Following the devastating and unprecedented cancellation of Eurovision 2020, silver linings have been popping up around the continent in the shape of Eurovision 2021 confirmations. The latest has come from Athens, with ERT confirming that Stefania will take to the stage for Greece at Eurovision 2021.

In response to the cancellation of the contest, ERT writes:

“ERT has already assessed the very positive reception from Greek and European audiences towards this year’s selection of the talented Stefania Liberakakis, as well as the cooperation we have had with her. ERT intends to continue this cooperation over time, as the EBU’s final decisions become known.”

This decision is not only significant for Greece, but also for Dutch audiences, as Stefania was born and raised in The Netherlands.

She has already competed on the Dutch edition of The Voice Kids and for The Netherlands at Junior Eurovision 2016 with the girl group Kisses. It seems only right that Stefania still has the chance to represent one of her countries onstage in her other home country.

Stefania has not yet responded to the cancellation of Eurovision, but we expect her to do so in due course, as she is set to appear on Dutch television this evening, for an interview with Eva Jinek.

What do you think? Are you pleased to hear that Greece has decided to hold onto their representative? Let us know in the comments!

Good decision but it’s hard to deliver something better than “Supergirl”. It’s such a nice song.

How can they already decide this? How can Stefania promise to compete next year, when nobody have even planned a new song for her? It can really be horrible songs if 2020 artists joins next year too 🙂

Artists have at least 6 months to compose new songs, I think it’s enough time to produce something decent 🙂

Honestly I wish we could have two Eurovision editions in 2021 somehow. It’s unfair to everyone, to the artists and the songs they presented that are going to waste, to the composers as well; to the 2021 national finals participants, which won’t be allowed to take part to eurovision; to the audience that, huh, are going through a 2 year esc break so that would be a nice way to make up for this.

This is going to be a very confusing week. I already don’t know what’s going on. I’m trying to be optimistic, but it’s hard. But we will survive, it’s only one year after all. We cannot let the coronavirus dampen our spirits. Stay strong, everybody!

This is not a happy moment for anyone, but France now have brilliant chance to get things sorted for 2021. Hope they take that chance.

Yeah and let Tom write something on his own, all of his other songs are better than “Best in Me”…

This is good, I hope we get to see a lot more people from this year confirmed for next year. The only problem for countries like Sweden and Italy. Sanremo is obviously going to still go on, it’s even older than Eurovision. Melodifestivalen is like the biggest tv show in Sweden so I expect they’re still gonna put it on. So what will happen to the Mamas and Diodato?

The Mamas has already been to Eurovision in a way, so I think they’ll be fine. It’s more worse for the artists who actually hasn’t been there

Many artists participate on Sanremo without having Eurovision in mind, so I don’t think it would be a big deal if RAI decided to go with Diodato anyway. Also, the next edition will probably be more about Italy closing their wounds after a lot of suffering and loss. It tends to be more about national communion than a proper competition.

Melfest on the other hand… I don’t know how the Swedish (both artists and audience) would feel if the contest doesn’t give a ticket to Eurovision along with the trophy.

Exactly! Also San Remo isn’t the official ESC contest or whatever..
Hope to see Hurricane next year with an even bigger smash! They are huge in Serbia and surrounding countries, so it would be a great choice to send them

Unless it was Diodato’s dream to go to Eurovision, I think they should go with the new winner of Sanremo. They would probably have a really relevant song and a good chance to win Eurovision.

I think this is a fair decision. I feel bad for all the artists who were set to compete this year, but they had to put the safety of the fans, artists and their teams first, which was the best decision. I’d like to see some of the artists keep their songs that were set for this year, but whether they’ll be allowed to, I’m not so sure.

I imagine discussions when the same artists will release new songs for 2021. Everyone will compare the old and the new ones. So many fans will be dissapointed.

Just heard a phenomenal version ofJeangu Macrooys ‘Grow’ at live Dutch TV show (De Wereld Draait Door, I guess it wil be on YT soon, the performance). It was like a goodbye to Eurovision 2020. Really strong and emotional, post it if possible !

I think it be easier for the internal is like ours to participate next year than this for those who won national finals. I hope that most of the 2020 artist will be able crispy, but I am expecting some new names for 2021. In that case, everybody should have a new song, no matter the quality of the entries of this year. It’s only fair so that all songs are on a level playing field
