On Saturday morning, Joost Klein was disqualified from Eurovision 2024 following an incident with a member of staff at the event. Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS have now issued a statement that gives detail on the exact event that occurred.

“An incident occurred after last Thursday’s performance. Against clearly made agreements, Joost was filmed when he had just gotten off stage and had to rush to the greenroom. At that moment, Joost repeatedly indicated that he did not want to be filmed. This wasn’t respected. This led to a threatening movement from Joost towards the camera. Joost did not touch the camera woman. This incident was reported, followed by an investigation by the EBU and police.

“Yesterday and today we consulted extensively with the EBU and proposed several solutions. Nevertheless, the EBU has still decided to disqualify Joost Klein. AVROTROS finds the penalty very heavy and disproportionate. We stand for good manners — let there be no misunderstanding about that — but in our view, an exclusion order is not proportional to this incident.

“We are very disappointed and upset for the millions of fans who were so excited for tonight. What Joost brought to the Netherlands and Europe shouldn’t have ended this way.”

Aftonbladet reports that Joost Klein has admitted the deed in questioning. The case is scheduled to be closed in June. – He said that he was very stressed by all the photographers, and asked them to stop filming. Joost believes that some photographers got way to close. He became angry and raised his arm with a fist and lunged at a photographer, according to the source. However, he didn’t hit the photographer. On the way from the incident, Joost Klein is also said, according to people who were present behind the scene, to have expressed himself very remorsefully and to… Read more »

Fun story, but Aftonbladet is a nasty tabloid. They only have 1 source, and the golden rule in journalism is ‘one source, is no source’. They were also the ones inside the hotel (the one where all the delegations stay) on Friday, following him to the elevator. I wonder if that’s permitted…

We know for sure is that a female employee felt so threatened, she reported the incident to the police. It must have been more than bad “manners”, for which neither Klein or AVROTROS have apologised.

The “threat” is still subjective here, regardless of how Swedish tabloids spin the story. We can’t confirm if this was truly threatening until after the footage has been released. Avrotros had an agreement (made during the rehearsals) with the EBU/SVT to not be filmed. Backstage is a safe space for the participants, and this violation of privacy should now be investigated. The reason they violated his privacy is clear as day: MONEY. Guess what she was filming for? TikTok, a Eurovision sponsor. Joost is the most popular participant this year, so if they didn’t have footage of him, TikTok would’ve… Read more »

Where did you get that from, that they haven’t apologised? AVROTROS had actually said in it’s statement that they proposed to record a public apology by Joost, and a meeting in person with the camera women to apologize, but that both were refused, as were other solutions that they proposed.

So if he comes out to be overall innocent and what AVROTROS says is true (which it most likely is), then 1. They owe Joost and the Netherlands a very public apology 2. If Joost so chooses, he should be allowed to return to Eurovision to perform whenever he feels ready, whether that is as a contestant with a new song in a later year, or performing Europapa as a future interval act 3. Next time Netherlands completes they should get to automatic qualify that year And if they can’t do that to fix their mistakes, …Netherlands should pull out… Read more »

4. EBU should either refund the Netherlands’ 2024 participation fees or fully sponsor the 2025 fees.
5. EBU should spend media budget on Joost’ semi final performance video, to make up for all the views that could have been.
6. Next year, Martin Osterdahl must wear the blue bird suit during his “good to go” ritual.

Martin Österdahl’s resignation is inevitable. And I can totally see The Netherlands’ Sietse Bakker becoming his successor. Bakker’s name has already been floating around as potential future executive supervisor of ESC after a very succesfull edition in Rotterdam in 2021, where he was the executive producer. That would be a fitting part of the compensation for the Netherlands.

Well, in just the last five years Romania, Bulgaria, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Hungary have pulled out of Eurovision. They’ll think twice before returning now that it’s such a sh**show. And of course Russia and Belarus were suspended. Now there is a real chance The Netherlands is going to quit, it’s not a good signal to the rest if a six time winner, that’s been present since the first edition does that. The Dutch commentator gave some more insight last night on his way to the venue. (1) last week during rehearsals, he was also recorded by this same person when he left the stage. He then also indicated that he did not wished to be recorded. This was also again communicated by the Dutch delegation. (2) Europapa ends with a 20 second ode to his deceased parents. Joost is a very special artist and relives his pain during this bit of the song. When he exits the stage, he is in a very vulnerable state of mind. Therefore the request to… Read more »

Best part of this show was the cringe acting of Martin O with his self inflicting mess.

Were was his statement of the disqualification? It seems the organization declared one of his oldest and loyal members for death.

Why took the camera a closeup shot of Petra? Even the name ‘NETHERLANDS’ was clearly not allowed to be shown on tv.

It seems they easily criminalize a country before proven guilt or finding a mutual solution.

