The betting odds for Semi-Final 1 of Eurovision 2024 have finally dropped, signalling that the song contest is well and truly around the corner. Fifteen acts will sing on Tuesday, 7 May, inside Malmö Arena. But only ten can qualify for the Saturday finale.

As ever, these odds come with the normal caveats. Neither the bookies nor the public have seen the actual stage shows that the artists will deliver in Malmö. As we know from the past, acts can really elevate with a bit of creativity. Remember DoReDos from Moldova back at Eurovision 2018? A lot of folks had them down as non-qualifiers. But owing to clever staging they ended up making the Top 10 in the final.
It’s just one of endless examples of how things can change when it matters most: live on stage at Eurovision.
Scrolling through the comments on our Instagram account, our users have taken issue with the bookies’ current picks. Here are some of their hot takes, sometimes paraphrased for clarity:
- Luxembourg and Cyprus cannot both qualify (perhaps because they are both girl bops)
- Ireland should be seen as a dead certain qualifier (perhaps owing to their eye-catching NF performance and the fact there is no jury to penalise them)
- One user would be surprise if Ireland didn’t qualify because Bambie Thug “is drumming up such a cult following”

I think Ireland is going to be in a situation similar to Serbia last year, coincidently both are in my top 5, where it’s going to barely get into the final due to its artistic, out-there nature and divisive tone, but with voters from the UK and other nations I could see them scrape by.
For me Luxembourg Is a sure Qualifiers. Ireland can make It but i’m not sure. Germany last year was demoniac but It arrive last in final, but i think Bambie can do it. Australia for me Is a big idk, but if Australia qualify It Is only because Is Australia because the Song Is so bad. For me Cyprus make It and the same Is for Portugal and Serbia. Personally I’m waiting until about a week before the first semi-final to get an accurate idea of who is going to qualify. That way, people will have maybe made their mind up on which one they like the most and the artists will have performed at all of the pre – parties, giving a slight idea of what to expect live on stage on the night.

Qualifying: Ukraine, Croatia, Finland, Poland, Cyprus, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Serbia, Slovenia.
Not qualifying: Iceland, Australia, Ireland, Moldova, Portugal, Azerbaijan.
Note: If I pick a song for not qualifying, that doesn’t mean I dislike the song. And the other way around. For example I like Azerbaijan but I think it will not sadly make it to the Finals.
Ireland is clearly qualifying and comfortably so, but go off, bookies.

Can some of you who love Croatia song explain to me what is good about it?
After listening to it 5-6 times it becomes annoying. I am really trying to understand – ok, it is energetic, but apart from that ? Cliche text, very poor vocal, no staging appearance, just chaos.

Surprisingly I mostly agree agree with this. However I would drop Finland and have Australia just squeak in.
I think Portugal, Slovenia and perhaps Serbia, too won’t qualify. Instead, I see Azerbaijan and Ireland, although I’m not a fan of the Irish act this year. Rooting for Azerbaijan to qualify, though…
Ireland have had good songs in the past few years but failed to qualify. This year’s Irish entry is absolutely TERRIBLE!!! I really hope they don’t get through. For what it’s worth, I’m hoping Luxembourg qualify, not because I like the song but because it’s their first entry in thirty years, so it might make it interesting. I also want Poland through as it’s my second favourite after Croatia.
I’m nervous for Australia (love the song!) and Ireland (they deserve to qualify)… This semi is tough, so many good songs. I need to be prepared to lose some of them.

10 qualifiers out of 15. SFs are getting ridiculous. No wonder quality decreases if there is less competition. Only 8 qualifiers should be in the final in that case. A grand final with 22 songs would be better too.
Countries such as Romania, Turkey, Hungary, Slovakia, Andorra have left and of course Russia and Belarus where removed so that’s why there’s less countries that don’t Q.
And what will happen the day we only have 12 countries per SF lol ? 2 big SFs just to kick off 2 songs per sf ?

Pre-2008, the Top 10 from the previous year were automatic qualifiers alongside the Big 5.
So you’d have a semi of about 20 countries with 10 qualifiers
Romania only pulled out this year because of financial reasons. They could be back next year.
Qualifying also depends on the countries in the same Semi that will vote.

I have just realised that this is the first time Luxembourg has had to perform in a semi – final since they were introduced in 2004, 10 years after Luxembourg left. It would be nice to see them get into the final in their first year back and I think it’s a pretty good contender.
Having UK-GER-SWE in the mix isn’t going to help the songs in places 1-2-3-4 because the memory of those will even more distant when it comes to voting. I think two or three of the first four won’t make it.

I just listened to the official semi final 1 playlist on the Eurovision youtube in the running order and this is how I ranked the songs (minus the UK, Germany and Sweden).

Now this is just my personal ranking, don’t read into it as a prediction.
Honestly I just can’t see Slovenia and/or Portugal appealing to audience in that amount that they vote for them, comparing to all other options they will have. Older folks will for sure go for Iceland, and I’m more than sure that Iceland will manage to qualify to shock to many. I also think Australia will manage to qualify. Iceland and Australia over Slovenia and Portugal. (Not what I want, just objectively thinking.)

When a singer goes to that much trouble to be ‘edgy’ or ‘shocking’ you just know the vocals are getting A LOT of help from the recording engineers and producers. Why else work so hard to distract us from the actual song?
This year’s Ireland gives me last year’s Belgium vibe LOL
Iceland and Moldova will qualify. Both artists already have qualifying experience from much harder semi-finals. They will easily qualify in such a weak year.
Hopefully Azerbaijan and Poland joins them instead of crap from Croatia, Finland, Cyprus, Luxembourg, and Lithuania.

