The UK’s Eurovision 2020 representative James Newman has released the latest single from his upcoming EP.
“Better Man” is a raspy, mid-tempo pop song with soul elements, and it’s well-suited to James’ signature style. The chorus features some heavy percussion and piano chords, complimenting his powerful vocals. The lyrics describe a person who has mistreated their partner. The song sees them reflecting on mistakes, and promising to change ways to become a “Better Man”.
“You were my first love, you’re still my best friend,
Oh I made some mistakes, I won’t make ‘em again,
That’s a promise, I’m not gonna let this go I swear,
I’m trying to be a better man”
James co-wrote “Better Man” with Ollie Green, who has written for Ella Henderson and HARLOE, who has herself written for Britney Spears and Celine Dion.
Announcing the song on Twitter and Instagram, the star from North Yorkshire said:
“I’m very proud of it. It’s about self development which I’ve been trying to do and will continue to do. Educate myself, listen and try to do my part.”
I hope everyone is safe and well. The next song from my EP is called ‘Better Man’, I’m very proud of it. It’s about self development which I’ve been trying to do and will continue to do. Educate myself, listen and try to do my part. I hope you enjoy xhttps://t.co/iPQaMtCTAB pic.twitter.com/Te1F06WzbU

James is best known for his work as a songwriter. He has written hits for multiple pop superstars, including Rudimental, Jess Glynn and his brother John Newman.
In 2020, Newman was internally selected by the BBC to represent the United Kingdom at Eurovision with the song “My Last Breath”.
As of yet, there has been no word from the BBC or partner record label BMG on whether James will return to represent his country in Rotterdam next year.
What do you think of “Better Man”? Would you like to see James Newman return to Eurovision in 2021? Let us know in the comments below!
This song is so much better than My Last Breath!!! I think had this been the 2020 entry he really could have stood out and really had a chance at hitting top 10. Hope he comes back next year with a heart felt anthem like this!! Really could bring back some interest from the uk 🙂
Didn’t BBC say that he will represent UK next year?
For me, he’s been one of the discoveries of this year. Seems like a full package of a performer. Does a lot of good things in both of his songs.
He is a GREAT artist and person in general. A sweet guy!
However, I’d prefer him as a songwriter and get someone else be on stage. He has the connections, cmon BBC put some pressure!
Sounds like ‘Last Breath’ lite.
its like saying that Pink doesn’t have similar sound in her music! Still doesn’t mean that she is not great artist
