Seven acts are competing to represent Germany at Eurovision 2019. They will compete in Unser Lied für Israel. The winner will represent the Big 5 nation in Tel Aviv. The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — has listened to all seven songs and has quickly developed strong opinions. Did we find an act to  replicate Michael Schulte’s success? Read on to find out.

1. Aly Ryan – “Wear Your Love”

In a way, any one of the User Lied songs would be good enough for Tel Aviv. But there’s one thing that would really stand out. Aly Ryan’s “Wear Your Love” is modern and stylish, fun and sensual. The dreamy verses erupt into a massive chorus that suggests big potential for staging. If Aly can deliver live, “Wear Your Love” will slay!

2. Linus Bruhn – “Our City”
3. BB Thomaz – “Demons”
4. S!sters – “Sister”
5. Lilly Among Clouds – “Surprise”

Julian

1. Aly Ryan – “Wear Your Love”

First, I have to underline what an incredibly good job Germany has done this year. These songs and staging — it’s the best German selection since 2010. That leads to my personal winner who definitely has to be Aly Ryan with “Wear Your Love”. I fell in love, especially with the catchy hook, “Dress me, Dress me up, all I wanna do is wear your love”. The song is the perfect mixture of dance pop and Daft Punk with a perfect vibe for Eurovision. And the staging screams Melfest realness. The point is — bring this to Eurovision and you may have a winner here.

2. Makeda – “The Day I Loved You Most”
3. Lilly Among Clouds – “Surprise”
4. Linus Bruhn – “Our City”
5. Gregor Hägele – “Let Me Go”

Barnabas

1. BB Thomaz – “Demons”

Here’s the song for Germany, ladies and gentlemen — a soul track with an edge. The guitars give the number the roughness needed to avoid being too “poppy”, and BB has a strong voice that fits the song. Deutschland, you better send this to Tel Aviv!

2. Aly Ryan – “Wear Your Love”
3. Makeda – “The Day I Loved You Most”
4. Gregor Hägele – “Let Me Go”
5. Lilly Among Clouds – “Surprise”

Pablo

1. Aly Ryan – “Wear Your Love”

Oh Mein Gott, yes! Germany may have been scared to send big pop numbers after past efforts they would not like to talk about, but Aly Ryan is going to set the world on fire, and I will dance to the beat of that. This is both the perfect song to send after last year’s effort and for how this year is shaping. This is an entry to be proud of. Proud to send. Proud to sing. And proud of the great position I bet it will end up at.

2. BB Thomaz – “Demons”
3. Lilly Among Clouds – “Surprise”
4. Linus Bruhn – “Our City”
5. Makeda – “The Day I Loved You Most”

Luis

1. Aly Ryan – “Wear Your Love”

In a field of extremely pleasant mid-tempos, this horn-filled banger takes the crown. “Wear Your Love” is sultry yet straightforward, powerful and ready to top the airplay charts around Europe. It’s been ages since Germany sent an up-tempo entry, and this one is a perfect chance to command the European dancefloor. Hoping that Aly can deliver — this is the most distinctive song in Unser Lied für Isräel and the Germans should not hesitate. Das ist ein Banger, Deutschland!

2. Lilly Among Clouds – “Surprise”
3. BB Thomaz – “Demons”
4. Linus Bruhn – “Our City”
5. Gregor Hägele – “Let Me Go”

Florian

1. Aly Ryan – “Wear Your Love”

“Wear Your Love” is a very interesting track. Starting off with a catchy intro, the verses build up to something. And in the chorus, I really like the transition from the verses into the refrain. Besides, Aly’s voice makes this a unique song that would stand out among others in Tel Aviv. And she definitely knows how to perform!

2. Lilly Among Clouds – “Surprise”
3. BB Thomaz – “Demons”
4. Gregor Hägele – “Let Me Go”
5. Makeda – “The Day I Loved You Most”

Antranig

1. Aly Ryan – “Wear Your Love”

I’m going to do things a bit differently here. In its current state, Lilly Among Clouds is definitely my favourite in Germany but I’m ranking Aly first because she has the most potential. “Wear Your Love” has the ability to be “Fuego” levels of epic on stage. The chorus is arguably rather lacklustre and just needs to be spruced up before it reaches those tantalising woodwind beats. I’m being really particular because this has the potential to finish in the Top 5 at Eurovision but needs to be tightened up to get there.

2. Lilly Among Clouds – “Surprise”
3. Linus Bruhn – “Our City”
4. S!sters – “Sister”
5. Gregor Hägele – “Let Me Go”

1. Aly Ryan – “Wear Your Love”

I think it’s time for Germany to send a bop to Eurovision and let us party so hard this season. “Wear Your Love” is definitely going to slay on every Eurovision party and also on the Wiwi Jam! Can’t wait to see how this will do live. One of the most important things about this song is that it’s not boring, it keeps exciting me until the end of the 3 minutes. Also, this song and my second favourite were the two songs who grabbed me in a few seconds, which is so important for people who are going to listen for the first time only on the final in Tel Aviv. It was really difficult to choose if this song should be on the top of my ranking or my second favourite song.

