Malta in Junior Eurovision 2022: Gaia Gambuzza with “Diamonds In The Skies”

Like recent years, Malta Junior Eurovision Song Contest was once again used as the country’s national final. From amongst the 16 competing acts, Gaia Gambuzza emerged victorious and earned the right to represent her country at Junior Eurovision 2022.

Gaia lives in the Maltese city of Mosta. She discovered her passion for performing and singing at the age of four, after joining a nearby performing arts school.

Now 13 years old, Gaia takes inspiration from artists including The Weeknd and Dua Lipa — which very much comes through in her synth-pop entry for Junior Eurovision.

Gaia is also a big fan of musical theatre. She’s posted a number of videos on YouTube covering some of her favourite musical songs, including “Out Here On My Own” (Fame), “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” (Mary Poppins) and “Buenos Aires” (Evita).

What do the “Diamonds In The Skies” lyrics mean?

Through “Diamonds In The Skies”, Gaia encourages us to keep aiming for the stars and to value our own worth. She does this using the analogy of flying into space and being able to see all the wonders that surround us.

During the first verse of the song, Gaia starts observing people back on Earth. She realises that many are too focused on the immediate things in their vicinity:

I took a rocket ship to go to outer space
Turned around to look at all the time we wasted looking
Down down down

Gaia recommends we should broaden our horizons and open our eyes to everything that’s around us. It’s then that we’ll truly understand just how special we all are:

It’s so easy like a b c
We just need to look around
Never close our eyes
We’re diamonds in the skies

“Diamonds In The Skies” lyrics – Gaia Gambuzza (Malta JESC 2022)

Music and lyrics: Matthew James Borg

Down down down
Diamonds in the skies

I took a rocket ship to go to outer space
Turned around to look at all the time we wasted looking
Down down down
All the time we wasted looking
Down down down

So count with me
One two three
Look at all the wonders
I see planets turn around
Watch them dancing round the sun
It’s so easy like a b c
We just need to look around
Never close our eyes
We’re diamonds in the skies

Diamonds in the skies
Never close our eyes
We’re diamonds in the skies

Follow me into this coloured universe
Trying to keep up with the magic
Oh my head is spinning
Ra ra round
Oh my head is spinning going
Ra ra round

So count with me
One two three
Look at all the wonders
I see planets turn around
It’s so easy like a b c
We just need to look around
Never close our eyes
We’re diamonds in the skies

Diamonds in the skies
Never close our eyes
We’re diamonds in the skies

Diamonds in the skies
Diamonds in the skies

So count with me
One two three
Look at all the wonders
Diamonds in the skies
It’s so easy like a b c
We just need to look around
Never close our eyes
We’re diamonds in the skies

Down down down
Diamonds in the skies

Never close our eyes
We’re diamonds in the skies

It is probably my last place. The song itself is just not very strong. The think the revamp is trying to cover that up but not entirely successfully.
Malta are just better suited for internal selections tbh. Almost every NF choice they make seems to be…odd.

I’m surprised they didn’t just buy a song from Sweden

It’s from JMESC, the scope is much smaller so there’s less a chance the broadcaster would want to have an entire song replaced just because they already bought one from abroad.

Yes, I’ve just always gotten the impression that the broadcaster isn’t keen on local songwriters or producers

“Oh crap… we’ve just realised that the lyric has been done to death and is very similar to that of a #1 tune by a well-known superdiva. Damn. What are we going to do?” “I have an idea! Just make it plural. Instead of diamonds in the sky, just say these particular diamonds are in the skieS.” “Yes! Diamonds in the Skies” “PERFECT.”

I just like the way Malta doing wtf things at JESC second year in a row. Last year they gave a song with a rap part and lyrics “you’re the perfect one”, “we can do this right”, “I see faith and I see our future in your eyes” and etc to 11 years old kids and made an over the top music video for this. This year they just had a typical “childish” song and lyrics and then they made this revamp… with some another over the top video (is it sci-fi or something?), made the melody and her image… Read more »

It bothers me that it’s multiple skies instead of diamonds in the sky
