Frans will sing “If I Were Sorry” in the final of Melodifestivalen 2016. The song is written by Oscar Fogelström, Michael Saxell, Fredrik Andersson together with Frans Jeppsson Wall himself.
In the song Frans details all the things he would do if he were sorry. But it’s not really clear if he actually is, as this lady seems to have done him wrong: “Now did you ever realize, that your mistake had a prize, oh you threw it all away, cuz you’re the devil in disguise”.
Frans topped the Swedish charts with “Who’s da Man” — a song dedicated to Swedish footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic — at the age of eight. He also got another chart hit with “Fotbollsfest” in 2008.
“If I Were Sorry” lyrics – Frans
I’d crawl through the desert on my hands and knees
Rehearsin’ my pretty please
Climb the highest mountain
If I were sorry
Shout it from the top
Swim under water until my lungs exploded
Walk into the fire
If I were sorry
I’d run a thousand miles
Wouldn’t stop until I dropped
Wouldn’t take a break to breathe until I got close
Enough
Then I’d do it all again
If I really had the chance
But I know deep inside for you it’s just another
dance
If I were sorry
I’d give you all the glory
if I were sorry
If I were sorry
it would be a different story
If I were sorry
if I were sorry oh
I’d hold my breath till my face turned blue
I’d rob a bank and the post office too
Swim across the ocean
If I were sorry
I’d take a vow of silence
I wouldn’t say a single word
Until you really heard
If I were sorry
I’d run a thousand miles
Wouldn’t stop until I dropped
Wouldn’t take the break to breathe
Until I got close enough
If I were sorry
I’d give you all the glory
if I were sorry
If I were sorry
it would be a different story
if I were sorry oh
Now did you ever realise
that your mistake had a prize
oh you threw it all away
’cause you’re the devil in disguise
Now would you ever realise
the consequences of your lies
and would you save the falling tear or act as if
there’s nothing there
If I were sorry
if I were sorry
If I were sorry
if I were sorry
If I were sorry
I’d take a vow of silence
I wouldn’t say a single word
if I were sorry
If I were sorry
I’d be on my hands and knees
beggin pretty please
if I were sorry
but I’m not sorry, no

if were sorry
And in Northern English, where Scandinavian influences have survived, “If I were” would be perfectly normal everyday speech.
While technically the subjunctive “If I were sorry” is correct, nobody who speaks colloquail English (normal every day English) would use the subjunctive form while speaking English. You use the subjunctive in formal written English or in very formal circumstances. But most of us don’t have frequent conversations with the Queen. And this isn’t the 19th century or Shakespeare, people don’t converse in subjunctive form in the year 2016. This will be embarrassing for Sweden and of course arrogant Swedes will argue with native English speakers and insist they are right and know English better than those for whom English… Read more »
Whilst we all know that Sweden’s grip on English grammar can be questionable (looking at you 2014…) this song is correct English.
The more important question should be why is this favourite to win? It reminds me of being in high school when all the talk singers (Lilly Allen, Kate Nash etc.) were popular. It’s not fresh or original or even interesting. But that’s just my opinion…
You guys obviously don’t know English very well… It’s all about the Subjunction mood, I will show you an explanation down below. “Subjunctive Mood The subjunctive mood is a verb form that is used for unreal or hypothetical statements. It is made up of the phrases I were, he were, she were, it were, etc. You often use this form when you are being wishful. For example, I wish I weren’t so shy. I wish it were warmer outside. If I were taller, I could dunk a basketball. He acts as if he were the one in charge. All of… Read more »

Actually, you CAN say “I were”. In swedish, it means “vore” while “was” means the normal “var”.
