They’re the UK pop group who previously covered the Melodifestivalen hit “Something in Your Eyes” from Jenny Silver. And it would seem Steps have a soft spot for Melfest (or at least an open wallet for the royalties it helps them generate). That’s because the five-piece have included two covers from the Swedish competition on their latest album What the Future Holds Part 2.
Yep, despite some spicy comments in 2020 from band member Ian “H” Watkins, who said Eurovision was “just not the right place for us,” the group is more than happy to dip their toes in the back catalogue of Sweden’s national selection.
The first cover is Mariette’s “A Million Years”, which placed fourth at Melfest in 2017. Mariette co-wrote it with a songwriting team that included two Eurovision greats: Thomas G:son and Peter Boström. The song also won the OGAE Second Chance Contest, marking it as Eurofans’ favourite track that didn’t make it to Eurovision.
The lyrics of the song capture the singer’s devotion to their beloved — regardless of whether the feelings are reciprocal.
“Whether you’re out or whether you’re in, baby I’ll never let you go. Whether you lose or whether you win, baby can’t you see, can’t you see me through the tears?”
Their other cover is of “Victorious” — Lina Hedlund’s Melfest 2019 entry. The song placed 11th in the final, ahead of only Malou Prytz’s “I Do Me”.
What do you think of Steps’ new album? And what do you make of their growing romance with Melodifestivalen? Are there any other Melfest songs you’d like them to cover? Let us know down below!
I’m a bit bored of seeing so many Steps articles here. To be fair, this is about them performing a Melodifestival song, which may be of interest to some readers, and it’s slow season. Just so long as it’s not the same old story of ‘should steps do Eurovision’. I feel that topic has been exhausted. As if writing about it so often will make it happen.
As much I love STEPS because their songs are part of my childhood but this band are not open and don’t want to be bothered to be ask on entering ESC, so this hype is useless.
I just can’t understand why Wiwibloggs has so many articles about an act that have never been to Eurovision and actually stated they have no intention to compete.
I love Steps, and their two last albums are full of hits and bangers, but let’s be real, they would be another bottom for the UK in Eurovision. Not because their music isn’t good, but their profile doesn’t fit Eurovision anymore. UK should take a risk and try different genres.
Let’s be real—neither of these songs sung by STEPS would win Eurovision or even challenge for top 10. Victorious couldn’t even crack top 10 at Melfest. I was shocked it made final with its predictable lyrics.
I love AMillion Years! Steps music and Melodifestivalen are basically the same genre so it makes sense why they would cover these songs. Steps love Eurovision but they would never consider it (i think one member said that wants to do it) because their return was extremely successful (music and sold-out tour) so just ike every UK successful act, they would not take the risk, even though performing at Eurovision would help them reach new audiences. On the contrary, has-beens like Bonnie, engelbert and Blue did Eurovision because they had no mainstream success or sold-out arena tours. I think a… Read more »
I read “Glorious” (by Cascada) and “Ten Years” for a moment… My brain really needs to take a break from eurovision if I don’t wanna go insane
Steps will never do Eurovision. Their perception of the contest is too political and they will just focus on their music career in the UK. To them Eurovision is break it or make it time, and i think they want to avoid it immensely. Thanks to the media , don’t expect any famous acts next year from the UK. As for Steps cover version of million years. its a good version , similar , but Mariette gets my vote for her original version.
all of you hyping an act to represent the UK with melfest leftovers? are you for real people?
all of you = William
They were relevant 21 years ago, in early 2000s. Now they are simply dated. I hope UK will send a promicing young artist, with a modern, catchy song. Or else, they’re doomed for 0 points again
Oh pipe down
yeah let them send drag queens, the only act they wouldn’t reject Eurovision at this stage!
Steps do what they always do and murder decent songs.
Their versions of Victorious and A Million Years do nothing to recreate the originals…they have no soul and this is the reason Steps need not do Eurovision. They should have remained a one-hit wonder with 5-6-7-8.
It’s exactly the same lot of anger trolls on here
These versions are several “Steps” down from their original versions – those have missed up their magic.
These covers just sound so boring, almost like a watered down versions of the originals.
The Steps album was number 1 yesterday in the Uk and Australian ITunes Charts. Surely having these songs being heard by a new audience is a good thing? Let’s face it, how many people who have this album knew these songs originated from Mello?
no one knows (the general public) these songs are from Melo and no one cares tbh.
What’s the thing with Steps all the time?
I just wish they were better covers. Something in your eyes was a carbon copy of the original. With these two they managed to make them more generic sounding.
cringe
not this again
Who cares. Steps aren’t going to Eurovision, they are not Eurovision fans. If it wasn’t for Wiwibloggs the only time I would think of Steps is when 5678 gets played on a classics radio station.
they are Eurovision fans in the UK sense (campy fun).
Those 2 songs were written by Dotter as well, so it makes sense she cleared some royalties to work with them.
