Belarus in Junior Eurovision 2020: Arina Pehtereva with “Aliens”
Belarus is currently in the midst of a major political crisis. As a result, there were doubts surrounding its Junior Eurovision 2020 participation. But on October 9, the Belarussian broadcaster announced that Arina Pekhtereva will represent the nation with “Aliens”.
And with the announcement comes a big milestone. Belarus has competed in every edition of Junior Eurovision since its inauguration in 2003. And this is the first time that both the artist and song have been selected behind closed doors.
However, a national selection had been planned. Belarus launched the process during the summer. But between the national crisis and the ongoing pandemic, the delegation at BTRC opted to review all submissions themselves.
The Mogilev-born singer started taking singing classes at the age of six and enrolled in music school two years later. As well as being fond of music, Arina also likes drawing, photography and painting.
She’s no stranger to Junior Eurovision itself. Arina has competed in almost every edition of Belarus’ national selection since she’s been old enough to enter! She also tried out for The Voice Kids in Ukraine.
What do the “Aliens” lyrics mean?
“Aliens” sends a strong message of hope to pretty much all of us hit by the current pandemic. Various restrictions may apply, but it’s on us to make some change in the world and save it: “We will save together / The storm is not good weather / We can save this world”
Speaking with the Junior Eurovision website, Arina revealed more about the writting proces: “The song was written back in the spring, when the coronavirus epidemic broke out in the world. The idea behind the song is simple: the world has stopped, the borders have closed, people can no longer communicate, visit each other, even the Junior Eurovision Song Contest this year has changed. However, I believe that the future is in our hands, and it is up to us children to save this world and make it better!”
Arina’s favourite part of the track is the refrain: “Most all I like the chorus because I think it reflects the idea of my song”.
The music video for “Aliens” sees Arina all glamed-up performing the song on an empty stage. The starry projections in the background appear from beginning to end and contribute towards the ballad’s moodiness. Chaotic thoughts of grey skies spring to mind.
Still, at the very end Arina reminds us that brighter days are on their way: “Look, it’s getting brighter”.

Belarusian textBezhim po tonkomu lʹdu, ot·stavaya na chas. Nebo plachet, no my slepyye prishelʹtsy. Odinokiye gosti na shumnoy Zemle. Sky – is crying, Obychnyye lyudi, realʹnyye istorii We can bright, we can shine in the night. Nebo plachet, no my slepyye prishelʹtsy. |
English translationRunning on a thin ice, an hour behind. The sky is crying, but we are blind aliens. Lonely guests on a noisy Earth. Sky – is crying, Ordinary people, real stories We can bright, we can shine in the night. The sky is crying, but we are blind aliens. |
How do you like Belarus’ Junior Eurovision 2020 song? Let us know in the comments below.
she said the song is in russian
This is Mario’s 224th post lol
With all due respect, the original lyrics are in Russian, not Belarusian.
Still wondering why Polegend is so quiet about JESC this year… Not a single comment of him in any article related to JESC 2020 entry so far.
dont talk bad about the king
I’m actually looking forward for his opinions. No one’s talking bad about him. Maybe learn how to comprehend my comment first before jumping into conclusion?
wiwibloggs why are you even covering Belarus? the dictator kills his people and yesterday the military had machine guns ready for protesters. This is chosen by the regime. 0% the people. I am dissappointed in you
Because they’re making articles about each of the JESC 2020 countries’ respective entries. It’s as simple as that.
sometimes you have to take a stand against killer countris, right? one is NOW
I prefer my media outlets to cover what they claim they should be covering. I don’t need a music website to do my critical thinking for me.
An article is not an endorsement of anything.
Author of this song was arrested because he is against Lukashenko. He is free right now but still. Also in august when this song came out Arina wrote that she wants to represent Belarus under new flag (???? this one). So think about it and shut up please (sorry for being rude but you weren’t better)
Because Arina is there and she is expressing these feelings. Neither you nor wiwibloggs has any better right to gag her than Lukashenka and he has none. Let us listen to the Belarus children too, not just the dictator. Wiwibloggs did right to let us do that. Although Arina is from the dictator’s home town she does not say she speaks for the dictator. And a song is a song: people have to put politics into it as they want. This song could easily be a song of the democratic resistance if they want that: it fits perfectly. Musically, it… Read more »
Powerful song but the english part wasn’t needed
Of course not, if you understand Russian . . .but the rest of us?
Also Arina announced points from Macedonia in Junior Eurovision 2018 and was a jury member for Belarus in Junior Eurovision 2019 😀
Arina has such a powerful voice and is able to deliver that complicate song live. I think, that this song is one of the best songs in JESC 2020 – works great for the adult ESC fans (like me) but will it be loved by the kids as well?
My top 11 (so far – from Germany):
This song is very beautiful and it belongs together with Kazakhstan to my big favorites this year.
So far, the clear winner.
Rectification : So far, YOUR clear winner
Rectification: So far, your clear winner. With a period. If you want to get on your high horse and correct me, do it right.
Agreed. If you were a betting man, this is probably where your money would be going. It’s not a “clear” winner in the way that Poland 2019 was but it has to be the favourite.
Interested to see what Georgia and Armenia are bringing though!
Most of the things we have that serve the function of polls in politics, like voting simulations and youtube poll videos, show Aliens winning, although sometimes the jury votes pull it over when it ranks 2nd or 3rd in the televote. I can understand: the sound is quite “dark” for little children and they don’t really understand the message. Arina is 12, not 9,and she doesn’t jump around like her competitors. Are these “polls” meaningful? Who knows? My guess is the real answer will come from whether the Poles can deliver 2 or 3 million televotes again: if yes, little… Read more »
Brilliant song! Deserves to win!
Deserve to win as all children participating.
