The UK’s Eurovision 2020 representative James Newman has released the latest single from his upcoming EP.

“Better Man” is a raspy, mid-tempo pop song with soul elements, and it’s well-suited to James’ signature style. The chorus features some heavy percussion and piano chords, complimenting his powerful vocals. The lyrics describe a person who has mistreated their partner. The song sees them reflecting on mistakes, and promising to change ways to become a “Better Man”.

“You were my first love, you’re still my best friend,
Oh I made some mistakes, I won’t make ‘em again,
That’s a promise, I’m not gonna let this go I swear,
I’m trying to be a better man”

James co-wrote “Better Man” with Ollie Green, who has written for Ella Henderson and HARLOE, who has herself written for Britney Spears and Celine Dion.

Announcing the song on Twitter and Instagram, the star from North Yorkshire said:

“I’m very proud of it. It’s about self development which I’ve been trying to do and will continue to do. Educate myself, listen and try to do my part.”

James is best known for his work as a songwriter. He has written hits for multiple pop superstars, including Rudimental, Jess Glynn and his brother John Newman.

In 2020, Newman was internally selected by the BBC to represent the United Kingdom at Eurovision with the song “My Last Breath”.

As of yet, there has been no word from the BBC or partner record label BMG on whether James will return to represent his country in Rotterdam next year.

This song is so much better than My Last Breath!!! I think had this been the 2020 entry he really could have stood out and really had a chance at hitting top 10. Hope he comes back next year with a heart felt anthem like this!! Really could bring back some interest from the uk 🙂

OMG. That voice. That voice. I really, really, really want James back next year. With an even better song that My Last Breath. He’s got that awesome raspy, powerful and confident and assuring voice. He’s got the stage presence. From what I’ve seen in interviews he seems like an amazing guy. The style of songs I’ve heard from his so far (three to be exact and they’ve all been featured on this site) are not my cuppa since I don’t like the “anthemic” vibe to be very honest. But if that is his style and what he feels most comfortable performing… Read more »

Didn’t BBC say that he will represent UK next year?

Where did they say that? I’ve read this article and the Eurovision official account and according to which the UK have not confirmed James’ participation.

For me, he’s been one of the discoveries of this year. Seems like a full package of a performer. Does a lot of good things in both of his songs.

He is a GREAT artist and person in general. A sweet guy!

However, I’d prefer him as a songwriter and get someone else be on stage. He has the connections, cmon BBC put some pressure!

I believe in him as a songwriter *and* as a performer. I hope he’ll be back next year. #please #jamesnewmanESC2021