I’m not a fan of Croatia’s song this year (I think it’s just ok) and didn’t like your comment because you are rude and should not be calling other people’s work as “cr4p” just because you don’t like it. Every artist put a lot of effort in their song this year, and I’m sure they are putting effort in their performances as well. You should learn manners.

I never understood how people can make their mind up about what is and isn’t qualifying when they haven’t even seen the staging, or the live performances with the staging. That usually makes it pretty obvious who will and won’t go through.
I’ll reserve my judgements until I see the live semi final performances.
That said, I would love for there to be a handful of shocking results going in to the finals, with Ireland, Australia and Iceland all qualifying! That really would set the cat amongst the pigeons!

I wouldn’t rule Azerbaijan out too early. If you look at the running order of SF1, the big favorites are all in the first half so the countries that are a bit “under” will probably suffer from this. I think of Poland. Azerbaijan is in the 2nd half between Moldova and Australia, 2 songs that will do very poorly imo. I wouldn’t be surprised if Azerbaijan finds a way to sneak in the final instead of Poland (or even Ireland but I hope not).

I don’t see Luxembourg and Cyprus making it either. Instead I’d go for Ireland and Australia. None of us are really great fans of the studio version of the Australian song but they are gonna kill it live on stage.
Luxembourg has dream position and i believe girl singing for Cyprus is from Australia (and Australia votes here). Wouldn’t rule them out.
I was cleaning home today and had a full playlist of Eurovision 2024 playing in the background. Apparently, there were a few songs that I could not stand to listen to, so I ran to skip them. These skipped songs were from Croatia, Finland, Azerbaijan, Ireland, and Iceland as of SF1. Slovenia surprised me the most. I very much felt Veronika’s vibe while cleaning the windows. At the moment, my personal qualifiers for the Final are Ukraine, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Cyprus, Poland, Serbia, Portugal, Slovenia, Australia, and Moldova.

Are you sure? The riding on a horse dance move might make my windows all dirty. Jokes aside, I was just sharing that I’m not vibing with the song. It surprised me since, at first, I thought I cannot stand the song because of its resemblance to the mix of Maneskin and Kaarija (visual/thematic part), but I guess I’m not into this song generally speaking.
I never skip until after the contest. Experience tells me that some songs just ‘click’ after multiple listens. And if they don’t, that makes the songs around them seem even better.

I still dont get this voting rule… Why not everybody can vote for both Semifinals?
In the first semi also the UK, Sweden and Germany can vote, so more northern.
In the second semi it’s France, Italy and Spain.
With the countries in Semi 1, I think Ireland has a good chance to qualify.

I don’t understand why people are so quick to write off Moldova. It’s not a great song and I agree it shouldn’t go to the final, but Moldova has a knack of staging its songs well and getting the televotes in. Plus, with no Romanian entry this year, the Romanian diaspora will give their votes to Moldova.
And don’t forget, Natalia qualified from the 28-country “semi from hell” in 2007, also with a song that doesn’t deserve to qualify.
Fight was fire. It was so worth qualifying. And it would still qualify today.
The Romanian Diapsora will have to compete with the rest of the world which will regard other entries much more highly. The most Moldova can get is 4 points from them.
I agree, her staging is prettt good actually she has five other people on stage with her who all look similar to her and are singing and playing violin and you don’t know which is the real Natalia until she walks out from among them at the end
Luxembourg’s average song certainly doesn’t deserve to qualify, but the closing slot in SF1 and a wave of nostalgia should see them safe.
If Ireland doesn’t qualify, then they’ll revert back to the safest (by which I mean dull) songs possible. Prepare for years of Louis Walsh boybands singing dated ballads.

Both semi finals have each very unprdictable acts performing. In SF1, the Top 10 in the Odds is still wide open. I think Ireland will qualify as I expect their stage act will be One of a Kind!! From the dancy Girl-bops Cyprus and Luxembourg I only see one of them qualifing, not both. Both acts arent very strong imo. I think Poland might sneak in or not with 10 or 11th in the Televote?. Reasons for NON- QUALIFIERS: Serbia – Very early in running order, death slot position in Semi-Final 1, very forgettable Billie Eilish wannabe, don’t expect much from staging. With Lithuania following them, will be massively overshadowed. There is nothing about the staging that is impressive at all. The song, which I did find rather impactful for a day or 2 post National Final and after that it died and Portugal took Serbias spot not only as a cert qualifier but JURY Top 5 material in the Grand Final. Poland – will get at least 4 x 12 or 4 x 10 from Ireland, Norway, UK and Ukraine televote. The remaining points will go to Lithuania. Poland a certain qualifier whether you like the song or not. The 12 from Croatia and few other bits and pieces will see Serbia through just like last year.

Diaspora votes only work when a song has impact or relevance and I’m sorry but, LUNA’s song has nothing aside from a cute music video and that’s it and representing a nation that has a spotty qualification record and a hit-or-miss staging record, my hopes aren’t high for Poland. Yes, no jury to vote “against” it, but there are so many song looking to collect votes from the public, Croatia and Ukraine – and they are even just after Ireland in the running order. Very nice analysis. Sure, the ranking of yours might not be 100% accurate, but it is more or less what will probably happen. The only exception is Moldova, because I think they are always strong with the televote, always make a good staging, Natalia will not flop vocally, and both choreography and audio quality will be totaly different from what we have seen at their national final, so it might qualify as a result. Btw, I don’t like Moldovan song, I’m not a fan, just giving my 5 cents as an addition to this great analysis.
