Songs by Eurovision artists in 2019: Our top tracks (20 to 11)

Incredibly, 2019 is almost up. And that means one thing — the return of our annual Top Tracks countdown!

As usual, the team from wiwibloggs voted for their favourite 2019 releases and recordings by and featuring Eurovision stars. Songs which competed at Eurovision or national finals were excluded (they’ve been analysed to death in our jury reviews), as were artists who have yet to compete on the Eurovision stage.

After considering well over 100 songs, we finally settled on our top 50. And now we’re ready to share it with y’all. We’ll publish ten tracks daily between now and New Year’s Day.

20. Lena “Love”

What we said: With a lovely piano instrumentation, the song focuses on her vocal delivery. It sounds as strong as Lena could ever get. Put all the big production aside, Lena can totally strip it down. (Jonathan)

19. Loïc Nottet “29”

What we said: Much of Loïc’s previous work told us tales of struggling to fit in and learning to be confident in himself. “29” is a conspicuous change of pace, talking about heartbreak and longing for lost love. Despite the change of subject matter, the mood is on-brand for Loïc — there is hopelessness, loneliness and struggle conveyed both musically and lyrically. Stripped of the fireworks of a grand composition, the strength of “29” is the way it allows Loïc’s vocals to shine. “29” showcases his vocal range, spanning a lower register through the choruses and some sky high notes in the final chorus which he hits with aplomb. (Antranig)

18. Benjamin Ingrosso “All Night Long (All Night)

What we said: The track opened the Melodifestivalen final in style, and has since gone on to become Benjamin’s biggest chart hit after “Dance You Off”. That’s because Ingrosso didn’t simply cover Lionel Richie’s original. He took the cheesy 1980s smash, gave it a twist and turned it into one of the coolest bops of 2019. The whole package exudes effortlessness — perfect for long summer nights, whether in the club, on the beach or simply lounging in the garden. (Padraig)

17. Marco Mengoni “Muhammad Ali”

What we said: A track with a strong pulsing beat, the song talks about how “we are all Muhammad Ali” and that we all have the strength to stand tall even if you wake up in the morning to find “your greatest enemy smiles at you in the mirror”. The music video was shot in the Italian city of Ronciglione. It sees the Eurovision alum taking to the streets with the local marching band, which brings together people of all ages and genders. (Jonathan)

16. Charlie Charles and Dardust feat. Mahmood, Sfera Ebbasta, Fabri Fibra “Calipso”

What we said: An electronic pop song that sounds just as contemporary and fresh as Mahmood’s own debut album. Indeed, Italian fans already seem to love the new song. It debuted at number one on the Italian Spotify charts upon its release. Lyrically, the song has an inspirational message to find your inner personality and not to wait for miracles. Instead, the main force lies within your own soul. (Florian)

15. Tamta “Sex With Your Ex”

What we said: Tamta lustfully reminds us that sex with your ex is always the best. Well, if she says so! Her intoxicating voice casts an incurable love spell, arousing men, women and non-binaries alike. “Sex With Your Ex” starts with an eerie instrumental solo and then builds to a seductive jazzy chorus. Make this your bedroom jam and spice things up to a whole new level. (Indranil)

14. Ester Peony “7 Roses”

What we said: A track packed with sass and confidence. Released on Cat Music, and already gaining traction on Romanian radio, the digital production here is club-ready. This attitude on the track is exported to the music video. Looking fierce with her hair slicked back in a ponytail, Ester Peony is the girl in control! As she weaves through multiple scenes bossing the other characters, Ester rides a motorbike that’s straddled on the shoulders of men. (Deban)

13. Hatari “Klefi / Samed” feat. Bashar Murad

What we said: It’s a collaboration with the artist Bashar Murad, who hails from East Jerusalem. The city’s status remains disputed. Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem is considered illegal under international law. Israel maintains that Jerusalem is its undivided capital. Palestinians hope to establish their capital in East Jerusalem. Hatari filmed their video for the song in Palestine’s Jericho desert and released it during their homecoming concert in Iceland. The title of the song holds a double meaning. Chamber refers to an echo chamber, while steadfast relates to the perseverance of the Palestinian people.

12. Tamara Todevska “Monsters”

What we said: The Macedonian singer worked with the same team behind her Eurovision hit. The title hints at something scary and powerful. Indeed, those demons are about love and what happens when it goes away.“Monsters” escapes the clichés and platitudes of so many songs about love. Rather than taking us on a journey through euphoria, Tamara takes us somewhere darker and therefore more real. Her babe has left her and it’s cutting deep. He’s left her with the titular demons she sings about. (William)

11. Loreen “Walk With Me”

What we said: “Walk With Me” is all about diversity and inclusion. It’s a call for everyone to embrace our differences and how to learn from each other to ultimately become stronger. Adding her own texture to this track, Loreen embraces the message that everyone should be part of our society. Sonically, Loreen’s interpretation of the song is impressive, and she truly turns the track into her own. Her vocals in particular match perfectly with the instrumentation. (Florian)
