Semi final 1 of Eurovision 2015 takes place on Tuesday May 19. Sixteen acts will compete, but only ten will survive the sing-off and advance to the grand final. Last Friday, after all 16 acts had completed their second rehearsal, we asked our readers to vote for their favourites. Over the weekend you guys cast a total of 7,506 votes and Georgia’s Nina Sublatti has emerged as the clear winner. We’re pretty sure a lot of journalists in the press room would agree: Following Nina’s first rehearsal the press corps erupted with applause. This “Warrior” is ready for battle.

Georgia: Nina Sublatti Second Rehearsal

What we said: This is how you slay. Georgia’s Nina Sublatti turned up to her first rehearsal at Eurovision 2015 with the toal package — vocals, costume, camera angles and attitude. Vocally this was dark, mysterious and pitch-perfect. That carried over to the staging, which saw Nina standing still with a lot of LED magic happening around her. At various points she sprouted wings, stood on lightning, and swirled in an other-worldly universe of clouds. During the bridge we see two large eyeballs releasing tears. But Nina, don’t cry: You’ve just threw yourself in contention to win Eurovision. Her costume — which looks like a Victoria’s Secret model at a Dracula party — is an example of a racy outfit that works.

Belgium: Loic Nottet Second Rehearsal

What we said: During his second rehearsal, Belgium’s Loic Nottet was more self-assured and camera aware. He’s put the missed steps from the first rehearsal behind him and sang with major ferocity. He even added some of his “Nightmare in Wonderland” choreography, grabbing his face and shoving it to the side. He wore a black coat with tails. When he does his super fast triple twist the tails fly outward and it’s kind of amazing. There’s also a small splash of colour amid all the black and white: The shirt under his coat has thin orange stripes. This got better and better with each take and we’re feeling way more confident than on Monday.

Greece: Maria Elena Kyriakou Second Rehearsal

What we said: Aphrodite. Demeter. Maria Elena Kyriakou. Yes, Greece’s Eurovision 2015 starlet looked like a Greek goddess during her first rehearsal at Eurovision 2015. She wore a sparkly, spangly number that looked straight-up showgirl — but in an expensive, high-class way. The blue background, which features white circular displays, keeps Maria Elena in focus. They’ve really dusted off the performance from the Greek national selection. It’s a more contemporary and up-to-date, which turns a potentially dated song into one that resonates with today. As ever her vocals are fierce and on point. LOVE.

Seems like Nordic countries love Greece. I don’t think juries have the right not to aprecciate Maria Elena’s voice. She should be voted even if she was singing the worst song in the world, only for her voice. And Finland is in first place. Are they trolling us???

I dont think the Netherlands will qualify, I hope they do, but I doubt they will, I think Belgium will be representing the Low Countries in the final this year. Which is cool too, I think Netherlands reveals their songs way too soon, over the Christmas period is way too early I think, especially if you dont revamp the songs (like other countries who reveal them around this time) as it gets closer to the contest. I have a strange feeling that Finland will manage to qualify, but I hope it doesn’t, I dont think Georgia will win the semi,… Read more »

I don’t think we (Holland) will make it. We should though. It is not good, but still better then most of the others in semi final 1.

I’ve watched preview shows from all of the nordic countries except Denmark, where juries consisting of musicians and people in the music branch (just like the real juries) rate this year’s songs. This was the combined results in points for semifinal 1: 1. Finland: 128 2. Russia: 126 2. Albania: 126 4. Romania: 123 5. Estonia: 122 6. Belgium: 117 7. Macedonia: 116 8. Hungary: 113 9. Armenia: 90 10. Denmark: 87 ———– 11. Netherlands: 85 12. Serbia: 84 13. Georgia: 66 14. Moldova: 65 15. Belarus: 63 16. Greece: 53 You might not care about this, but in fact… Read more »
