On this day 25 years ago, Ann Sophie was born in London, England. On the same day, less than 1,000 kilometres away, Mélanie René was born in Geneva, Switzerland. Twenty-five years later, these two girls would share one unfortunate reality: at Eurovision 2015 they both finished last.

Switzerland’s Mélanie René

For Mélanie René, who competed in the second semi final, the running order always looked ominous: she had to perform immediately after the red hot favourite and eventual winner Måns Zelmerlöw. Even so, the bookmakers still considered her to have an outside chance to qualify, with much better odds than the likes of Portugal and San Marino.

When the smoke had cleared, however, Switzerland was not among the ten qualifiers to advance. While this may not have come as a surprise, the full results revealed that she had finished with just 4 points, receiving a single point each from Norway, Azerbaijan, Iceland and Poland. That’s the least amount of points awarded to a Semi Finalist since Michael von der Heide got just 2 points for Switzerland at the 2010 Contest. Clearly, this wasn’t her time to shine!

Germany’s Ann Sophie

For Ann Sophie, qualifying for the Grand Final was much simpler, courtesy of Germany’s Big Five status. After her controversial USFÖ ‘victory’, few expected the German diva to turn silver into gold in Vienna. However, her finish at the bottom of the table with nil points raised a few eyebrows. Along with Austria’s The Makemakes, she had become the first act to receive the dreaded score since Jemini in 2003.

As Eurovision 2015 came to an end, these two women who share a birthday were left with a total of four points between them. Ouch!

What do you think of the Eurovision 2015 birthday curse? Were these divas doomed from the start?

None of them deserved the score that they got, it’s just that both songs come out as forgettable and thus they don’t even make a bad impression. I had both songs in my top 27 but outside my top 20, so again songs that are nice, but not great nor bad. Actually, the worst score in a semi final since 2008 is Czech Republic’s 2009 nil points, and Belgium’s 2009 1 point, and then comes Michael Von Der Heide and Melanie Rene.

Neither of them deserved to finish last. They were certainly not top 10 material, but last? That was a bit harsh… There were WAY worse songs that should have taken that honor: Moldova, Macedonia, San Marino, Cyprus, Lithuania, etc.

I think Germany will win in 2016.

They are both pleasant songs, decent performances. I doubt anyone hated, even disliked the performances. However, with the current voting system, you have to be memorable, and at least somebody should vote for you. That’s why atrocities like the UK scored better, because september 1 ladies totally got lost in a sea of ballads. Maybe people remember Ann Sophie’s ass in jumpsuit. That was a sight hard to forget

In no way did Ann Sophie deserve nil points. Her song was great and her performance was slick AF.
I would have like to see how the voting would have panned out had Australia not been there. The points given to Aus would have bumped up the points of a few other countries and I feel there would have been a fairer outcome.

LOL…. Damn. Now I wasn’t a huge fan of either song really, but there were worse songs out there that moreso deserved to be last.

Ann Sophie’s song was one of the best songs this year. It’s magical. I’m still listening it. I also liked Melanie’s song, it is quite unique and shows us who she is. Respect to them <3

Similar boring singers, who competed in show, where is 50% of female singers. And their songs were shitty. Deserved last places for both of them. Germany was on my 40th place and many people have the same opinion (80% I think, when I read discussions). With other songs (Laing, Fahrenheit) should be Germany so high. And Kummert was great too. It’s shame on ARD, that they choosed the worst song.

Virgos are not really relatable, so it doesn’t come as a surprise they couldn’t connect with the audience and didn’t receive many votes.

Ann Sophie should not have got nil points. However as its September 1st, it’s officially the start of the 2016 ESC season. Any song released from now can compete next year.

I’m turning 18 today haha, and I’m writing my own music and also produce my own music and have actually won some prices for that, so if I would participate as a songwriter my song would hopefully not come last haha!
