Call her what you like, but don’t say Ivi Adamou is la la lazy. After a three year hiatus, Cyprus’ Eurovision 2012 singer is throwing herself back into the pop scene with gusto. In May she joined Minus One and Evridiki for an all-star performance of “Alter Ego” at MTN Madwalk 2016, and earlier this month she released her latest single “Akou Sopa”.
Translating roughly as “Listen, Stop Speaking”, the track sees Ivi traverse a different path than we’re used to. Set to a soundtrack of various traditional instruments, the song shows a more vulnerable side to the “La La Love” hitmaker. Yet at the same time she displays a certain degree of strength, for as she says goodbye to her lover she urges him to shut up and listen. The music video reflects the new pensive Ivi, as she spends it all in one room. Day turns to night, summer sunshine gives way to winter snow. At moments she’s deep in contemplation, other times she’s close to tears. The song is actually a cover of Los Rebujitos’ Spanish hit “Un Bonito Final”, but Ivi manages to make the track her own, bringing a fresh interpretation with different levels of light and dark.

We said Ivi’s been busy and we weren’t lying. “Akou Sopa” follows on the heels of “Tipota De Mas Stamata”, her comeback single released in January. Translating as “Nothing Stops Us”, the song tells the story of a couple staying together despite all the obstacles that are put in their way. Accompanied by some solid Mediterranean beats, the triumphant song is much more in keeping with the Adamou of old, albeit without the frivolity. The official music video depicts Ivi and her squad pounding the city paths, all with cans of Fanta in hand — as you do. Once they’ve put the soft drinks aside, they serve up some grade-A choreography, stirring up fond memories of her epic dance breakdown in Baku.
