Maria Olafs — Iceland’s Eurovision 2015 singer — is stepping out of the darkness and into the recording studio! Yesterday she dropped “Someday”, her first track since Vienna. Lil’ Miss Olafs must have a lot of drama in her personal life: as with her ESC song “Unbroken”, this one is all about perseverance and getting her happy back. As she says: “Someday I’ll find a way, gonna hold on, gonna be strong, to get on the road where I used to be before.”

The thumbnail she’s uploaded with the audio — pictured at top — suggests something decidedly more modern and edgy than her Disney-esque Eurovision song. And while there is the faintest bit of jazz and soul underscoring this, it’s ultimately a throwback to 1980s easy listening. Maria favours simple lyrics and repetitive melodies. It has the unfortunate consequence of making her songs drag after the first minute. But she’s young. Pace, rhythm and narrative will come in time. As for now, sending her singles to the electro-remix-studio is a good salvo!

I’m surprised that I like this song as much as I do
it’s really much more sophisticated than her Eurovision entry
