Moldova is yet to confirm its participation in Eurovision 2016, but already the first submission for O melodie pentru Europa has been revealed – the very emotional song “Alone” by singer-songwriter Sasha Bognibov. “Alone” is Sasha’s 16th song written for Eurovision.
Sasha’s previous songs have dealt with themes such as loving teenage girls (“I Love the Girls”, 2008) and lesbians (“My Lesbian Girl”, 2014), but his 2015 entry “Wounded Swan” saw Sasha get serious and emotional, singing a sad but hopeful song of a wounded swan (it’s a metaphor, y’all).
But while “Wounded Swan” was full of hope, “Alone” is much darker. “I will go out to the edge of the world/Feeling frustrated and feeling alone”, he sings in the stripped down verses. But soon the song erupts into a very catchy and bold electro chorus, with Sasha declaring “Everybody! Love somebody alone!”.
“Alone” is almost four minutes long, which of course would have to be reduced by one minute for entry to Eurovision. But if Il Volo can do it, so can Sasha.
Sasha has never made it to the televised heats of O melodie pentru Europa, but given his magnetic stage presence (this is a man whose ‘talent’ on Romania’s Got Talent was being Sasha Bognibov), maybe 2016 could be his lucky year.
But regardless of how he does, the release of Sasha Bognibov’s entry for 2016 is a sign that the national final season has finally kicked off.
