The race to Eurovision is heating up in Sweden. Twelve superstar acts will compete in the Melodifestivalen 2022 grad final, all hoping to get their hands on the coveted Swedish ticket to Turin. Amongst them is semi-final one winner Cornelia Jakobs, who bids to represent Sweden with her song “Hold Me Closer”

Melodifestivalen 2022: Cornelia Jakobs — “Hold Me Closer”

Cornelia Jakobs, 29, is through to the Melodifestivalen 2022 final after her third Mello attempt as a performer, and fourth overall.

In 2011 and 2012, she participated as part of girl group Love Generation, and in 2021 she returned as one of the songwriters behind Efraim Leo’s “Best of Me”.

Cornelia is the daughter of The Poodles’ Jakob Samuels — who took on the Melfest challenge in 2006 and 2008 — and has been surrounded by music all her life.

Since she was just seven years old, she found her forte on the stage and grew up playing in various rock bands throughout middle school. Cornelia’s discography already boasts nine singles, with her debut studio album set for release soon.

What do the “Hold Me Closer” lyrics mean?

“Hold Me Closer” is about the emotional turmoil of working through a difficult breakup. Cornelia Jakobs sings about wanting to hold on to her significant other for as long as possible, even though she knows their relationship is coming to an end.

With lyrics such as “I found the right one at the wrong time” and “guess all the good things come to an end”, Cornelia laments the happenstance and spontaneity of love.

“Hold Me Closer” lyrics — Cornelia Jakobs (Melfest 2022)

Songwriters: Cornelia Jakobsdotter, Isa Molin and David Zandén

No need to apologise
‘Cause there’s nothing to regret
Well, this is not what I wanted
Guess all the good things come to an end

So baby bye, bye
Wish you the best
But most of alI I wish that I could love you less
Well, maybe you’re right
I’ll find someone else
You say it isn’t me, but when did that ever help?

Hold me closer
Although you’ll leave before the sunrise
I’ll be bleeding, but don’t you mind, I’ll be fine
Oh, it kills me
I found the right one at the wrong time
But until the sunrise
Hold tight, hold tight

Maybe it happened too fast
I guess that I understand
You say that you’ve never felt this way for anyone
And that’s why it scares you to death

So baby bye, bye
Know it’s for the best
Still I can’t see how that would ease the pain in my chest

Hold me closer
Although you’ll leave before the sunrise
I’ll be bleeding, but don’t you, mind I’ll be fine
Oh, it kills me
I found the right one at the wrong time
But until the sunrise
Could you just hold me tight?
I know, I have to let go, but just give me the night

‘Cause tomorrow will hurt
Hurt really bad
‘Cause I’m about to lose the best I ever had

Hold me closer
Although you’ll leave before the sunrise
I’ll be bleeding, but don’t you mind, I’ll be fine
Oh, it kills me
I found the right one at the wrong time
But until the sunrise
Could you just hold me tight?
I know, I have to let go, but just give me the night (Hold me tight, hold me tight)

Can’t you see that you found the right one at the wrong time?
It was just the wrong time
Hold tight, hold tight

The ESC-community is so toxic! You guys can’t expect a new Euphoria every year from Sweden. I have really loved ESC but because of the toxic community (that Wiwibloggs is feeding more and more the last couple of years) I feel like I care less about ESC and more about Melfest. I used to care about who we send to ESC. But now I only care about who wins Melfest for the honor of it. Not for the ticket to ESC.

It is toxic yes. But I reccomend you to visit the official Eurovision site on YT, there people still are nice even if they dont like the songs. Basically any other ESC forum too..

Sorry if you feel I have been nasty. I try to be nice most of the time. ESC fandom is becoming more toxic generally, but I don’t think Wiwi is actively “feeding” that, as Sandra put it. Rather, social media toxicity has risen over the past 10 years, which has then intersected with Wiwi’s blog-editorial approach and magnified. Indeed, there are still nice people everywhere and on other forums, so the “community” may yet turn this around.

Wiwi might not be responsible as such but I feel like their “motto” news with attitude is used as a reason to be catty and vicious. ESC is supposed to be nice and cheery even if you dont like entries. Instead it slowly turns into Star Wars fandom
.

I love the song and her “flawed” performance definitely made it perfect! I wish Cornelia the best today as it’s her birthday and also because I’d like this song to be featured at ESC! 😀

Such a perfect song. I’m horribly jealous of these songwriters. 🙂

Cornelia and S10 will fight for the win.

Authenticity is so important, especially within all the chaos we have this year. These are the only two acts which feel authentic.

Is it fair to compare this song to Johnny Logan’s “Hold Me Now”?

There are similarities.

Of course I love to laugh, makes me feel good. I don’t go and bombard a forum of an artist i don’t like just for the sake of it, that seems to be your thing

Would be impressive but no. I just think the song itself is so by-the-book and uncreative… Sweden can do better. They’ve sent awesome stuff before but every year it deteriorates a bit more than the last 🙁

As a Swede I find this annual Sweden-hate so sad. No matter what song we bring it’s “generic” this and “jury bait” that. Christer Björkman has left the buildning, last win was 7 years ago and last year we ended up 14th. Time to let go? There’s way to much hate in the world. Love! Love! Peace! Peace!

As a Swede I don’t see the negative comments as “Sweden-hate”. We all have different opinions and live in different countries and cultures so we’re going to like different things. We Swedes love radio friendly pop music more than any other country out there which is why we’re also the biggest producer of pop (per capita) in the world. It makes sense that our music competitions are completely filled with pop songs since it’s basically the genre of our country, however it’s important to remember that most countries and people do not share the same history and love for pop… Read more »

  • I think the same, the lyrics are just so basic and the melody is nothing special either.

I have loved watching it on YouTube and thought this probably is this year’s winner in ESC. But listening to it on Spottfy after a while was quite underwhelming and disappointing, maybe I have beeen more in love with her look and performance than the actual song? This is regardless Sweden’s best pick on Saturday!

This shouldn’t be the new Bulletproof or the new Statements , it should be the new Euphoria. Not this time Sweden

Appearently while writing the song about her breakup she ended up starting dating the co-song writer David since they were starting working so close together haha

decent song, wouldn’t mind if she won, but i can connect more to Klara’s song, i really like the motivational message in run to the hills more

my only point of criticism is i find it too similar to Lady GaGa’s Shallow, in terms of build-up and melody but honestly i do not mind that since i love that song a lot

but may the best win, and may both Cornelia, Klara have very good results both are very deserving of a top 3 here, even top 2 if you ask me
