that weren’t of their origin. No biggie.
Yes the only RULES Melodifestivalen have is that at least ONE of the writers are Swedish citizens and that the song is not extending the 3 minute mark, that is it more or less so the artists can come anywhere in the world and still be able to compete.
