Supergroup 5MIINUST x Puuluup took Estonia to another Eurovision grand final this year — and with the longest song title in the contest’s history, “(nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi.” But that’s not the only mouthful they’ve been spilling. Speaking on Vikerraadio’s Vikerhommik morning show, they discussed the political nature of Eurovision and shared their thoughts on Joost Klein’s disqualification.

“Nothing can be apolitical”

The members of the two groups declared upon their return that the overall experience and chance to perform on the Eurovision stage was enjoyable, and they were not personally affected by any political pressures. When discussing Eurovision’s aim to be an “apolitical” contest, Marko expressed that:

“By definition, nothing can be apolitical.

“Whenever people interact, politics are involved, no matter what they are doing. It’s just a question of where to set the boundaries and what to allow or disallow. It’s entirely normal for politics to prompt emotions in people.

“It’s part of the artist’s image and what you feel or think while watching a song. Whether Eurovision should be amended or cancelled for this reason is another question. It seems to me that overthinking things is also a bit pointless here. In the end, it’s just a fun singing competition, and I’m not sure if it should be tasked with anything in terms of world revolution.”

The scarf incident

5MIINUST x Puuluup didn’t feel much political pressure themselves at Eurovision, stating they tried not to be affected by the tensions and suggested that they were probably seen as a “group of men of a somewhat older, more respectable age.”

However, regarding the EBU’s checks for political symbols, Marko recalled a minor incident when a staff member ran after him in the hallway to ask if the scarf he had wrapped around his arm had any political significance. It turned out the scarf was simply from a sailing event in Estonia.

“I had a neck scarf tied around my arm for the Võrtsjärv week regatta, and it just fit.”

Joost Klein’s disqualification

In addition, Estoni was asked about the incident involving the Netherlands’ representative, Joost Klein, who was disqualified from the contest just a few hours before the grand final. The Estonian artist confessed that the news was confusing for the artists as well, due to the lack of information. Everyone had heard about the incident, but none of them were told what actually happened.

Estoni expressed his regret about what happened to his fellow contestant and said that he couldn’t judge or make a statement on the punishment without knowing any details.

“No one said anything about it. Everyone knew something happened, but no one knew quite what. Personally, I’m terribly sorry that Joost’s competition ended this way, but it is what it is. We still don’t know exactly what happened and whether the punishment was warranted.”

What do you think about the discussion of Eurovision’s political character by 5MIINUST x Puuluup? Do you think Eurovision can be apolitical? Let us know in the comments below.

So holocaust denialism was banned in the platform for years, he brought it back and now you want us to believe at some point he’ll ban it again? Why did he allow it back?

If it took visiting Israel to realise that allowing people to spread holocaust denialism is wrong than there is something really wrong with him (and you) – and he still hasn’t actually done anything to stop it, he profits off antisemitism on his system and will continue to do so.

So you’re fine with Musk profiting from spreading holocaust denialism after it was banned on the platform for years? Many of the groups participating in the university campus protests are Jewish, are they also anti-semitic somehow?

The Romanian government paying the debt of the public television channel that they own is not unexpected or a scandal.

The Israeli ministry of foreign affairs creating a campaign to influence voting in other countries is contrary to the supposedly “apolitical” nature of the contest.

No, that’s not the same thing at all. Trying to influence the votes of OTHER countries is not the same as assisting the country’s OWN national broadcaster financially. You know this but you’re trying to deflect from how much of an overstep this was on the Israeli government’s part, and how much it made a mockery of the “apolitical” nature of the contest.

Israeli news source Ynet have confirmed that Israel’s televote advertising campaign was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From the article: “The support Golan received from the European audience was preceded by a campaign by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government publicity office for Eurovision fans, in which the Israeli representative addressed them in French, Italian, Spanish, German, Czech, Latvian, Estonian, Albanian, Georgian and English – and asked them to vote for her.”  “The videos taken by Golan were uploaded to a dedicated YouTube channel and received more than 14 million views. The campaign appealed to audiences selected based on a careful analysis of the voting patterns of countries in the past and the interest those… Read more »

The ministry of foreign affairs creating a propaganda campaign for the entry makes the contest political, if you don’t see that you’re even dumber than your deranged comments make you seem.

Love them, and their 100 % right but…

“group of men of a somewhat older, more respectable age.”

Well…

Making the green room a big bed. Fishing for votes.
And if you check TikTok, Kohver stealing from other contestants, the whole group in an elevator, hearing their song and in the end, stealing things.

If you dig, they’re a group, that tried to bring some joy in a chaotic year of ESC.

That respectable age part was irony I assume. 5Miinust guys are all born between 1987-1989. Guys from Puuluup are indeed maybe more respectable age.

“Nothing can be apolitical” . 100% correct. Especially given the fact that Israel’s inclusion and special treatment by the EBU where 2 highly political decisions.
Also the fact that they were so terrified by simple scarfs that may or may not be keffiyeh shows how terrified they are of the public opinion swaying against Israel in this conflict.

It only reflects what’s been going on in most Western institutions, including governments. There is one group of people who must not be offended or asked difficult questions. If you believe that all lives are equal and that there’s not something “extra bad” about one of these people suffering misfortune, then you’re literally H i t l e r.