2. BB Thomaz – “Demonz”
3. S!sters – “Sister”
4. Lilly Among Clouds – “Surprise”
5. Makeda – “The Day I Loved You Most”

Who are you favourites in Unser Lied für Israel? Can Germany remain in the Top 5? Let us know in the comments below.

Disappointed. And also a good example and a cautionary tale of why anything voted in polls on this site and by this crowd or jury (I mean wiwibloggs) should be taken with a grain of salt.

Lilly among the clouds and aly where my favourites beforehand but lily felt like a budget Kate Bush and Aly felt a wee bit too gimmicky with all the special effects, think the best performance won in end.

I’ll need to wait for this result to sink before opinating on it. It’s solid and has potential, but it was only my 5th choice, so I’m naturally disappointed. Basically it’s Destination Eurovision all over again.

By the way, I checked the odds during the show and Sisters was by far last place, which means that some people made REAL money tonight. I hope they use it with ther siblings. 😛

We’ve chosen Sisters… only the Panel was smart enough to put Aly first… I’m crying I will see my country in the bottom 5 again 🙁 Anyway, good luck to them!

I liked it! Even though it was my number three, behind Lilly Among Clouds and Aly Ryan, I think it’s still a very solid choice. Exciting voting sequence as well, good job on the whole national final, Germany!

If there was anything that surprised me, though – Aly Ryan getting just six points from the televoting and Linus Bruhn getting so high with the juries.

Good job everyone!

I haven’t been this disappointed since Heart Shaped Hole went down in flames!

I don’t want to say anything bad about Sister because it is good, and they are great, but…

Say her name three times and she shows up in the Wiwi comments section.
Can we officially declare her the new, improved Ralph Siegel? Especially now that she’s got a song for Germany? (And if she’s Siegel Mark 2, could she PLEASE write something for San Marino?)

I feel that the treadmill restricted Aly a little bit. I guess they could get rid of it with similar results and giving her more time to breath.

The “costume change” was also an unnecessary thing. They have a fun song, a good performer and good looking visual effects, they didn’t need gimmicks, just good choreography and the right camera work.

Had no idea of anything before the show, so everything was new to me and depended on the impact. Overall, it’s again a quite solid final. Personally, I’d probably go for Makeda or Gregor, but that might change if I hear songs more than once. I just hope whoever Germany chooses will deliver it in May.

Could potentially be the best batch of host/Big 5 entries since at least 2011. Just gotta hope Kobi has a good song.

I really didn’t expect that but I love the sisters right now. They gave me life. But Aly, Linus and Lilly were great, too. And the other three were good too, I just don’t expect them to do well in Israel.
But the bottom line is: great great national fimal.

It was a good show, but I feel it could be even better if they had more time to rehearsal. That’s sometimes the problem with final-only national selections. There’s a lot of potential to explore in these entries. No idea who will win, but I would vote for Lilly.

The same here, Sabrina, although I felt that the show was well-rehearsed for the most part. I only spotted a couple of lighting/cueing mistakes, towards the end. The quality of the staging is undeniably high; I loved the crazy choreography for some of the songs. Fantastic creativity. None of the performances were weak, so just pick a number from 1 to 7, Germany! 🙂
Ohh ok then. Lilly for the win. Or Makeda. Or (you get the point.)

Yeah, nothing serious, just a matter of getting everybody from the production team on the same page. Examples: the lights on Aly’s face sometimes didn’t allow us to see her eyes and the camera angles while the boomerang-demons (!) on BB’s performance were coming and going. Also I felt that some singers were nervous, especially Gregor. If someone lets them do it all again tomorrow, I bet we would get even more confused about who to pick.

I’d second that. Probably after a few listenings I’d order them more clearly, but from the first impression, I think all 7 did a good job. But is it 6.5/10 (decent) or 10/10 (masterpiece)? For that, I’d need to hear them again, including the studio version which doesn’t contain the public clapping.

IMO, the live versions were actually mostly an improvement on the studio recordings. Perhaps the only unlucky artist tonight was Lilly in the clouds, because her voice wasn’t fully healthy. But I still think she could win anyhow.

Oh, okay. I noticed Lily’s voice cracking a bit at heights, but it was still very well done. If both studio and live version exist, it would be good to hear both, but if the live one is better, good. In any case, I rarely ever rate songs I haven’t heard at least 3 times (Minimum for NF songs is 2, but most get about 4-5, excluding watching clips at lists), so whoever wins will need a re-listen to get to my list. Even so, it’s blatantly obvious they are all better than songs from Montenegro, Croatia and Latvia, at… Read more »
