Earlier this afternoon the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — flew (and for an incredibly long time) to Sydney. The jet lag affected our sightseeing of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House, but after a slice of Vegemite toast and a glass of Pinot Grigio from the Hunter Valley, we were inspired to review Bella Paige‘s JESC 2015 song “My Girls”. Did we want to hit our big red button and turn our chairs for Bella? Or were we left screaming ‘NEXT!!”? Read on to find out…

AUSTRALIA’S JUNIOR EUROVISION 2015 SONG

“MY GIRLS” REVIEWS – AUSTRALIA AT JESC 2015

Robyn: This is easily my favourite song for JESC 2015. It’s a great modern pop anthem and is perfect for Bella’s amazing voice. Bella’s performances on The Voice Kids suggests she has what it takes to bring the house down in Sofia. This could deliver Australia a JESC victory.

Score: 10/10

Josh: BELLA! YES! Excuse my incredibly biased opinion, but I do think that this is the best song in the contest this year. A powerful voice, a lovely message and Delta Goodrem’s lyrics. Who could want more than that? Some of my fellow bloggers believe this song is too mature for the junior contest. Sorry, but who are kids listening to these days? Taylor Swift, Jessie J, Little Mix, etc. They don’t want no child, child! They want a star that kids can aspire to be. Bella Paige, you are a star!

Score: 10/10

Antranig: “My Girls” is everything you could ask for in a JESC entry. With a powerful voice and a song with a beautiful message, Bella delivers the most complete package of the year. Add some good staging and a great live performance and Bella Paige has “winner” written all over her. There are some really good songs this year but Bella is just a cut above the competition.

Score: 10/10

Liam: The fact that my country is making a debut at Junior Eurovision is insane! The fact that we are coming in with such a bang is even more astounding. This is the ultimate package. I mean an amazing voice and songwriting skills from none other than Delta Goodrem! What more could you ask for?!

Score: 10/10

Deban: Yes, I get the Tina Arena-esque big power belter. However, instead of ferrying me along the shore, it leaves me at the harbour. Although it’s Australia’s debut entry, the production is considerably out of date. When Goodrem started her career as a child, she sang mature-flavoured songs that wowed the nation. Unfortunately, that was 13 years ago! Bella Paige deserves to present herself like the fun-loving 13 year old I’m certain she is.

Score: 6/10

BellaWilliam: Start digging your bomb shelter — Australia is bringing a nuke to JESC! Bella’s voice packs a real punch and her song of perseverance will no doubt become an anthem for girls doin’ it for themselves. And while it will resonate with the ladies (and the little ladies), it’s unclear how all that girl power will sit with the guys. No matter. Bella’s vocals alone will secure her a Top 3 finish.

Score: 8.5/10

Angus: This feels Christmassy and Paloma Faith ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’. It is saccharine…but I have a sweet tooth! Big, sweeping and well-intentioned lyrics resonate with me even if others will write them off as disingenuous. If this is the last thunder from down under to strike our contest Sydney (fine Canberra but I mean how blah…) is going out with a bang!

Score: 7.5/10

Our jury consists of 21 people, but we only have room for 7 written reviews. Here are the remaining 14 scores.

Forgot to post the methodology I’m using:

For each video, I give each song 1-16 points depending on where the uploader ranked the song.

Very close race so far.

To me it seems a lesbian theme song “My girls here we go!” and all the almost moaning exhale vocalizations.

MY GIRLS vs. MY GIRLS “My girls take me for a ride, ready to party and looking so fine. My hips are ready to glow…and I have so much to show…” or “My girls here we go, one voice and one road…” question 1: which song is more forgettable in the long run? question 2: Which girl power vision is more ‘fun’? This is a home run vocal delivery and its familiar structure make it easily palatable, but people may ask themselves if ‘This girl is on fire” or is she just a goody-goody virtuous adolescent without a genuine winning… Read more »

Easily one of the best. 10/10. But the low was 6/10, not 6.5/10. Just saying.

IF IS A MUSIC CONTEST AUSTRALIA MUST TO WIN

I agree that this is a contender for top 3. The jury will love it and no doubt it will get some love from English speaking countries like Malta and Ireland.

Personally-this is not my cup of tea. Too predictable and mainsteam. Australia could have taken some risk, and not just recycled this cookie cutter…

Omigod! What a voice and what a debut! Expect, um, there’s one catch – if Australia wins this year, then, they won’t be allowed to host the 2016 edition, and instead it would have to be one of the following countries:

*Armenia
*Belarus
*Georgia
*Italy
*Netherlands
*Russia
*Ukraine

Good song but will be overrated in juries votes like Australia in adult Eurovison this year, and Australia with juries at Eurovisiion wili be something like Sweden with juries in adult contest, maybe 100 points higher then second place countries with juries votes. My prediction for juries TOP 5 1. Australia minimum 6 x 12 points from juries 2. Malta 3. Slovenia 4. Armenia 5. The Netherlands My prediction for televote TOP 5 1. Armenia 2. Georgia 3. Albania 4. Australia 5. Serbia Fight for victory between Australia and Armenia, but I think thank to overrated votes from juries Australia… Read more »

The best song by far!! I really hope she wins as her voice alone is deserving enough. I’m sure she’ll do well with the jury but I fear that the televoters at home won’t rank her as highly. But anyway it’s a brilliant song sung by a fantastic artist…Good Luck Australia!! 🙂
