Una Voce per San Marino 2024 is gearing into action. Broadcaster San Marino RTV, and their partner Casperaki, have now unveiled the four shortlisted AI-generated songs that have a chance of competing in the UVPSM grand final next week.
SMRTV previously announced the acts who are set to compete in the semi-finals of the selection. But it’s not just human lyrists and composers who are getting the opportunity to shine — the computers are as well.
Ten songs created through the use of artificial intelligence were originally in the running. On Monday, Casperaki revealed which four compositions had been selected for the next stage.
Initially, these songs were crafted using Casperaki’s AI tools. Casperaki is a music technology start-up based in London that utilises specialised chatbots powered by AI to function as music producers for songs. Artists interested in this collaboration select an AI producer from the company, specify the music genre they desire, and then proceed to create their songs.
Subsequently, the songwriters took the AI-generated compositions and paired them with singers, transforming them into the final versions. Casperaki has shared the final renditions of these songs on YouTube.
Out of these four compositions, one will be selected to join the ranks of the eight Established Artists in the grand final of Una Voce per San Marino 2024.

The decision of which song wins will be influenced by the people – the production team will assess and consider all comments and likes on the songs. The final choice will be a collaborative decision involving the public and a special jury appointed by San Marino RTV.
The grand final of Una Voce per San Marino is set for Saturday 24 February. Preceding the final, the semi-finals will be recorded on 15 and 16 February, with contestants offered the option to perform either entirely live before the jury or utilise half playback. The semi-finals will then air between 19-23 February.

AI entries aside, we also have Megara to be excited for, and among the big artists i think is our April Darby, she did submit an entry and honestly i cannot see san marino rejecting her, she is a ”whitney” artist here in our musical The Bodyguard, stand in for Romy Monteiro

WOW The last Polar Bear is STUNNING! 😀 She’s charming, the song is nostalgic and the topic is alarming! We need this at Eurovision this year, the song is camp in a good way. I’m sure the televoters will appreciate this song and performer enough to put them through to the final. The jury however…

If you listen carefully to the lyrics regarding the Polar bear it is a metaphor. I won’t go into political detail, but it’s definitely about today in our cruel world.
So basically AI writes great JESC songs, but not ESC ones. The lyrics are so childish.

Well they are modified by songwriters, so they aren’t fully ai, I don’t know if that changes anything but yeah

These 4 songs are quite good to he honest considering that AI is literally in its very beginning. The only backlash is that AI songs can never bring anything new to music at it is generated by known algorithms and nothing brand new. Based on the quality of these 4 songs, which are better than many other NF songs, I do worry for the future of music industry. Just imagine in 10 years time how intelligent AI will become unless someone bans it completely by that time…
I wouldn’t be worried – the songs still had to be reworked by real people and without real singers singing them they wouldn’t have any impact at all.

The same was probably said about the introduction of the first mobile phone as well: “if this is the best they can do, then analog home telephone lines have nothing to worry about”! LoL!
And yet the main function of a mobile phone is still the same as a landline phone – communication. It didn’t do it better, just more portable. Plenty of home phones still exist and telecommunication companies still thrive off landlines. Nothing much has changed, only an alternative was introduced.
Landline phones dont exist in private homes in Norway anymore. They are all gone. So mobile phones are the ONLY option for private use in Norway right now – and that’s the way it will go in other countries as well.

My concerns regarding AI are still raised, though.
Well obviously I dont want AI at Eurovision. However, these are much better than I expected. For some reason quite a few of the singers are British. Dare to Dream sounds like someone put in ‘write a Eurovision song’ into the prompt and then it generated something around the titular Eurovision slogan. However, ‘the Last Polar Bear’ and ‘Neon Lights’ could actually give San Marino more than 0 or 1 point if they stage the song right. Corazon de Mariposa is very mid but seems to combine several styles of music together which is what is interesting about it.
All of them are extremely weak. Another NQ is expected from San Marino this year…
The scope of this process is ridiculous for it and we’re still waiting to hear if anyone from Sanremo is joining.

The real questions: will the EBU be bothered to do anything about this, if one them actually wins? Will AI be credited as a songwriter in the opening credits or does everyone just pretend like nothing happened? Or does San Marino know they won’t get away with it, created this as a distraction and determined another non AI winner anyway? They are playing the game, gotta give them that.
San Marino’s televote result is decided by AI, which is even worse.

Neon Rain quite good, bit of an upbeat dance number in a semi of ballads can get through to the final.

Not the good ones, anyway. When I consider the lyrics of La Voix, Popular, You, Undo my sad, all the humans were born as a human beings and so many others, then AI can definitely trump that.

The polar bear one obviously. Marie Wegener sings so beautifully that she almost makes the crap she is singing bearable. That one really sounds as if it was created by AI. Or humans with absolutely no writing skills. I’m quite stunned how many really good artists enter the San Marino mass selection. I’m a stan of polar bear Dana regardless.

I never heard of Dana until you mentioned her yesterday, but a quick search on YouTube shows me that she is better than this. Such a shame she had to resort to AI. The first song I randomly clicked on was “Weren’t Born A Man”, which opens with the lyrics “You love like a woman, but you walk like a sailor… you give like a lady, don’t take like a jailor…” AI could never come up with that.
I know, right? Never heard of her either. Then I read about her previous surroundings, Jagger and Bowie and was like “how on earth did she land there? Did she even know what she agreed to?” How does San Marino get such talent? Maybe their careers are over, I don’t know, but Dana and Marie Wegener are so good, it’s heartbreaking. They are literally better than most of the artists headed for Malmö. Life is cruel.
Nebulossa resorted to Una Voce last year, with their song Anoche. They didn’t even make the final. This year they are representing Spain! There is always hope.
The German broadcaster obviously hates anyone who could win for them. Otherwise, they would move heaven and earth to find the perfect song for Marie.
