Daði & Gagnamagnið are here to save the world! Or so it goes according to the opening of their official music video for Iceland‘s Eurovision 2021 entry “10 Years”. The song, which celebrates the decade-long relationship between Daði Freyr and wife Árný Fjóla Ásmundsdóttir, now has a glossy video to take their love to another level.
The video opens with well-known actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson — portraying the mayor of Reykjavik — telling Mr Freyr that the Icelandic capital is under attack. “It’s already destroyed a few farms. We need you — all of Gagnamagnid — to help save the world once again with your sweet, sweet dance moves.”
Naturally the band swings into action, riding hovercrafts through the sky as they confront what appears to be a rather large ostrich. They perform the bird-like choreography from their earlier performance before shooting lasers from the icons on their chests — a very Care Bears Stare moment. It doesn’t work and the beast proceeds to sit on houses, to scare women baking pies and to handle tractors like playthings.
You’ll have to watch the video to see how this all resolves. But rest assured: It’s a quirky wonder that captures their feel-good vibes and playful spirit.
Daði og Gagnamagnið say Power Rangers inspired 10 Years music video
It makes sense that this fun-loving video took inspiration from TV shows with a sense of adventure and a habit of suspending reality.
“It’s a video I have been wanting to make for so long but never felt I had the right tools,” Dadi told the EBU’s Eurovision web site. “It’s very much inspired by old Japanese monster movies, the Power Rangers and maybe even a little bit of Paw Patrol.”
“I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. I knew what the video would be before I started writing the song, so this to me is the real release of the song, or at least how I intended for the song to be released.”
He also recounted once more how the song relates to his lovely wife and bandmate.
“Quickly after I started writing the song I knew I wanted it to be about my relationship with my wife. This is our 10th year being together and it keeps getting better. I had the music video and Rotterdam stage in mind when I made the arrangements so this is a song made for Eurovision.”
All good things must come to an end, and it seems this year’s Eurovision will mark the end of the group.
“This is the third and last Gagnamagnið song, at least I’m pretty sure about that. We have our own performance style at this point and the song is made to fit that. Thank you for all the support. It has literally changed my life.”
In a recent documentary from Icelandic broadcaster RUV, the group’s members confirmed that not all of them are singers, and that they came together partly to max out the six-person rule.
This was made evident in Stefán’s comment regarding his participation: “I am not a musician, I am not a dancer. And if I’m being perfectly honest, I have very little rhythm.” But as Jóhann says, he is a funny guy which met their bar for recruitment.
Are you loving the music video? Are you sad that this will be the group’s last song? Let us know in the comments down below.
Iceland showing Will Ferrel how it’s really done.
Just imagined:
In 2019- Hatari / Winx Club
In 2021- Dadi og Gagnamagnid / Power Rangers
Well, the good thing is that they are making some people smile. The bad thing – I can’t see them as funny (same thing as with Lithuania). Somehow they lost that 1st impression I’ve had about them. They were all weird, funny, or funny because it was way too weird 😀 But that kind of humor works only when seen for the first time. I completely dislike what both Iceland and Lithuania have to offer this year, and you can downvote this as much as you want (silly esc crazy fans haha) but both Iceland and Lithuania will do much… Read more »
tbh I totally agree with you
One of the coolest guys and artists around.., true artist
Top 3
First I was disappointed with this song because it wasn’t nearly as good as think about things. It has since grown on me. They definitely should have released the song first with the music video. It’s so fun and entertaining! It would have made people remember the song better from the start.
But the video won’t be on stage..
I know but this video still made my attitude towards the song more positive. First I was disappointed by everything about it. Now it’s turning out to be that I was just disappointed by the lackluster performance I saw when first hearing the song. And they have time to improve that too.
The giant monster is adorable!
I agree with Dadi, they should had released the song along with the video. Their visual game is so strong and last year their rise to become a frontrunner came with their music video going viral. About the song itself, it’s growing on me (“how does it keep getting better?”). The pandemic may have ruined their momentum building concerning the fandom, but casual viewers will still experience things we’re now used to.
10 years has been such a big grower for me. One of the Esc songs I’ve been playing the most tbh.
I think locals will still enjoy it.
The lady baking the pie needs to be in every video please! If possible in Rotterdam.
I hope they are taking into account that, in case of a win for Iceland, Eurovision is a marriage for LIFE! 🙂 So that swan song is maybe right in terms of ‘songs’, but not in terms of performances. :p
Someone wrote here on the comments back in january or such what different countries are going to send, and for all I remember that person said that Iceland will send something quirky etc. Then it ended about saying how brits are sending something as good as beans on a toast…
I think that person knew saw into the future
Music got:

Iceland – correct
That’s wild, only the guess about Azerbaijan went wrong, it’s a dutch made song this time. Freaky!
aww i really wish this isn’t the last song of them together i had so much fun watching them :(( but i understand that they have different styles and prefer to go with their own artistic choices
I really want to vibe with them, but I just can’t! To me they seem like they are TRYING TOO HARD to be cute and nerdy…
Or maybe they actually are cute and nerdy, but I can’t see it because deep down inside I’m a bitter and hateful person, dissatisfied my own life and projecting it onto others… Yeah, I think it might be the latter…:-/
The “trying too hard” was inevitable to comeback 2020 artists. Very hard and difficult position. Not easy at all
Love their videos, don’t like their songs. If they come up with something funny on stage i will appreciate it.
AHAHAHAHAHAHA THIS IS SO POWER RANGERS
The Eurovision version of Power Rangers that we didn’t know we needed it and loved it
I am not a fan at all but they are true artists who propose real music, spread feelings and positivity as well as a whole artistic universe.
This is what art and Eurovision are all about so congrats to them !!!!
The video is very cute and creative. It adds that dimension of colorful visuals the televised performance lacked a bit. The only thing that I find unusual is how neither the performance or the video are made in a way that would highlight the meaning of the song. I mean, his wife is right there in the background, and there’s still little effort to make her visually connected to him. Otherwise, very funny, likable and effective video. I really hope they get a good result. 🙂
That’s a great point Colin…now you’ve said it, it’s quite striking how little effort is made to centre or even give any attention at all to the subject of the song, considering his wife is right there. It’s odd that the song is a celebration of her, and their love, but the staging and the video is really more about him and his creativity. If she’s “so fascinating”, why is she always in the background?
I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s keeping that surprise for the Eurovision stage.
“say it’s likely their last song together”
Can we get that in writing? Can’t stand these people…
why not simply ignore them, then?
I don’t agree with the point you are making, but your comment did put a smile on my face!
@pretty_polly I love you!
“…say it’s likely their last song together”
I say – there is a God…
Lovely video, not a fan of the song though 🙁
This is adorable. They could have done so well last year before the ‘ronas put paid to the competition. I hope they do well.
Very cool video for JESC ….wait a minute. What the heck …
This is so original! If I remember correctly, Think About Things’s Icelandic version was also talking about them saving the world or something like that. As always, their creative energy is at its best. Can’t wait to see their performance
