We’re just getting over the news that Cyprus are back in Junior Eurovision, and now one of their former JESC stars is back too!

Sophia Patsalides has released her first solo track in nearly a year — a cover of Ariana Grande’s “Into You”.

Following the likes of other JESC alumni Gaia and Destiny, she’s now re-branded simply as Sophia.

The cover and video were recorded at the Soundscape Studious in Cyprus, where Sophia has been busy working on new songs. It’s a much more stripped back version of the original track, relying solely on a piano and Sophia’s vocals.

Sophia — “Into You”

Now this is what you call slaying a song.

Sophia’s vocals are incredible in this cover and the final chorus in particular is breathtaking. It’s easy to forget that Sophia is still just 15 years old. We loved her at Junior Eurovision in 2014 and after all, “I pio omorfi mera” still holds the highest ever Wiwi Jury score for a full ESC/JESC contest. But it’s clear that Sophia has just kept on improving since then.

Sophia’s also been releasing covers alongside her equally talented sister, Sarah, over on their Facebook page “SP Squared”. With this latest re-brand and the promise of more to come, there will be talk of Eurovision in the future. Y’all voted Sophia your favourite from the class of 2014 to go to the main show. And guess what? She’ll be 16 — the minimum age requirement for Eurovision — this December.

When a Max Martin song is stripped down to basics away from his overproduced comfort zone but way too close to the approach that seems to scare eurovision fans … the slow tempo, the piano-driven-balladry-style, etc … it’s almost like this would be a virus contaminating anyone’s hyperactive-uptempo-urgent-need in Eurovision but whose sound and emotional vocal performance would serve as the antidote to a disease that has prevented music credibility to look at Eurovision far more seriously away from the shallow and the over-the-top … Should this girl represent Cyprus in ESC? Absolutely? But will anyone give her a great… Read more »