Thanks for killing a man’s dream and the enthousiasm of a whole country.

Time for the Netherlands to withdraw entirely, and for other countries to grow a set of b411s and withdraw from this 5h1tshow also. The EBU disqualify a country from the ESC for being threatening to a camera person, but they cant disqualify a country for their g3n0c1da1 actions that goes against the ESC’s very own motto and reasoning for this platforms existence in the first place. The more countries that withdraw, the less money there is for the EBU and the less power they have. Leave the 5h1t5how for the countries that need to manipulate the format in the hope… Read more »

Jokes aside, I recommend the performance for anyone who wants something to see on those 3 minutes. It’s lipped but I think is a nice performance to see. The angles, quality, sound and colors are close to eurovision(maybe even better in terms of video quality)
Pd: yes, mangoTV is the network who used to broadcast eurovision in china.

I’m the same, I just want it to be over. It’s looking more and more likely I won’t even tune in. I might dig out an old contest on YouTube. I’ve also recently got my hands on an RTÉ staff magazine showing behind the scenes at the 1981 contest. Might give that a proper read.

Tonight will be the end of Eurovision as we know it.

EBU chose money (sponsor) and a non-European country over the European participants.

They chose money over happiness and safety.

Nobody in that arena is happy, enjoying or feeling safe and this is all thanks to the selfishness of the EBU and Israel.

Really disappointing and quite honestly disgusting behaviour from EBU and the Israeli delegation.

How about you stop being a sheep and see the unhappiness of many contestants, because they are being intimidated, bullied by Israeli delegation and feeling unsafe.

Visitors in that arena are reporting en masse that the festive atmosphere is completely gone.

Thanks to EBU and Israel.

What is their delegation doing exactly? I’ve read many such comments like yours but nothing really substantial.

Safety in tel aviv next year is non-existent so artists better think twice, what is more important, your life or your career

So this is how you deal with your most loyal countries around EBU. The Netherlands did not reach the final for 8 years. But every year the Netherlands was there again. When Eurovision was at its lowest point in terms of popularity, the Netherlands came up with a Pre party to let the artists shine. And since then, Eurovision in concert has become a household name, which has only increased the festival’s popularity. The Netherlands was there to organize a fantastic festival after the biggest crisis Europe has had since the Second World War. And even today, after the avrotros… Read more »

You’re so right Escpower!
It’s disgraceful and you have every right to be angry.

EBU will suffer the consequences of this. Don’t worry. This will linger like a bad smell for months after tonight and the only way for them to move forward will be to reform.

I don’t know how are laws in Sweden, but in my country a violent verbal reaction against a woman is considered gender violence. Be careful with what you are pretending to minimize.

You need your head checked. Joost was being intimidated and if you care for EQUALITY than he should also be protected from harassment and bullying by this female employee and the entire Israeli delegation.

Israeli delegation is making all non-binairy and contestents who speak out against them UNSAFE. But we don’t hear a word from you about this.

I wonder why. Hypocrite.

You’re making things up. Israel has nothing to do with this incident. This is 100% on him.

If we were debating I think we would have understood better. Maybe my comment was too short to express what I wanted to say. When the police is involved I suposed it is because of something like that, but I’m not accusing.
I’m sad for him, I wish him the best and I expect everything will get resolved. I hope to see him in the next years taking part in the contest.

The staff member violated an agreement with the Netherlands and chose to ignore the warning cues by Joost. I don’t blame her, and Joost should also not be blamed. EBU or the Swedish broadcaster is fully responsible for the actions of their employees.

And it rightfully should be, but there was an agreement to shelter a person with an invisible disability which was also violated, and if the camera woman wasn’t informed about this someone messed up. The penalty is disproportional.

I didn’t expect my comment to be so controversial. I was totally unaware of Joost’s circumstances, which I have now learned from reading comments, and which provide more context to his reaction. I simply wanted to understand and provide an explanation for such a drastic decision by the EBU. It is a very polarized year and we are all very sensitive. I hope everyone enjoys tonight.

Guys, don’t bring Amber Heard into this. She was the clear victim of abuse and Johnny Depp did a smear campaign against her, let’s not forget that. It has been proven that he hit her and SAd her. So dont use her as an example to discredit allegations made by women. Thank you.

There was literally a recording of Amber Heard bullying and mocking Johnny Depp. Abusing him.

There are photos of Johnny Depp with physical wounds caused by Amber Heard.

You are simply lying and supporting abuse of victims.

He abused her. He literally shoved her a bottle down there and there are Recordings of him hitting her, so dont call me a liar.

It’s funny you should say that, I am exactly going to play the Netherlands anyway. I’m still going to play Israel as well but it is just unbelievably mean to exclude Joost from the final.
