Tonight when the Eurovision 2014 final kicks off, Mariya Yaremchuk will be thinking about her dance moves, her giant hamster wheel, and her song “Tick-Tock.” She’ll also be thinking about the people of Ukraine. Over the past two weeks Mariya has listened to news of upheaval and conflict in her homeland. Among other things, pro-Russian activists torched a trade union building in Odessa, killing dozens.

Her performance of “Tick-Tock” is about a lot more than entertainment. “There is this very special feeling when you represent the country,” Yaremchuk told me on April 30. “You fight the strongest fight because you are fighting for your nation. I’m fighting for 46 million Ukrainians. I have to do it.”

The entire team from wiwibloggs.com is sending Mariya our best wishes for tonight. You can read more about Mariya in the Newsweek article “Winner Takes It All?”
