Malta in Eurovision Michela Pace 2019

Malta in Eurovision 2020 — Selection Process

Malta’s selection process for Eurovision 2020 has yet to be confirmed.

X Factor Malta

In 2019, the national broadcaster TVM used the first season of X Factor Malta to find its Eurovision act. The talent show’s winner, Michela Pace, represented the Mediterranean island in Israel. Her song “Chameleon” was internally selected.

Filming for the second season began in June. The judging panel of Ira Losco, Howard Keith Debono, Ray Mercieca and Alexandra Alden remains unchanged. Host Ben Camille also returns. However, it has yet to be confirmed whether the reality show will be used to select Malta’s Eurovision 2020 representative.

Internal Selection

Amid the uncertainty surrounding X Factor Malta, some have suggested that Malta may opt for an internal selection in 2020. Brooke Borg’s name is high on the list of potential candidates. In July, Brooke attended a songwriting camp in Bulgaria. The event was organised by Symphonix International, the songwriting team behind Eurovision hits such as “If Love Was A Crime” and “Beautiful Mess”.

Malta Eurovision Song Contest

Before X Factor, the long-running Malta Eurovision Song Contest was used to select an act for Eurovision. This format typically saw a number of local artists compete with original songs. The winning act and song usually represented Malta at Eurovision. The show underwent many format changes throughout the years. Most recently, it consisted of one 16-song final. The show was retired after Eurovision 2018.
